In the morning it comes
Heaven sent a hurricane.
I didn't realize it at first, what with my happiness at getting to eat apple pie, but these people are pretty much crazy. Letting us eat half an apple pie without stopping us? Shooting us with darts to make us fall asleep so they can drag us off somewhere? And then they flash our names- with pictures- up on this big board. Where did they even get that picture of me anyways? From the dress I'm wearing in the picture, I'd guess it was taken at the last Reaping, though I have no memory of getting my picture taken that day. As if all of this wasn't strange enough already, they tell us that if we don't catch anything, we die. Maybe I wasn't looking close enough, but I swear that flyer didn't say anything about dying.
I can't die here. I won't let myself. I entered this contest so I could win it, not so my blood could stain this dirt. It's always been my plan to die in the Hunger Games. And that's only after I finish everything on my list. I'd much rather die because I'm ready to than because "fate" or whatever decides it's time for me to go.
After I walk through the door with my name on it, bow in hand, a quiver of arrows on my back, I find myself in the deep forest. So I guess now I'm supposed to hunt down some little critter. Okay, well it can't be that hard. I've never done this before, but it can't be too hard, right? I mean, my whole district used to this once upon a time. I start walking around, sure I'll spot some small animal if I just keep walking. After about ten minutes of seeing nothing, I realize that I'm actually really noisy. Which shouldn't surprise, but somehow it does. So I plop down on the ground, leaning up against a tree.
The ground is slightly damp, and I already know that my butt will be wet when I stand up. At least there's no one around to make fun of me. I try to ignore the wetness and tune in to the sounds around me. There's a slight rustle as the wind shifts the trees, and the occasional snap of a twig as something steps on it, echoing from far away. But I don't see any animals. Maybe there aren't any. Maybe they purposely put me in an area with no animals because they wanted to kill me. Or maybe-
I shake my head. They're screwing with my head already. There has to be an animal around here somewhere. It's a god-damned Beastmaster contest. There has to be something around here to can kill.
Then I hear something. Movent in the brush. Now, my hearing isn't the best, but I swear, I did hear something. Slowly, I raise my bow, preparing myself if an animal shows itself. More rustles, and then, suddenly, a fluffy little bunny pops out of nowhere. Aww, how cute! But I have to ignore its cuteness right now. The point is to kill. I pull back on my arrow and try to aim, though I'm not exactly sure if I'm doing it right. Then I let go.
[dice=200+4000]
[Miss (arrow broken) -- 0.0 damage]
The bowstring whaks against my arm aa the arrow snaps in half and falls uselesssly at my feet. I blame it on the cuteness.Not a trace of the sun
But I don't even run from rain.
