Age: 16
Gender: Female
District/Area: District 8
Appearance:
With an above average height 5 feet 5 inches and an petite weight and a frail bone structure, Ember has the capacity endure the hardest of times. That’s even truer seeing as she came from District 8, a lower income district. Her hair is dark, warm brown, thick, sleek, and long, coming to about the bottom of her chest. Typically, it’s worn simply down or in braids that keep it out of her face. Similarly, her eyes are the same dark brown; deep, determined, and knowing. Under her eyes, are bags from the hard work she puts forth and the limited amount of sleep she gets. Ember’s jaw is very square, boxy even, giving her face a full look, which makes her appear more nourished than she actually is.Personality:
Her smile isn’t seen often because of the life she has in District 8 but when she does smile, it’s a smirk that usually has an air of sarcasm to it. She has olive skin that compliments her dark hair and eyes perfectly. A scar above the inside of her right eye brow is partially visible from being hit for not working fast enough in the textile factory when she was seven. It looks more like a dent now but it’s still noticeable to an extent. Though she is skinny, she has thick bones that give her a less than feminine stature. Her curves are more jagged and bony than dainty and girly looking. If she really tried, she could probably be very beautiful but she doesn’t have the time, money, or concern for her appearance to look nice so she just looks plain, even a bit ragged. Though she works making clothes, she can never afford to cloth or groom herself properly and just wears her mother’s clothes from when she was a teenager.
Ember has two personalities to be quite honest. One personality is her true personality, the one that is what goes on in her head. The other is how she behaves in front of others. It’s important for her to have two separate personalities because if she acted the way she truly was, she and her family could get into loads of trouble with the Peacekeepers. She’s a very opinionated girl with a lot of thoughts and convictions. Even when she was very young she always had a lot to say and had a way of getting extremely fired up about things that would bother her. Her mouth would get her into trouble when she was young and she had to learn how to sensor her thoughts because they weren’t always nice and were always honest. She even got hit by a factory manager when she was little for not working fast enough and then yelling back at the manager when he got her angry. The scar still sits right above her right eyebrow. Often, she would have outbursts in class, at her parents and siblings, and even in public when she would get angry. She would smart mouth or just yell but she learned to sensor that after getting hit. Her parents couldn’t afford for that to happen with the Peacekeepers. They knew it would mean execution. For lack of an outlet to channel her temper, she usually would attempt to get solitude and get lost in a book.History:
Her temper stemmed from a few things. One being her intelligence. Ember has always been a bright girl, doing the best in class and understanding things much too old for her to understand. Even though her life isn’t as bad as those in the Districts 10-12, she knows how awful and corrupt the government is. It is very clear to her, even her parents didn’t have to bring that to her attention. Well, yes, it’s obvious to everyone but she can see past what others can’t and builds resentment towards the corrupt government that she struggles to contain on a daily basis. Another reason for her temper is the fire burning inside her. She was named Ember for a reason and definitely lived up to it. When her mother was giving birth to her, she spent half a week in labor and when she was finally born, she was screaming at the top of her lungs for a month straight at least. Her parents said that she always had such a spirit, such a fire in her, that it was only appropriate. Her moral compass is very high, making her passionate and compassionate. Those are two characteristics that can be very big weaknesses in her world and especially the Games if she gets chosen at the Reaping.
Her positive traits are her obedience, selflessness, honesty, passion, compassion, determination, strength, loyalty, logic, wit, and being hard working. Negative traits include defiance, temper, sarcasm, cynical perspective, rude behavior, easy frustration, lack of social skills, hot-headedness and lack of patience. Though, depending on the situation, some of the positives can easily become flaws in character and vice versa. Her obedience is only willingly with her parents because it’s to help them and chores are necessary and her obedience to authorities is unwilling but still present to make life easier on everyone. She is selfless when it comes to helping her family, whether cooking, cleaning, taking care of her younger brothers or anything as long as it makes those she cares about’s lives easier. Honesty can come in handy but it can also be brutal and set others off. It takes practice but she’s learned to control it some. Ember is determined by nature. If someone says she can’t, she’ll do anything to prove that she can. That’s her way. She’s like a stallion, wild and riled. Her strength is emotional and even physical to an extent. She doesn’t let people see her emotionally weak, so they don’t think less of her. She views it as a major flaw. She’s loyal to her family and is hard working because that’s something is born into when you live in any of the poorer districts, any of the districts actually to be honest.
