Dawn had just come, the sun gleaming through the small windows throughout the house. Everything was silent except for Thalia, who was quickly throwing on the warmest clothes that she had; though they were all thin and torn. Today she did not have to go to the cotton fields until the afternoon, which meant she would have the whole morning to spend in the forrest.

She knew that if Lila knew about her secret and frequent visits to the forrest, Thalia would surely be in horrible trouble and never allowed to go back; considering her horrible past. Thalia's golden brown eyes filled with nervousness and guilt as she thought about it, but she couldn't live without the happiness the forrest gave her.

Thalia silently slipped through the front door, wind immediatly whipping at her face and blowing her long brown hair out behind her. She hugged her jacket closer to her, though she might have been wearing nothing for all the help it gave. The snow gradually fell around her, it crunching with each step she took.

Her eyes narrowed into slits and she squinted through the snow, that almost completely clouded her vision. She stopped, having the thought to head back home and come back another day, but the forrest that she could barely see in the distance tempted her to proceed forwards.

She could see the spot under the fence where she usually slipped under, her eyes gleaming with undeniable excitement. Her eyes darted around her, making sure that no one was watching. She darted behind the sides of buildings, staring longingly at the fence before her.

˚ ˛ •˛• ˚ ˚ It was just one of those days where Chloe was cold, and so was the rest of District 8. She was rummaging through her house, trying to desperately find something warm. While looking through her closet in her room, she felt something, a fuzzy, blue sweater. This is better than nothing. thought Chloe, and in truth, it was. She was sick of her boring house, so she walked out her bland white front door with a slam, that was a way so her parents knew she was leaving, since she doesn't talk and everything.

Chloe walked around the District, seeing snow mounds here in there. When she walked pass the cotton fields, she thought, No way. Chloe never even been in there, since she was a weaving, not a cotton collector. Then she spotted the forest, and was so tempted, she ran in there.

Thalia suddenly darted to the fence, her golden-brown eyes focused on the hole beneath it. She quickly dove onto her belly, easily sliding underneath from years of doing it, and the snow. She stood up, shivering slightly as the cold wind whipped at her damp clothing.

She took a step, the snow crunching once again beneath her shoes. Thalia suddenly froze as she saw a girl running into the forest a little ways beside her. She glanced quickly around her, wondering if there were any other people.

Thalia had rarely ever seen another person in the forrest, and it often caused her to be very nervous. She suddenly had the instinct to turn back around, but something told her that she should proceed.

She sighed and silently stepped into the cover of the trees, her curiousity overcoming her as she turned in the direction that the girl had went. She once again tugged her torn jacket around her as she walked, narrowing her eyes through the snow to get a better look.

Chloe was running through the forest darting as far in as she could. She tripped over a log and fell into a pile of snow. Great. Just great. Chloe mumbled to herself, brushing off the white specks. She crawled over to a spot of the forest without any snow covering it. It took her less than thirty seconds or so. She placed her black hair on her scrawny shoulders as she rests her body the damp leaves. That's when she notices the girl darting towards her.

This will be great, I'll be ignored because I'm anti-social, get left out here, and starve to death. That wasn't very positive, but she had to face some of the truth. When the girl was in her plain view, Chloe gave a quick wave. Indicating she was friendly enough.

Thalia slowed slightly when she saw the girl trip over the log. Her eyes filled with curiousity as she proceeded towards her. She crossed her arms across her, hugging her torn jacket closer to her as she walked through the snow. 'Who is this?' she thought as she was a few steps away when she stopped.

Thalia's eyes wandered over the girl, smiling slightly "Are you okay?" she asked, tilting her head. Her golden-brown eyes gleamed with cautiousness as thoughts began to spill into her head 'what if she came in here to spy on me, and after this she reports me to the Peacekeepers?' Thalia took a slight step back at the thought, clenching her hands into fists.

She sighed under her breath, forcing the thought away as she waited for the girl's answer; if she gave one. Thalia had never seen her before, but that might have been because she was so busy all the time, or because she was younger.

Chloe's clumsiness was really over the top in the snow, with all the ice and not always being able to see. But when the girl walks up to her, one she doesn't recognize, it's hard not to see her. Chloe puts on a brief smile. "Are you okay?" Asks the girl. Chloe doesn't really want to talk to this girl, since she doesn't like to talk at all. Chloe then has an idea, she grabs a stick and writes: Yes, I'm fine_" Chloe wasn't meaning for the stick to crack when she was writing the period.

