Age: 17
Gender: Male
District/Area: District 10
Appearance:
Fabian stands at about 6 foot 1, and is not only the tallest member of his family, but the strongest. His skin is tanned, and in some areas flecked with sunspots from hours of labor beneath the sun. His hair is brown and cropped just beneath his ear lobes. His locks naturally maintain a straight shape and curl gently at the ends, but his hair is rarely styled and normally remains sloppy and unruly during the day. Fabian rarely bothers to wash or comb his hair, giving it a wild type of appearance. His bangs dangle just above his bushy eyebrows, an advantage used to keep sunlight out of his eyes.
Fabian has a medium sized nose that is just a tad bit longer than he wishes. The same can be said about his neck. He has a firm, angled jaw line and a set of plump, pink lips. His eyes are a forest green color and as a result of overworking himself, bags can usually be spotted beneath them. His body is strong and his muscles are somewhat toned, but he sometimes struggles to keep up with his body weight because of food shortages. His hands are large and his fingernails worn down by the work he has performed over the years.
Fabian’s clothes have been abused as time passed. He wears the same raggedy shirts and tattered jeans, and sometimes does not even bother to wear shoes outdoors. The shortage of money forces him to wear the same clothes, most of which he donated to his younger brothers as they grew older. Not all of his shirts are ruined and hideous, but the majority of them are. He occasionally receives new clothes as birthday gifts.
[/blockquote]Personality:
Fabian is considered a workaholic by every member of his family. Although the work can be distributed equally among all of his siblings, Fabian chooses to pick up any slack in fear of not meeting the District’s needs. His determination and self discipline and very powerful, and such traits allow him to complete more work in shorter amounts of time. This overload of work, however, normally results in exhaustion. He may be an excellent source of labor but he is stubborn when it comes to his own well being. He often overworks himself and refuses to stop until he is satisfied, even skipping sleep in the process. When this happens, Fabian can become irritable.[/blockquote]History:
When he isn’t busy working, he is focused on worrying about his family’s conditions. Fabian is a pessimist, always concentrating on the consequences rather than the rewards. He has many siblings to supervise and take care of, and the death of one of them caused him to change into the guilty, concerned boy he is today. He often worries himself into distress, preventing himself from sleeping at night. He has little to no time to relax, so he spends his hours either working or stressing out about how he is going to take care of his family.
Like many other residents, Fabian does not enjoy watching the Hunger Games. It serves as a sick method of delaying him from completing his work. He never truly watches the Games when it airs on television. Instead, he stares off into space and contemplates other subjects that have real importance to him. Gruesome deaths only remind him of his dead brother, not to mention the fact that The Capitol still holds enough power to kill anybody at will for the simplest reasons. If one of his younger siblings were to be reaped, however, he would volunteer to replace them in a heartbeat. Fabian is very overprotective of the people he cares about.
While he may be preoccupied by stress, work, and school, Fabian is genuinely a respectful and compassionate boy. He has personal morals and values that he strives to live up to. He treats everybody the way they should be treated, respects his elders, and is very dependable. Anybody with a problem can trust Fabian to help them solve it without a single complaint. As much as Fabian dislikes the workload he places upon himself, he enjoys helping other people, especially his younger siblings. They are his world.
Fabian is the oldest of eight children-- Three brothers and four sisters. His brothers are ages fourteen, thirteen, and nine, and his sisters are ages twelve, twelve, eleven, and eight. The eight of them live with both of their parents on a farm inside of an old, beaten down house with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and one basement. Fabian and the second oldest son, Florence, occupy the basement, while the others share two other rooms. Each bedroom, excluding the basement, only holds one mattress, forcing the siblings to take turns sleeping on the floor. In Fabian’s case there is only one mattress, and he rarely uses it for himself.
In the Ruins household, Fabian started working when he was only a child. His father developed a limp in one of his legs, leaving him incapable of hard labor, and this ultimately left his wife and eight children to fend for themselves. Fabian’s mother deals with house work and official business. Cleaning, cooking, selling animals, and breeding animals are the tasks assigned to her. Fabian was forced to face the tasks his father previously completed, and this involved dividing the labor amongst the other children. This newfound responsibility still leaves Fabian distressed today, but he is rarely seen having emotional breakdowns. He swallows his stress and sweats it out during his labor. Weakening himself would only slow him down.
Fabian was originally born with four sisters and four brothers. However, on the day of the reaping during Fabian’s eleventh year, that number diminished by one. One of Fabian’s beloved neighbors, who was his brother Felix’s best friend, was reaped that day. Felix was twelve years old at the time and did not react well to the situation. He burst into hysterics and cursed the Capitol and its Games. He tried to shove his way through the crowd to retrieve his best friend, but after his actions, the PeaceKeepers wouldn’t have it. He was gunned down on the spot. Whether the PeaceKeepers were allowed to do such a thing, Fabian did not know. He only remembers the emotional storm the came after. The crying, the screaming, and his world shattering.
Fabian turned increasingly guilty after the event. He feels that he is cursed with horrible luck. His family’s conditions, their food shortage, their misery--It is all the result of the curse. If Fabian could lift this curse, he would, and he tries to do so by working as much as possible. He believes that if he proves himself worthy, the curse will be lifted and their luck will turn around.
There are few moments of happiness shared between the siblings. Whenever Fabian is forced by his siblings to use his spare time for relaxation, he often wanders around the District or lays in the fields at night, observing the stars above. This is what he considers peaceful. He daydreams of freedom and riches, sometimes wishing that he could just run away and travel the planet with his brothers and sisters. Thoughts of living outside District ten fascinates him. And when he isn’t dreaming of the impossible, he is taking a dip in the nearby pond, enjoying the cold water against his hot skin. Occasionally he will take his siblings to the pond also, where they will spend their limited free time together, playing and laughing. "If only the laughter could last forever."
