Appearance:
On the outside, Raegan has always attempted to hold the “tough guy” look. Despite only being 16 years old, and therefore puny in most people's standards, he has always viewed himself as the bad boy...well as bad as you can get, living in a district devoted to lumber! From the head down, Rae secretes pure testosterone. His red hair is sloppy from neglect and overuse, caused by the many hours spent chopping wood, hauling boxes, and spending more time working than any young lad should ever spend. The long hours in the sun caused his already pale skin to freckle, but it works to his advantage, giving others the allusion that he is actually quite tan.Personality:
Rae still hasn't completely grown into his looks. They say he'll be taller, and even stronger than he is now, once he grows up a bit. At 5'8”, his height pales in comparison to his two brothers, 6'3” and 6'5”, respectively. I guess you could say he has sort of a stocky build, at the moment. His arms and legs are strong, as he prefers to spend almost all of his time outdoors, whether it is to work, to play, or to chase girls, being strong has its benefits.
The one thing that betrays any layer of the allusion Rae so determinedly created, is his soft, warm hearted eyes. They always seem to sparkle with a hidden sensitivity, clearly contradicting his outer shell, and betraying his true heart. Yet Rae would never admit to having any sort of soft feelings, and so often does he scowl, or speak gruffly, in order to hide the inner workings of his mind.
As the youngest of three siblings, Rae has always been a little overshadowed by his brother's accomplishments. Both are successful, young lads within the community of District 7, and Rae has always had to work twice as hard to hold a penny to them. Although he is naturally shy, sweet, and reclusive, his jealously for their accomplishments always beat his natural tendencies. Perhaps it is simply because they are so boastful of the woman they bring home, the riches they have made (although, these riches were never exactly presented in monetary value), and their successful avoidance of the Hunger Games. Of course, these boastings were a bit misled, as one could only avoid the Hunger Games through pure luck, but Rae never could see pass their shallow, first layer.History:
Although Rae is surprisingly smart, one wouldn't realize it just by looking at him. His inner dialogue is near constant, analyzing each situation, making connections to past events, and alluding to future actions, but Rae is way too prideful to ever acknowledge his hidden talents. Perhaps it was just being raised in such a manly environment, or the weakness he sees in his mother, who is probably the closest one to his actual personality in the house. He had always been picked on by the tough older brothers, especially when he didn't know how to control his emotions. As he grew older, he knew enough was enough, and he began to fight back.
Nowadays, one would find him to either have a tough man's scowl plastered on his otherwise handsome face, which he pulled out to scare off lesser opponents, such as non wood-chopping boys, or “nerds”. Or he would have the largest, stupidest grin, put there just so he could remind himself that he was actually human. It isn't easy being tough when one is so soft-hearted, sometimes you just have to convey outward happiness. These grins are often accompanied by lame, hurtful jokes.
It would take a lot for Rae to open up to the outside world. Oftentimes, late at night, he can be found sitting in some clearing at the edge of the woods, a sandwich in his hand, and a thoughtful expression on his face. It was the only way he could stay sane, through thoughtful reflection. Of course, if anyone ever discovered this secret habit of his, he'd probably question their own motives for wandering around at night, then use whatever those may be against them. Sometimes his mind just led him to be a master of manipulation, but he always regretted these exchanges afterwords. His heart didn't want to hurt people, his pride did.
Rae was born and raised in District Seven by Cathy and Nolan Harold. Cathy, the daughter of a factory owner and an architect. Nolan? Well he was born and raised in the lumber industry, his father chopped wood, and his father's father chopped it as well. Nolan had essentially grown up as a lumberjack, and wasted no time in teaching his sons, Findlay, Neil, and Raegan, how to be real men. Findlay and Neil took after their father, and sucked these lessons up joyfully. Raegan, on the other hand, struggled a bit more.Codeword: oDair
He had inherited the softer personality of his quiet mother, who used to spend hours drawing on stolen paper from her father's factory. It had always been her dream to be an artist, but District 7 never really called for such a fate, and her submissive personality only yearned to please others. Nolan found that she was beautiful, and made it his conquest to marry her. She only wanted to make him and her family happy, so she fell into the union with as much grace as she could muster. Still, there was always a little bit of resentment in there, but it was never prevalent due to Nolan's mastery of dominance.
Rae always wanted to be like his brothers, and struggled to fight his sensitive, womanly side for the longest time. When they succeeded, he vowed to accomplish twice as much as they had. When they were able to woo many innocent girls into their beds, he chased twice as many. His father always told him, “You'll never be as successful as your brothers, you're too weak.”, so Rae fought his way to the top, tooth and nail. He is in quite a comfortable place, outwardly winning his father and brother's respect, and well on the way to a throne as alpha male. But Rae can't help but wonder what would have happened if he dismissed their bait, and proceeded the path his heart so willfully desired.
If you asked him, he probably would have answered, “I'd be damned if I ever fell into the shoes of a woman. You must be a weakling just for bringing it up. Maybe you should go work in the factories alongside them, you don't deserve to chop wood with the rest of us!” But nobody dared to ask him, and Rae 'happily' stayed where he was. He would be more powerful and successful than the rest of them combined!