Chloe doesn't enjoy the snow too much and she is instantly shivering. Hopefully, it will get warmer.

Thalia stared at the girl, frowning slightly in confusion as the girl wrote the words 'Yes I'm fine.' She tried her best to hide the confusion in her gaze, though her expression was easily recognized. 'Maybe she just doesn't like to talk' she thought silently as she smiled towards the girl.

"Sorry I'm bothering you, I just thought you were..." she trailed off at the end of her sentence, not voicing that she thought this girl had come to spy on her and report her to the Peacekeepers. Then again, it would be nice to have company in the forrest that so often gave her comfort from her hard life back inside the fence.

Thalia saw her shiver, wishing she could do something. Her own jacket didn't even offer anything for Thalia, so it most likely wouldn't do anything for the girl. "I'm Thalia Rose" she said nicely. She offered out her hand to help her up..if she wanted to get up from the cold and icy ground.

Thalia stared down at her fingers, the skin stretched tightly against her bones, and covered with dirt and blisters. She sighed quietly and ignored it, her golden-brown eyes gazing intently at the girl in front of her.[/color]

"Are you okay?" asks the girl who Chloe is examining. She has brilliant golden eyes. "Sorry I'm bothering you, I just thought you were..." What would Chloe be, a a killer, a spy, and then it hits her. She thinks I'm here and I'm going to tell the peacekeepers. Chloe thinks is sort of crazy, since she isn't really a big fan on snitches.

"I'm Thalia Rose" the girl said. That's a beautiful name. Thought Chloe. When Thalia reached her hand out, Chloe used it to get up. She was instantly warmer. Chloe looked at the girl, and mouthed the words; Thank You.

Thalia smiled as she used her hand to get up. She watched as she mouthed the words 'Thank you.' Her eyes gleamed with warmth, replacing the cautiousness as she nodded. 'She can't be a spy, she's too nice' she thought in relief.

"Is it..okay if I ask you what your name is? Well I guess I just did, b-but you don't have to answer. You could write it in the snow, I mean only if you want to-" Thalia stopped as she noticed she was chattering away again. She bit her lip in embarassment, this was something people often got annoyed about or found it amusing.

She sighed under her breath, glancing out of the corner of her eye towards the fence, her cheeks flushing a bright pink; adding to the already sunburnt tint to them. She gazed back at the girl, wondering why she didn't talk. 'What if she's an Avox? Wait no that's not possible, they're in the capitol' she thought, her golden eyes clouding slightly..

Chloe was still cold, but getting helped up and not sitting on the snow made her a lot warmer. At least the jacket she was wearong was thick, or else the snow wouldv'e came through and froze her body. Well not literally. But she would be pretty cold, and she'd have to leave. Sure, Chloe really wasn't going to talk to anyone. She hasn't for about eight years. But she felt that even though she's really anti-social, if this girl is nice enough, and she was so far, then Chloe wouldn't mind communicating. The smell of berries filled her nose, and she spotted a bush, it had few berries, but there was enough, Chloe could easily reach her hand out and grab two. She hid them behind her back.

"Is it..okay if I ask you what your name is? Well I guess I just did, b-but you don't have to answer. You could write it in the snow, I mean only if you want to-" Chloe wasn't really expecting her to ask that, she really didn't even use her name too much now that she's out of school. But it was still Chloe and she was willing to share it with the girl. She grabbed the stick she was using before and wrote; Chloe. She didn't feel like putting her last name, it's too long and useless and a waste of time. Even though she did have plenty of time. In fact, she had time to kill. With that, she grabbed one of the berries and gave it to the girl. Then, Chloe shrugged her shoulders, and plopped it in her mouth.

Thalia stared at the girl, biting her lip nervously as she waited to see if the girl would answer. She caught the slightest glimpse of her pulling the berries and holding them behind her back. Her eyes filled slightly with curiousity.

She watched as the girl picked up the stick and began to write her name. Thalia's golden eyes lit up with happiness, atleast she could communicate with her. "Chloe.." she said slowly as she read out the words. "I like it" she said nicely, a warm smile playing across her young face.

Thalia caught the berry in her fingers, staring at it cautiously. She could almost hear the faint sound of her mother's voice 'don't eat any plants that you don't recognize' she would tell her. Thalia's eyes that were often filled with joy and laughter had a glimpse of weariness in them as she listened to the faintness of the sound, wishing she could hold onto it forever before it completely disappeared.

