Beyond the ruins and rubble of the castle, Pearl McClain of District Four and Baby Wessex of District Nine emerge at the edge of a bramble. The roots of the trees are so vast, so massive, they loop and coil like a monstrous snake. Baby instinctively squeezes Pearl's very broken hand and, realizing she's caused her friend pain, squeaks. "I'm so sorry..." and the rest dies on her lips. She doesn't have anything she can use to help Pearl. And she doesn't want to let go...

Baby gasps. "Did you see that?" She points with her free hand, her sword secured across her back. She tugs on Pearl lightly, switching the order of their leading. On light tiptoes Baby chases after the firefly. The little glowing bauble guides them safely skyward, only a few thorns snagging on their new outfits.

"What do you think is up there?" she whispers, eyes full of shadows.
