The real irony at work here was that the Training Center included some of the nicest accommodations Sera had ever enjoyed. You could say plenty of things about the Capitol, but if they were going to kill you, they certainly knew how to do it stylishly. Sera sits uneasily on a very long, extremely long couch in a living space that is actually bigger than her family's household. Sera had not thought much about her family since all this had started, and quickly pushed them from her mind. All of us, er- most of us, have families, sentimentality will only convince people you're not winner material.
The clothing was nice, too. It was almost as if her wardrobe had been made especially for a Tribute to enjoy before the games. In fact, it probably had been. Sera wore some beige cargo pants and a t-shirt that was a dark shade of blue. She had asked Shea to give her a short-cropped haircut after the opening ceremonies had played out.
Klaus had informed her that he wanted to speak with her. At fourteen, she was one of the youngest Tributes in these games, and she figured that, to most people, that would make Safina the safer bet. She wondered that perhaps a Victor would see things in a different sort of light, but she was as ignorant as everybody else. She knew Klaus had started a home for 'disadvantaged youth,' and Atticus had even gone in with him to sponsor it. District 3 had produced two Victors in close to forty years, and their philanthropy was a bright spot in what was otherwise a very bleak, smoggy place.
Sera wonders what kind of man Klaus is, and how she could perhaps make herself stand apart from the dozens of Tributes he had already trained only to watch die.
