Airelynn Hathor
Age 16
District 8
When flowers gaze at you
They're not the only ones who cry
When they see you
Airelynn is not beautiful. She could be considered pretty, but not beautiful. Her body is just a little to bruised for that. And she has a grotesque scar on the right side of her neck, which is normally hidden by her hair.
Airelynn's bruises cover her thighs, calves, and stomach. The newer bruises are piled upon older bruises that never properly healed. Because of this, they are all red and inflamed, and her stomach and legs are a little swollen and weak.
It's extremely rare, though, that you will ever even catch a glimpse of these bruises. Airelynn always wears long pants and normally long shirts, no matter what the weather might be at that time of the year. None of her clothes are ever revealing to any degree.
Airelynn isn't built thin, but has become so from repeatedly missing meals. She would look anorexic, but her loose clothing and swollen skin covers up the fact nicely. She weighs about 95 lbs. She stands at about 5'5, an average height.
And then there's the pleasant side of her body... Well, Airelynn has chestnut colored hair that has natural honey highlights. Her hair falls in layers just past her shoulders. It's quite silky, although it lacks some volume. She also has bangs that are cut just above her eyebrows, and are usually swept in the general direction of the right side of her forehead.
Airelynn's hazel eyes lean more towards green than brown, and they match her hair color quite nicely. Her eyes are framed by thick brown lashes. Above her eyes lay Airelynn's slightly thick eyebrows that lie just a bit too far down on her forehead.
Airelynn has a nicely shaped face and rosy cheeks. Her nose is only slightly too prominent on her face. Her lips are perpetually pale and slightly chapped from all of her work in the fields.
Airelynn has pale skin that can be rather dry due because of her anorexia issues. It burns rather easily, but has become more used to this problem from constantly being in the sun. Airelynn still has a scar on her back from a particularly hot week of work when the sun scarred her.
You don't know me
You don't even care
Oh yeah
Airelynn is really a very sweet girl. She has a pleasant disposition and acts very calmly and maturely. It was once said that Airelynn acts twice her age. It is quite true that she has an old soul. Airelynn just hasn't been capable of letting loose and acting recklessly since the accident.
It's almost tragic how Airelynn has become so meek since the accident. Before, Airelynn was a wild child. She got into the worst sorts of trouble. She could be quite reckless and rebellious. Airelynn would always make her own fun, being the creative sort.
That is something that remained with her after the accident. Airelynn has always been a very creative person. She doodles in her classes at school, and she weaves beautiful blankets and clothing items from cotton. She makes her own dyes, too, although she can't always find many ingredients. The dyes led to painting, however, which led to drawing. In short, Airelynn is a very artistic person.
However, her creatively rarely shines through her withdrawn personality. Airelynn used to be an outgoing, fun-loving, somewhat obnoxious girl. That side of her still exists, deep down, buried beneath her feelings of guilt and shame. Those features are no longer the prominent sides of her personality, though, and they are very rarely seen by others.
The guilt. Most of Airelynn's current personality traits can be attributed to guilt. And other things, too.
Airelynn is a masochist. She blames herself for the accident, and at first she felt like she deserved the pain. Now she loves it. Her father beats her about once a week, and she also is an on-and-off again anorexic. She revels in the abuse. The loves the bruises. She feels like she deserves them. And Airelynn is a fair person.
However, she isn't stupid enough to think that everyone shares her same views. Airelynn hides her abused body because she thinks that people would try to help her, and she doesn't want them to. This is the only bit of rebelliousness that she still clings to. She still keeps to her beliefs, as distorted as they may be.
Airelynn also has a self-sacrificing hero-complex. It seems to come along with her strong beliefs. She tries to save people and help them even when they don't want help. Most of the time, this creates more problems than it solves. People just don't want to be saved. It's rather hypocritical of Airelynn to not realize this.
You don't know me
You don't wear my chains
Oh yeah
Airelynn was the second child of poor but cheerful shepherds, Amalynn and Gaer Hathor. Her older brother Garrett was two years older than her, and although he was originally opposed to her birth, he quickly became very protective of her.
