The sweet sweat of the vine
Brings us peace with dine
And do us love this fine ones keeper
Since without it life would seem a tad bit steeper
At the age oftwenty plus nineThirty
One might say he fancies wine
Wobbling around yet most of the day
This male eventually finds his way
Speaking truth, if truths much clearer
His love is wine, it is quiet dear
Being a party boy at heart
What he really wants is a start
To the false side of lies
Yes, importing berries is a crime
Yet one must pay the fruitful price
Of fighting fire, with alcohol on iceAppearanceStanding at the below average height of 5'8", he makes up for his lack of height with his excessive weight. Obtuse would be a word that one might use to describe him, but somehow one might relate this mans body shape to the shape of a beach ball. The excess weight that his body carries around makes Merlots walk appear as more of a waddle, something that people tend to laugh about behind his back.
Amaretto colored curls sit on top of his head. having clean cut hair is one thing that Merlot values while sober. One might find this care odd considering the untidy facial hair that he chooses to keep. Growing out from both sideburns in short curl that reach all the way down to a rounded chin, where the two sides meet. The behemoth of a beard takes the same color as his hair, though the coloration seems to appear slightly darker right where his chin lies.
One might say that his head appears the shape of an upside down house with perfect symmetry. With an excessively long forehead, the height between his eyebrows and hair line seems pushed together. The beard that seems this mans prominent feature makes for a chin that appears like a triangle. Though surrounded by a district of somewhat olive skinned people, a color that is close to the inside of a white peach is what this man skin's shade is.
Almond shaped eyes lie in symmetry on his forehead. Eyes the color of clouds on a stormy eve sit plainly on this mans face. Nothing but the two grey orbs sit inside this mans eyes, they are quite boring to look at, just like the rest of this man.
Despite all of his visual faults, Merlot skin shows no acne scars, he never had the problem of being adorned with those awful red bumps. Thanks to this his nose was able to keep its normal, hooked shape. The front most point of its bridge extends past the farthest points of both sides, not in a very attractive way, I might add.
Both his upper and lower lip are exceptionally small. While looking down upon him - which many do - one is not even able to see his upper lip. It almost always seems that Merlot has a slight smile adorning his face, one might wonder why, but he would not have an answer, life just seems like a jest to this man.
Two ears appear pinned back behind this mans beard. Seeming too small for his head, one would jest wondering about how this man could hear, though despite rumors, he does actually hear quite well. His tiny ears are much to small for his head, which in turn, is much too large for his body.
As one might expect Merlot wears the mandatory white Peacekeeper uniform while on the job, but he has a much different taste of clothing during his spare time. Blue jeans adorn his two stumpy legs per usual, yet he only takes to one type of shirt. If one was to open his closet all they would fine is a collection or purple and blue colored shirts. Considering his more than decent pay, one really would find it odd that he does not have more options within his wardrobe.HistoryUnlike many Peacekeepers, Merlot grew up in the Capitol. People wondered why he ever left his luxurious home, everyone knew about the grandeur lifestyle of Capitol citizens, but Merlot never had any interest in living that way. Yes, parties and wine were of this mans interests, he still did not enjoy doing nothing. Though he was not part or the Capitols poor he was not part of its rich, which was quite the odd social situation as a child. He always found that he was either going to houses much worse than his, or houses with superiority to his. When the richer of the two, he felt embarrassed to be a friend of someone poorer than him, but when he was with someone richer, he felt like he did not have enough.
Always afraid to ask his parents for more, he never had much for a child in the Capitol. His parents wondered what made their son so not needy, they always expected for him to want everything. Being that it was not the norm to be frugal in the Capitol, Merlot's parents though that something was wrong with their son. Even with their worries, they never did express their fears of their son in public.
Being part of the popular group in school was probably Merlot's best social accomplishment as a child. Probably the only reason that he made any friends at all was his natural ability to be funny. Jesting was something that came as second nature to Merlot, people genuinely laughed at his jokes, which fueled his self confidence even though he was getting fatter and fatter every single day.
Having excess body weight never was a trend in the Capitol, yet Merlot felt just fine having that extra weight on him. People were friends with him, so why would he want to change, yet when he got older, this really started to effect Merlot. Being that he was a Heterosexual Merlot found quite an interest in women, but they really found no interest in him. Merlot found no reason for this, though it was obvious to everyone else in the world. Merlot's fat made him unattractive as a whole to girls. If his facial unattractiveness was Merlots only problem then girls might have fancied him, but since he also had weight issues, nobody at all wanted to have any intimate relationship with him.
While Merlot was getting fatter, he was also getting more emotional and was complaining more and more. He found it harder to stand up for even short amounts of time and was quite vocal about the pain that he felt. Most of the humorous charm that Merlot once had no longer could shine through his complaining. Merlot quickly became obsolete to his so-called friends. They did not take a liking to his new attitude, and thus he lost all of the friends that he once had.
