After a day of crippling mutt fights, an evening filled with death hit Ekram just as prescribed.
Serelis Yossarian, District Three
Carmen Cantelou, District Six
It brought the puppetmaster great joy that two more tributes were killed. He wondered for quite some time if the tricks backstage were too harsh– if their handpicked selections would make for an excruciatingly painful period of waiting before they might see the next death. Thirteen in one day was a lot, more than any day of the Hunger Games in recent memory. So much power… was this how the Gamemakers of the early days felt, killing twenty-three of them in a matter of hours? How did his Great-Grandfather, Jovis, do it?
Ekram monitored the vitals of the remaining nine tributes: a wall once filled with names, faces, and numbers was now hollowed out.JUPITER | DEAD | ARTEMIS | DEAD | DEAD | SAFINA
TIDE | CIRCE | DEAD | DEAD | SERAPHINA | DEAD
DEAD | DEAD | LUCIA | VERA | DEAD | DEAD
DEAD | DEAD | NORI | DEAD | DEAD | DEAD
The faint play of his Headliners' music kept Ekram awake in his chair… it was good, but he knew they could do better. The stakes were higher, and the music had to grow in intensity. "No, no, no. We've outgrown this setlist. It's old news. We have to program the new album into their code." Ekram rose and moved to the miniature version of the Headliners band in the center of the Headquarter's map. He toyed with their strings, moving their hands away from the microphones, guitars, and drums.
Powered down, the music that the tributes once heard in the distance as they traveled through the desert has become nothing more than an agitating hum of a microphone's feedback. The lights of the Maybach Bowl festival cease. Metal bars and ropes cease any entry into the festival space.
"Come on, gents. We should listen to the music files and pick a tracklist for their next performance. I'd hate to keep our lovely tributes waiting."
Congratulations on surviving Day 3!
Surviving Day Three, mind you. You haven't survived everything yet.
Southeasterly winds pick up in the arena. The sands of the dunes pick up, just as you once suspected they might. Golden sands traverse the entirety of the arena: even into the Glass Labyrinth, where most of the tributes resided for the evening. The sands force the tributes to leave the labyrinth with line of sight of their allies or enemies. Between the whipping sands, the dark night, and the intoxicated glow of neon-infused flora and fauna, it is impossible for the tributes to stay near their allies.
You're on your own. For now.
