Appearance:
Thanks to a hormone deficiency that she doesn’t have the money to treat Heron’s appearance is in complete opposition of her gender. She has a strong, square jaw and a wide chin. Her nose is large and slightly crooked, having been broken several times. Her eyes are a dark, rich blue and set deep, giving her a constant look of tiredness or boredom. Her eyebrows are thick, black and unmanaged, going every which way complementing her ‘scruffy guy’ look. Her hair is black and haphazardly cut to her chin line. Since it wasn’t cut in a straight line but razored with a dull knife it hung awkwardly at different lengths and often got in her eyes. The only thing even slightly soft about her face was her shapely lips, but they didn’t do much in helping her look like a girl. In fact, they simply made her look like a pretty boy who was very rough around the edges.Personality:
Even her body is masculine; being 6’ 0” she towers over other girls her age. She weighs 150 pounds which was mostly all muscle mass, giving her the average bodily proportions of a slightly starving boy her age. Her hands are almost twice the size of the average girls and calluses cover them from hard work. Being so large she can do man’s work and lift heavy things, but the size of her body has it’s downfalls as well. She is clumsy and awkward with her hands and stature. She doesn’t fall often, but she does break things like a bull in a china shop. More specifically; like a teenage boy just getting used to his new body.
You will never see this tomboy near a dress. On a normal day she would wear black jeans that were hand-me-downs from her father and cousin, a sleeveless tee shirt, be it black, white, grey or brown, and an old denim jacket that her father had given her. For shoes she had worn grey sneakers, but often times she would just go barefoot. During special occasions she would wear a worn leather vest that her mother had given her and she would even bother with putting in earrings, even though they made her look more like a rebellious teenage boy than a girl.
Growing up in the poorest of districts was extremely difficult for Heron, shaping her personality as if it were the coal the villagers chipped away at every day, only deeper engraining it into her person. Hardships made her rough, calloused and untrusting. She stands up for the honor of her family name before standing up for herself in particular. Even though she is only eighteen years old she acts as though the weight of a lifetime is on her shoulders, easily taking on the burdens of her household as her parents work in the mines.History:
Being rough around the edges has its advantages and disadvantages. It gives a sort of protection, when you’re friends with roughians, but it also sets fear into the mindset of the weaker and fragile. That is what she hates most about herself; she scares people. But she is a master at hiding her pain in front of her friends, who she has a soft spot for, not that she’d ever tell them that. When most of your friends are guys, and they think you are a guy too, it tends to change the feminine perspective.
She is rude more often that she would like to be and harsher than necessary to get a point across, but on the inside she is doing just as much damage to herself as her ‘victim’, if not more. For as much as she wants so desperately to love, she knows that she would only hurt them with her harsh words and actions so she stays at a safe distance, secretly clinging to what friends she has for support. She is the type of person that will sit in the rain and drown in her own self pity and loathing when all she really wants to do it twirl in the wet droplets. Maybe someday she’ll be able to be the girl that she was born to be.
Heron’s parents, Camellia and Arrow Kimberling, were surprised to learn that they were expecting another child, already having a teenage son, Finch. And when she was born they named her after the great blue heron, a bird that they’ve only ever seen in texts in school since it became extinct in their area a few generations prior. Finch was a doting brother to his baby sister until he was killed in a mining accident when she was only six years old. She didn’t understand what had happened at the time, but looking back now she is proud of how strong her parents were for handling it. They explained to her that she was given to them because their boy was going to be taken away and they called it a fair trade.Codeword: <img src="http://i41.tinypic.com/16h2ibt.png">
Her parents questioned her when she started coming home with bruises or crying for being made fun of because of her boyish attributes in elementary school, but she always claimed to be alright. Her parents did all they could to help them survive day by day in the Seam and she didn’t want them to worry about her. By the time she was in middle school they knew something was different with her and they saved what little money they could for a year until they were able to afford to see someone more skilled than the Seam medicine woman. That’s when they learned that their little girl would never be like other girls and they agreed to have her masquerade as a boy of her own suggestion.
Heron has long since gotten over the fact that the only people who still know that she is a girl are her parents and she has managed a decently normal life in the Seam. She took over her brother’s place in her parent’s lives in more way than one and soon she would be able to work in the mines and help to provide for their family too. All she needed to do was keep her true identity a secret for a time longer and she would be able to do men’s work in the mines and earning a slightly larger paycheck. Granted she is not found out by an official or, say, a reaping.