She feels great defiance for the Peacekeepers, the Capitol, the factory managers, the teachers, anyone who tries to tell her what to do; except her parents and old siblings typically. If she isn’t careful about how to act, she can lash out with sarcasm that can be hurtful or violence provoking. Seeing things that she sees in her district has left her cynical, in a bitter despair, knowing things won’t every change but refusing to accept it as a normal thing. Rude behavior can also be a side effect to her occasional outbursts if she slips up as well. It isn’t like she doesn’t have friends but she has no particular best friends because she prefers solitude. Sure, there are people she spends time with in school and in her minimal spare time but she hasn’t opened up to them or gotten particularly close. It’s odd to get close to others beside her family for her. It’s almost unnatural. To her, her private thoughts and feelings are her own and no one should invade them.
Ember Isidora Hilbrook was born on an uncomfortably hot night in early August. Her mother, Amethyst, had been in labor for the better part of four days, going soon on five and was absolutely exhausted. It took two healers to bring the process along and finally the Hilbrook family had their first baby girl. Cayne and Amethyst already had two sons, Gram and Lennor, who were three and and one at the time of her birth. When she was born she screamed her lungs out and didn’t until she was six months old. She was plagued awfully with colic and was quite temperamental. Healers say babies usually grow out of it, but not Ember. She stayed difficult and never changed. After Ember, came two more boys, Kaniel and Ardon, who were four years younger and six years younger than her. So, there Ember was, a hot-headed girl stuck as the middle child with four brothers who were anything but tame and mild-mannered.Codeword: ODAIR
She grew up doing a lot of housework, like cooking and cleaning, as well as assisting her mother in the textile factory, and doing the best in her class at school. If she wasn’t working or taking care of her two younger brothers, she would be reading somewhere. Her two brothers began working in the cotton field with her father once they were old enough to know how, which was still awfully young. Ember was a testy child, reckless, carefree, and had a quick temper. There was definitely a spirit to her; one that said she would fight everything she could, whether it was why she got a question wrong on a test, why she had to go to bed, or even death itself if it ever tried to take her. Afterall, her name fit her perfectly. Ember is the affects of a fire, and she definitely had a flame in her, even before she was born that was apparent; taking her sweet time to be born, kicking violent in her mother’s stomach, and fighting stubbornly against coming into the world. Perhaps she knew of how misfortunate the world was. Her middle name meant ‘gifted with many ideas’ and that was proven to be true too and in so many ways. Her mind was constantly working, whether it was excelling at school, reading whatever she could get her hands on, being witty with her words, logical and street smart when necessary.
Sometimes her intelligence got her into trouble. At the age of seven, she worked at the textile factory with her mother. One day the supervisor became angry with her and she wasn’t at loss for words. Smarting off to the supervisor got her a lash to the face and she still has a dent-like scar above her right eyebrow to show for it. It was then that her parents told her that she must be more careful with her words and anger so she wouldn’t get herself or her family into any trouble. If a Peacekeeper was the one she mouthed off to, she would surely be shot. Since then, she worked tirelessly to sensor her emotions and words. Her bond with her mother was always close because of all the time they spent making textiles together. Her poppa and she were friendly enough but she was never as close to him as she was to her mother. It was often that she didn’t see her father since he worked most of the day in the cotton field. Her brothers were always close with her. She could handle a lot physically with all the rough housing she faced in her lifetime with two older brothers and two younger ones. All the times they fought over simple things, she became a fair wrestler and was eventually able to take her oldest brother, Gram, at one point.
Friendships were never Ember’s strong suit. She was awful at keeping friends but not terrible at making them. All of her friends were just casual ones that she would eat lunch with and maybe spend a Saturday with if there was something special going on but usually she preferred to keep to herself. Best friendship didn’t interest her. She didn’t want to spill her secrets, fears, dreams, and emotions to someone and then have to live with them knowing it and having power over her, even though they probably wouldn’t ever do that, she didn’t want to bother. Besides, she enjoyed solitude too much to have it disturbed. Her family and books were enough true company. She never thought about having a boy friend. Sure it was fine to dream and read about it in books but that was different and she felt that she didn’t need anyone but maybe one day those plans will change for her. For now, she has her parents, brothers, books, and her job at the textile factory to occupy her time.