Now somewhat upset at the world, Merlot started to eat more than he previously had. The time that he used to spend with his friends he now spent with endless amounts of food. Merlot found it unfair that his friends had just disregarded him so quickly. Spending more and more time inside his house, Merlot became a hermit, he had no interests in the people of the Capitol anymore, he believed that he was just a better person overall than the rest of the people in the Capitol.
Merlot spent the rest of his teenage years doing almost nothing except eating. Boredom became a prominent fixture in his life until he found what he says is his savior. Wine. This first time that Merlot tasted wine, he felt like he was in heaven, he loved its taste. Everywhere Merlot went he was accompanied by a bottle of wine. Being that Merlot had nobody who actually cared about him, nobody stopped him from this new found addiction to wine.
Quickly Merlot became addicted, spending more and more time in a drunken stupor than out of it. Most mornings Merlot had no clue where he was waking up and why he had a headache. Living a carefree life looked like fun at first to Merlot, but quickly it became an endless spiral of issues. Possibly the biggest issue that Merlot faced besides his drinking problem was his growing debt. Merlot was spending money that he did not have for a long time.
Angry phone calls frequented many of Merlot's days. He waved these calls off, thinking they were nothing to worry about, he thought that he would be fine. Spending most of his teenage years alone Merlot never was able to learn how much money really meant to people. Merlot did not realize how serious his situation was until people came to his house and just took things that he owned, he couldn't even stop them because he was drunk. That moment was almost like an intervention for Merlot, he realized that money actually mattered and that he had to stop, but he had no way of making money, so he turned to becoming a Peacekeeper.
Training did not go exceptionally well for Merlot, he was out of shape and the fact that the food was rationed did not help him at all. He always found himself to be hungry and was complaining even more than he usually would. The instructors did not exactly like this about Merlot, but they let him stay in training, they thought that they might end up having some use for him later.
Being that training was semi-active, Merlot did start to lose weight, consuming much less food than he did before he actually started to look somewhat decent weight wise, he was actually starting to become somewhat happy with the way that he looked. Though he was not allowed to drink wine while training, he still forced himself to get through training. It was the only way for him to make money, and money was what he needed to obtain wine.
Finally finishing his training, Merlot was sent to the lowly District Twelve. He thought that this was because his instructor hated his attitude from the first few months of training, but he did not mind his assignment. He was actually overjoyed that he would go to the easiest district. There would be less of an influence on what he did while in District Twelve, he would be able to work how he wanted to work, the Capitols eye would not be on him.
Seeing District Twelve for the first time distraught Merlot, he did not think that people could be this poor, but he quickly got over that fact. The people were somewhat obedient and they never really spoke out against the Capitol, he found his job exceptionally easy, a great thing for him. Merlot hated having to try at work, and he very rarely had to try. Whippings were not often occurrences in this district, a good fact for Merlot. The only problem that Merlot really had with District Twelve was getting wine.
Finding that liquor was of a premium in District Twelve he turned to the illegal dealings of the Hob. It was easy for him trade there since he was one of the few people who actually had money in District Twelve. He ended up spending most of his time in a drunken stupor again, but his boss did not really care. He quickly regained the drinking problems that he had before, but this time nobody was there to stop him in a nice way or by force.PersonalityIf one was to use one word to describe Merlot, more often than not 'humorous' would be the word picked. Being able to lighten up the mood of a conversation is a gift that Merlot has had all of his life. The fact that he also drinks quite a bit does not hurt this impression, as he does tend to act in a more comical way while under the influence of alcohol.
Action has never been an important part of Merlot's life. Always trying to do the least possible is basically his motto at work. He even went through Peacekeeper training so that he could have less work. Basically, all this man wants is to get paid for sitting on his ass.
Merlot takes his daily interactions as half-hearted jokes. He thinks that people ask him to do things because they are too lazy to do those things themselves, but really, they are only asking Merlot to help them because it is his job. It should not come as a surprise that Merlot is always the last one out on the job every morning and the last one to return at night.
Social interactions are mostly based on time for Merlot. During the day he would much rather be alone, not liking the company of other people, mostly enjoying the company of food on a plate. But once he goes into his nightly stupor he has quite different feelings. Once drunk, it is not uncommon for a random, decent looking District Twelve girl to find her way into his bed. It also is not uncommon for Merlot to wake up with slightly less money those next mornings.
Despite the fact that he is attracted to women, love is not an emotion that Merlot has ever felt in his life. He wants to believe that love exists, but that is really only a small hope in his heart. He doubts that a man like him will ever feel love, especially now that he works in District Twelve. A Peacekeeper marrying someone from their district of work would never be accepted, especially if that district was District Twelve. Merlot doubted that if he was to find love, it would never happen while he was a Peacekeeper.
Merlot's love for wine has made him quite a vulnerable person. While he is drunk he takes anything said to him in a very personal way. Any time someone insults him, he tries to insult them back, but never has the energy to. When this happens, he just ends up sitting where he was in his chair looking sad. Basically, while drunk his emotions are as sensitive as a teenager going through puberty.