Airelynn was a wild child. She could be very reckless, and irresponsible. Garrett considered it his job to keep her safe, because their parents didn't ever have time. It wasn't their fault; they really did love their children. They just wanted to keep their modest home, and they had to work hard to provide a relatively comfortable living environment for their children.
The twins were born when Airelynn was four. At that time, the Hathor's were in a particularly troubled spot. They were extremely close to losing their home. They were only just about to hang on, getting money in the most unconventional ways.
They still loved and raised Agalynn and Gerrard with love and tenderness, however. The Hathors were a kind family, and they took care of their own. Back then, at least. Things changed, but they were good for a while.
In that time, Airelynn and Garrett got into the worst sorts of trouble. Airelynn was always the instigator, the trouble-maker. At the ages of six and eight, they weren't old enough yet to work in the fields, so they were able to create mayhem all throughout the District
One day they were running along the streets, Garrett chasing after his fleet-footed sister, who had stolen his book so that she could get him to play with her. He was quieter than his younger sister, not quite as boisterous or obnoxious. He enjoyed reading, so he certainly didn't appreciate his sister's antics.
He chased her until he ran into a Peacekeeper, who took great offense to the young child. Garrett received ten lashes on the back that day. Airelynn witnessed them all. He started bleeding at three, puked at seven, and had passed out by the time they were finished. Airelynn helped wake him up, bring him home, and make him feel a bit better. At the time it seemed like the worst day of both of their young lives.
Garrett could never see Airelynn the same way after that day. He was no longer her protective big brother, because she had become a menace, in his eyes. Dangerous. She was the reason he always felt a twinge of pain when he sat up straight.
Airelynn felt a great amount of hurt when her brother began to act cold toward her. She didn't know what to do without her brother. He was the constant in her life. The twins were close (already), and she and Garrett were close. Inseparable. He had always been a small part of her, the part that told her what she could and couldn't do.
She felt lost without him. She became a demon child. Wild and one-hundred percent irresponsible. She began to act out, even at her young age. One day, when she was eleven, her parents left the twins in her care. They should've known better.
Airelynn took the twins out into the fields, where the two climbed into a cart as Airelynn began to push it down a hill. It started to go to fast, speeding down the hill at lightning speed. The twins became incredibly panicked. They were worried about crashing at the bottom of the hill, which came about rather abruptly. They jumped out of the speeding cart together, holding hands.
Gerrard died that day. Agalynn was traumatized, and the doctors diagnosed her with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Airelynn's normally loving parents became angry and blamed her, rightfully so. They didn't know what to do with her.
Gerrard was dead, and it was Airelynn's fault. Agalynn had started to mutter things, often talking about about string and carrying around a ratty blanket that had belonged to Gerrard. Amalynn and Gaer became very stressed about this. Gaer started to drink, becoming more passionate and angry. Amalynn became a shell of her former self, living only to help Agalynn.
Garrett, of course, was also deeply involved with this. He started to become protective of Agalynn, not letting anyone touch the insane girl. No one seemed to be taking care of the Hathor's financial needs, and responsibility was thrust onto Airelynn's shoulders.
She didn't know how to deal with anything. Her father had recently hit her, her brother was shunning her, her mother was oblivious to her, her little sister was traumatized because of her, and her other brother was dead because of her. Everything was her fault. And she now had to take care of her family.
She was finally old enough that fall to take out five tesserae. That provided some extra food and money. And she also started to work in the fields. She discovered around that time that she could be quite creative. She became quieter and more reserved as her father continued to abuse her.
It seemed as if she had switched spots with Garrett, who became passionate and fiery. Garrett worked, but only to take care of Agalynn's medical bills. Airelynn was reminded constantly of how Garrett used to be protective of her. She began to hate herself for what she'd done. She thought that her father was right to abuse her.
The accident scarred her forever. She couldn't forgive herself for it. At the age of thirteen, she became an anorexic. Seven months later, she stopped. Then started again. The trend continued. She abused her body by starving herself, while her father beat her about once a week.
Over time, Airelynn came to love the pain. She loved the abuse she felt from her family. Hate from all directions. It worked for her. She hated herself, why shouldn't everyone else? Abuse was beauty.
