The hardships no one should suffer do not qualify for this
fifteen year old girl, more than thrice abused, more
than thrice the loss. There is nothing she can do or say
to remove the past memories. She relives the nightmare
night by night, sometimes haunting her in the day. What
sanctuary does she have now? Orchards in District 11
offer her no home, her school is only a place she is
required to go unless she is needed for harvesting. The
smile will remain for her sake, to remain strong for the only
part of her soul that shall survive.
Arianna- The Italian form of Ariadne, it means “most holy”, a fact that
would have remained true had her parents not corrupted that in the first
place. It would be good to note that she shares the name of Ariadne,
the daughter of King Minos who helped Theseus escape the Labyrinth
for this girl knows no direction. In the same way though, she was left
abandoned once her use was completed.
Faith- “Trust”. How ironic that this girl’s middle name means the one thing
she cannot do. It has long since been just another name to her, though,
one that does not describe who she is or who she could be.
Taylor- It’s just a name yet it causes much pain to the girl. It is the name
she cannot rid herself of, but she cannot embrace it all the same.
It is always difficult to look past the appearance when it comes to judgment and Arianna Taylor is no exception. It is not because she has some great beauty or some great default that causes everyone to look at her appearance first; it is the innocence she oozes from her soul. For some reason, the first estimation anyone makes of her age usually rounds to early teens if not a bit earlier. Arianna fails to understand how it is everyone can perceive her to be so young, yet she is often met with “Oh, how adorable.”
Her eyes are not wide but they seem young, free of wrinkles and lines that depict age. There is some darkness under her eyes, mainly from the lack of sleep due to frequent nightmares. The colour is a nice chocolate brown, a shade that must run in the family for her sister has the same irises. Her eyelashes are short but dark, the colour being the only thing similar to her sister. She envies her sister’s long, dark eyelashes, but she knows that there are only so many aspects she can have that are similar to her sister.
Two lines above her eyes are shaped just like her sister’s, either a sign of how much she looks up to her sister or simply the hereditary similarities. Her eyebrows are lighter than her sister’s though, evidence that while they might be sisters, there are differences in their genes. Arianna doesn’t mind the fact that there are some differences between the two; after all, it is just the way life works.
Her light blonde hair is thin and long, each strand eventually twisting into a curl. As a young child, she refused to have it cut and everyone granted her that one request. When she started living with her sister, they no longer could worry about it since there were much more to worry about than just her hair. She admits that it does get in the way at times, but as a result, she simply pulls up her hair into a messy ponytail in order to get it out of her face. Otherwise, she is fairly content with it as it is, messy and all.
While she shares her sister’s height, they do not share the same body type. Her sister is relatively curvy in the necessary places; Arianna is flat like a pancake. It does make her figure seem dissatisfying, but she is okay with it. She feels that it reflects her emotional state, forever immature for her age. She stands two inches short of her sister at 5’7” and weighs at about 105 pounds, therefore meaning she looks healthier but is just about as skinny.
Due to the height-weight correlation along with the sisters’ inability to provide for themselves sufficiently, her arms are thin as are her legs. The only muscles Arianna has are in her back from years of working in the orchards. Her arm muscles are barely there, simply because Arianna uses her back muscles in order to stretch to pick up whatever fruit is need to be picked. When she needs to work with the ground, the constant motion of bending up and then in order to pick up the produce and place it in the collection leads to more work on the back.
One of the things the sisters share is the facial structure, with most of the face settled above the jaw line and then a small chin making its appearance. Sometimes the transition appears rougher, looking like a square head with a random chin attached; other days the transition is smoother as it slopes like her sister’s face does. Arianna dislikes the shape of her face because of its inability to maintain the smooth nature that her sister must have been blessed with. She remains convinced that her sister is the one who received all the good traits while she was stuck with whatever was left.
A voice is important to speak one’s thoughts, but Arianna doesn’t have a voice. She wasn’t born not speaking; she was simply scarred to the point that she could not say anything. As a young child, as when her nightmare began, she kept her mouth shut because that was what her parents told her to do. Then the shock of the deaths caused the young girl to no longer open her mouth except to eat, drink, and breathe. If she attempts to speak, the words come out garbled as she no longer remembers how her voice sounds like or how to form the words she needs. In order for her to communicate she relies on her hands and writing and small head movements. Otherwise, she remains as quiet as possible in the background.
Her skin is not as tan as her sister’s nor does it have any freckles spotted along her face. She was blessed with only having a few pimples along her hair line, but the trade-off was the birthmark that she tries to hide. On the upper right hand side of her face, there is a darkened area that extends from part of the scalp onto her skin. She typically covers it up with part of her hair, allowing it to be hooked by her ear late so a section of her hair can obscure it from view. When she pulls her hair back though, the mark can be seen, causing most observers to stare at it. She is sensitive about it, always turning her head so it will not show, most of the time failing to successfully do so.
But this girl is not so innocent but very innocent at the same time. Emotionally scarred from the traumatic experiences she had gone through when she was younger has her timid and unsure of people. Trust is difficult as members from her own family had let her down her once before. As a result, she stays with her sister as much as she can.
As a fifteen year old, Arianna is supposed to be independent and strong. Her past has stinted her emotional growth, though, causing her to seem like she is several years younger than she really is. When people tell her she acts like a little kid, she no longer takes offense; she knows that it is true and she cannot do anything to fight it. As much as she would love to be an independent young woman, she cannot break the barrier that was put up a long time ago when her parents betrayed her and she found herself living with only her sister.
