Taffy Riddle had survived another Reaping, clinging to her father’s arm. She’d felt guiltily relieved not to have been selected. Her life had gone back to its regular routine and once she’d finished cleaning up the house Taffy had snuck out of the house. She made her way back to the college, hat seemed to be the best place to do her people watching. The air was still crisp and cold so in place of her short shorts tank top, Taffy wore tattered jeans and boots with a orange ruffled sweater. It was an ugly sweater but Taffy felt she pulled it off fairly well. She smiled at those she passed by on her way to the college, her freshly washed curls bouncing on top her head. Some smiled back, others were in a darker mood it seemed which was understandable seeing as the reaping had just taken place a few days ago.
Taffy picked her way through the crowded areas and found an empty bench facing the college. She took a seat and stared across at the building wondering what the people inside were learning. Taffy had mentioned attending the college to her parents one night over a meal but they didn’t seem to think it was a good idea. Her brothers had laughed at her for suggesting it. She watched as people went in and out of the college carrying books and pencils and such. The books were huge and Taffy grimaced. She wasn’t exactly the best reader. She decided her parents were probably right about not attending the college.
There was a breeze that chilled Taffy’s exposed skin and made her shiver. She pulled her long legs up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them, resting her chin on her knees. Her eyes searched around for something more interesting than books to watch, like boys. Boys were always fun to watch, especially if they caught Taffy staring at them. She would smile back at them and see how they reacted. Sometimes they would come and speak to her and that was always fun. She liked to talk to girls too, but she was taller than most girls and it made her feel a little awkward. She’d find someone interesting soon enough and then the fun would really start! She smiled to herself, her eyes still searching as the breeze ruffled her hair…
