let the world know we're alive ,
and here to chase the flashing light--just wait and see.
and here to chase the flashing light--just wait and see.
A squeel pierced the afternoon air followed by a loud thud and successive quieter ones. "Oh no! Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear." Emery's brown eyes looked up from the dirt she was now laying face-down in. There was a small smear of the mud on her nose and another streak across her forehead, like some ancient African tribal makeup. Her legs were pocketed with the pebble and from the burning on her left elbow she was sure she had a minor scrape. But it wasn't any of this that had the twenty-three year old worried. Actually, it was the apples scattered around her in the market square.
Just as quickly as she had fallen, Emery Carlisle was back on her feet, running after the rolling fruit. She would pick one up, toss it in the basket she left where she had fallen before pursuing another. The fruit were bruised, she had noticed. MeMe, the old slightly crazy woman who took care of her would notice as well, but probably not say anything. This usually happened when Em was sent on these sorts of errands--or any errands for that matter. She would return with either damaged goods or a damaged self.
Emery helped MeMe run her fruit stall. Usually by setting up shop and then trying to persuade customers to buy the produce. Em thought of herself as a pretty good saleswoman, and couldn't help but wonder what her parents would think if they saw her now. No way would they ever have kept her locked up if they could see just how well she could talk to people. What Emery didn't notice was how when she was blabbering away with customers, they would so often slip an apple or orange into their bags. It was safe to say the stall lost as much money as it earned because of her.
"You! Come back here," she called out to one apple which was still rolling down the road. Eventually, she was able to catch up to it and grabbed it quickly, smiling to herself. Hah, that stupid apple, it couldn't outrun her! Feeling rather accomplished, she turned to head back towards her basket before noticing it was gone. Emery started to panic as her head jerked around every direction trying to see if she had misplaced it. "Oh no, oh no, oh no." She began her usual mantra again. Good thing her parents couldn't see her now.
