Spending time in the library is incredibly important. It gives him a chance to escape, a chance to enter a world where everything makes sense, and his life isn't on the line. Yet it seems impossible, like nothing matters at the moment except figuring out how to find somewhere nice and quiet to hide. Of course it's easier than it seems.

Kristof searches through the many types of books trying to find one that's interesting, but after a bit, he sits down at a table and closes his eyes. It's a nice relaxing place, and maybe that's the thing. Maybe it's a chance to relax and rest. To take a breath when all other hope is gone.

But why?

Why did this happen?

He takes a breath and relaxes even more. It's simple enough, and maybe that's why he's here. To do what he can, to change himself, to do everything else when all hope is gone. Not that it matters.

Nothing matters.

A heavy sigh leaves his chest as he forces himself to sit up and look around. This is the one place where being alert won't hurt him, but it can make a difference. Learning is important, and right now, Kristof is done. Everything is over, and all hope is crumbling, but it's falling before he can change his mind.

I'm going to die, so why even try?

Even as he began to feel more comfortable wielding different weapons, practicing self defense, studying plants–August found himself returning to the library over and over. He had never been much of a reader, but there was something about these storybooks that pulled him in, allowing him to escape to a world not so different from the wilds of Seven. Deep, mysterious forests. Only these ones were filled with all sorts of creatures and people, curious and dangerous.

If only he could leap into one, and escape all of this for real. He knew that wasn’t the right way to think. But with the games looming ahead, and all of the pressure of his sisters (and now, Mackenzie) on his shoulders, he couldn’t help it.

For now, he was studying plants again, because he realized early on that this was a weak point for him. Ironically, though he’d lived next to a forest his whole life, he struggled to categorize plants by their flowers, berries, bark, or leaf shapes. He was beginning to feel privileged for always receiving his wood pre-cut and ready to work with. Though, if you gave him a tree that was already cut into planks, he could probably tell you what it was.

After reading a while, he stopped to stretch his legs and peruse the shelves again. It was close to lunch time, and he was starting to feel hungry. That was when he noticed the kid from Nine hiding in a corner, looking glum. August was feeling social. What the hell, they were all about to be given carte blanche to kill one another. Might as well be nice beforehand.

”Hey, man. You okay? Wanna talk about it?”
