The Untouchables
Long ago (and by long ago I mean about ten years or so), there was a very strong gang called the Untouchables. Led by the Gould brothers, they boasted of being unstoppable, of being made up of the best of the best. Like arrogant children, like a supernova, they made their presence known only the flashiest of ways. They fought their rival gang, the Prestige, in bloody battles that destroyed blocks of city shops. They robbed banks and built bombs and terrorized the people of District One.
And then the beginning of the end began.
You see, it wasn't always just the Untouchables and the Prestige. Before that, there was one very large gang that had a sort of monopoly on crime. What it's first name was is neither known nor important, but by the time it was making pains in the sides of the Untouchables, it was called Fringe. Fringe, because it was the smallest and the weakest gang, the gang that was unknown and unthought of.
That changed.
Soon, Fringe and it's leaders, the three Lawson sisters, became strong enough for the Goulds to take notice. Alex Gould hired an assassin to attack the leader, the eldest sister, Juliet. She succeeded. And what followed was a bloody feud that would shatter families, destroy lives, and cost vast amounts of money.
But, of course, before I get into that, I think I should introduce myself.
Donovan Gould Jr at your service.
I was born in the gang, you see. And I became an official member around the time that the choice to kill Juliet Lawson blew up in my uncle Alex's face. My parents were Donovan Gould, middle child and resident brainiac of the gang, and Mittens Lyon, the strange mother hen. The marriage, just in case you were wondering, ended in utter disaster, rather like this whole story. They got a divorce, and my twin sister and I were separated; I went with my mother and my twin went with Donovan. Why did I go with Mom?
Because my father's an ass, that's why.
Anyway, what goes around comes around, and that saying was never more true than with our family. Because when I was seventeen, the same assassin that my uncle, Alex Gould, hired to kill Juliet Lawson, was hired by Anna Lawson to kill my uncle. And again, the assassin succeeded.
Long story short, the Untouchables fell apart. My uncle Dante and my father Donovan tried to rally the troops, but it didn't work. The Untouchables drifted to different gangs or jobs. Some, like my uncle Dante, got arrested and thrown into prison. Others, like my mother, went legitimate. Most just disappeared. I don't know whether they're dead or just avoiding the Gould family, and I don't care. Yesterday was yesterday.
But today is today.
We're in a very auspicious (that means favorable, for those of you with... limited vocabulary) place. The slums still remember the names "Gould" and "Untouchables", but the law enforcement and the rich have forgotten. To them, we're a dead power, and what better time to be reborn?
So this is my message. Sent out to all the criminals and thieves, all the bored teens and hopeless adults, all the men and women who are willing to misbehave in our lovely, glittering District One.
Join us.
- Donovan Gould II