She forced the depressing thoughts away from her mind as she watched Chloe plop the berry in her mouth. She wanted to say something to her about it, but then again maybe there wasn't anything wrong with them. Thalia simply waited, glancing nervously at the bush the berries had come from.

When Chloe gave the berry to the girl she looked, concerned. Of course Chloe, being a little too curious, ate it to fast. At least Thalia had said she liked her name. Chloe smiled, and nodded. Hoping that Thalia knew that was a thank you of some sort. She still had the berry in her hand, refusing to eat it. Chloe didn't exactly know what there was to worry about. She wasn't being her naive self. She was rushing and careless. Chloe shrugged her shoulders again. If they were poisonous, she would die soon enough. "Don't worry, I think they're saf-" Chloe couldn't really finish her sentence, mainly because she threw up, and then fell to the floor, dead. The last thought of hers was; I actually talked.

Thalia watched her in surprise as she talked, a wide smile forming on her face. The smile abruptly turned to horror as Chloe hunched forward, throwing up. Thalia froze as Chloe fell to the forrest ground in a single second, right after she had spoken to Thalia for the first time.

"Chloe!" she yelled, her voice sounded distant to her as she knelt down next to the girl. Her eyes darted around anxiously, tears beginning to form in her golden eyes. 'I will not witness another death' she thought in determination. She shook her many times "Chloe wake up!" she pleaded, her voice sounding like the girl so long ago that had pleaded for her mother to come back.

Thalia stood from where she knelt, knowing that if she brought Chloe back in the district, the Peacekeepers would surely know that they had both gotten into the forrest. A thought nagged at the back of her mind 'the plants' "The plants!" she murmered. She knew that Chloe was most likely dead already, but she would not allow herself to give up so easily.

Thalia ran off quickly, staring at all of the plants her mother had used to teach her about. Several of the ones she needed were dead from the frozen snow, useless. Thalia rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand 'I'm going to have to go back into the district'she thought immediatly. She was willing to risk her own safety for this girl she had just met, something that her and her mother used to have in common.

Thalia swiftly ran back to Chloe's limp form, hoisting her up with her hands. Although Chloe was light, Thalia was also only a very skinny 12 year-old girl. Thalia did her best to drag her to the fence, knowing that she was wasting precious time. She slipped under the hole, pulling Chloe in after her.

"Help!" she called out to the still air, tears falling down her rosy cheeks. She dragged her a few more steps, already becoming exhausted. "Help.." she said to the empty street, still holding Chloe's hand that she was using to drag her with.

EPILOGUE

People always said something along the lines: Your flashes before your eyes when you die. I can now say that's true. After eating the berries, and throwing up, between the seconds I dropped to the floor, I saw images. Ones of my life, my favorite memories, my worst. My dad and mom's faces. My first day of school. The day I stopped talking. When I started weaving. And when I just talked.
I could remember events that were better, or worse, than most of them, where was my first birthday that I remember? Or an image of me looking in the mirror, realizing how I've gone mute?

Ohh, I forgot one, the time I finally talked again. To some girl who I trusted enough to talk to twenty minutes after meeting her. Maybe I was just confusing myself. But I wasn't, I didn't see my life flash before my eyes. And something else, I felt myself breathing heavily again, screaming crying, and hugging the girl, though I can't be sure she even helped me. I guess this means me, Chloe Mockitis, is still living in District Eight.

Thalia could feel the cold tears dripping down her cheeks, the feeling of loss and terror running through her. The images of her mother being killed flashed before her eyes as she stared at the limp form of Chloe. She sunk to her knees, clenching her fists in the snow.

'I could've stopped her from eating them... It's all my fault" she thought over and over again. What would she tell this girl's family? What would the Peacekeepers do to her now that they knew she had been sneaking into the forrest? The thoughts flashed through her head, sending a whole new wave of tears to overcome her.

Her silent crying echoed around her, slowing once she heard something. The sound of fast breathing, but not just Thalia's. Thalia's eyes darted to Chloe's face to see her eyes open... breathing. 'Breathing...' she thought slowly, her mind taking forever to process what she was seeing before her.

'She's alive!' Thalia finally thought in shock, her hands finding Chloe's cold ones. "Chloe can you hear me?!" she asked quickly as she heard Chloe crying. She most definatly still needed to bring Chloe to someone, incase the berries were still spreading poison through her.

Thalia quickly looked around the empty streets, wondering why out of all days, no one seemed to be out. Her golden eyes glinted with new hope, slightly replacing the grief and fright. Whatever lay in store for her, she still needed to help Chloe. She stared back down, waiting for her response.