Eight years after her parents’ deaths, she cannot forgive them for what they had done to her. She considers it the ultimate betrayal in her life; no event could ever amount to what they had done. There may have been some consideration on the effect it has placed on her and the longevity of the act that makes it so difficult for her to get past it. Most of the bad events in her life are blamed on her parents, even if they played no direct role in it. In her mind, they are responsible for everything and they were the ones who screwed it all up.
Her relationship with her sister is a strange one. As a young child, Arianna felt she was distant from Annora, that she was being pushed away by her older sister. However, after certain events that led to the two of them living alone together, she slowly grew closer to Annora, To her, Annora was the mother she should have been having, even if rather inexperienced. In her opinion, they bonded as they learned how to survive together, establishing more of a relationship than the one before the deaths. However, she is still skeptical about her sister after guessing what Annora did during the night. She never questions Annora yet she feels that the trust she had established with her sister has been a bit stretched.
At school, she appears either standoffish or indifferent. Most of the time indifferent, but there are times when her classmates would think she was haughty and reserved for the sake that she seemed to “look down on the others.” Friends are not something Arianna is found of, mainly because she lingers in thoughts of betrayal. Her barrier results in her not being able to be close to anyone but her sister, because who knows what anyone can do to her once they have obtained her trust?
Her intelligence level is average at best, mainly due to her lack of interest in studying. She sees no need to study due to other obligations and the fact that she cannot concentrate in a school environment to begin with. Her teachers do not approve of the fact that she puts in no effort as they are convinced that she could do better in life if she puts in the effort needed. She refuses to give them the satisfaction of being proven right so she makes even more effort to not do well in her courses.
When she sees the Hunger Games, she cannot help but wonder if maybe that would be a better option than the life she is living currently. In fact, sometimes she thinks that death would be a much better option than living her current life. However, she knows it would not be wise to leave Annora alone and stays just so she could try to continue on. There are times when she wishes that she is the one being reaped as she longingly stares at the tributes.
The Taylor family from a distance appeared to be a normal family. Gianna Forcewith and Kraden Taylor were a happy couple who got married and had kids. Their first child was Gregory Taylor, a firstborn son. Their second child was Annora Hope Taylor, two years his junior. It seemed like the best way to complete the family, having a mother, father, son, and daughter. But they decided that another one would really be what made the family more together.
The youngest child of three, Arianna Faith Taylor became number five in the family. She was completely unaware of her parents’ condition, but only knew that her siblings seemed to be affected in some way. However, as a young child, she waved it away, not knowing that she would later be affected by that condition as well. After all, her parents were very good with discretion and cover-ups.
It was around the age of five when she learned what had been happening. It started with her father telling her to go to her room and wait patiently on her bed as he longingly stared at the table in front of him. She assumed that it meant he was going to give her a good night kiss, something he had never done, and went to her bedroom like a good little girl would have done. Instead, she was met with something strange, something she could not comprehend. All she knew was that it hurt immensely and she wanted it to be over as soon as possible.
Most of the time it would be her father who would tell her to go to her room, but sometimes her mother would be the one to send her way. She never understood what was happening, only wondering if it would ever end. She would try to talk to her older siblings to ask if they knew what their parents were doing, but they refused to say anything to her, leaving her in the dark. The little girl was hindered by her lack of knowledge and her inability to comprehend what was being done to her small body, causing her to remain immature.
Unlike her siblings, she only had to go through two years of the torment placed on her by the adult figures in the home. She had no idea what happened, only hearing the shouts as she shakily waited in her room for her turn. The next thing she knew, her brother was standing in her doorway, looking worse for the wear. Annora was there with him, causing Arianna to be considered about what had happened. Were they going to harm her too, just like how her parents had harmed her? Instead Gregory took Arianna by the hand and brought her close to her siblings. With a long hug to the both of them, Gregory disappeared. Arianna could hear the shuffling on the roof but assumed that it was the wind blowing against the house. However, once Annora and Arianna looked, they noticed that they no longer had their brother. It was no pretty sight in Gregory’s room either, as their parents were dead in a pool of blood. Not knowing what else to do, the two sisters rid the body.
Life was difficult as they found their selves living alone and with little to survive off of. Arianna frequently wondered how it was Annora kept on going, but she was determined to do the same so she went to school and hid behind her mask. But deeper in, she was a scared being who didn’t know what to do. Her nights were plagued with nightmares, only for her to wake up and feel relieved that she no longer had to go through those torments. She kept quiet as much as possible, fearing what would happen if she were to accidentally say something. After all, the last thing she wanted was to be torn away from her sister.
School was just another place for her to be afraid of. There was nothing secure about that place where all they did was gain information that was being fed to their brain. It taught nothing about the real world, the skills they would need to know in order to survive the rough living. And if it had, Arianna must have missed that lesson. She thought it would be useless to be there, that she could have spent more time working in the orchards in order to help her and her sister survive. Her focus in class was minimal at best and she soon dropped from being a studious child to one who seemed not to pay much attention to class at all, neglecting her “responsibilities” to the district.
She noticed that they were starting to have more money than usual, something that surprised her because between her hours in the orchards and her sister’s hours, there was no possibility that they could be doing that well. So one night, she followed her sister to wherever it was she was going. As soon as she saw a faint picture of what was happening, she ran her way back home, not believing that it was her sister who was doing all of the bad stuff. It made sense but Arianna refused to believe it was true, and she decided that she would continue to believe it. Even as a fifteen year old, she did not want to admit that her sister was working her way through customers during the night. It became yet another secret Arianna kept to herself.
