In a way Wolfy felt relief when her name wasn't drawn. But she also began to not feel anything. She had pretty much known for days that her name would be the one to be drawn but yet here she was and some other girl had been chosen. Joseph ran up to her and threw his arms around her happy to have his big sister but Wolfy was numb.
Why didn't I volunteer? Wolfy suddenly thought. A wave of horror washed over her and she barely noticed when Joseph let go of her and grabbed onto her father instead.
Her father mentioned something about seeing her at the house later and Wolfy just nodded. Her red curls made it seem like it was a much bigger nod then what it was. In a blink of an eye it appeared the crowd had disappeared to return to their homes to celebrate or to go way goodbye to the ones they loved.
Wolfy sank to her knees in the dust not caring about possibly ruining her dress. Her beautiful hair that she had inherited from her mother gently fluttered in the breeze around her face. Then suddenly tears leaked out and ran down her face. Why was she upset about not being reaped? She should feel joy. But Wolfy knew in her heart that she was destined to be in the arena and she knew that the sooner she was there then the better for both her and her family.
Joseph needed better food and a place to live that could be kept warm during the cold winter and cool in the summer. Wolfy didn't know what she could do to provide for the little seven year old boy anymore. She couldn't pretend to be like her mother any longer. She wasn't strong like her.
