Mace’s words echoed again throughout the empty sandscape. Julian grit his teeth and pushed himself onward toward the tower in the east as the sun rose from behind it. What does he know about me? Julian thought, glaring at nothing in particular as he walked. I don’t care about these stupid tributes… they’re just pieces in a game! he tried to reassure himself. It’s not wrong. Why else would the Capitol do this if it was wrong? My parents both played… they both won. I have to do the same! These Games are all I’ve ever known, I have to play! Midas may have lost… but…Julian spent another night dozing in and out of sleep in the red sands that filled the majority of the arena. He was exhausted from searching for tributes and prowling around the arena on his broken knee. There was a point where he had seen someone running in the distance, but with his leg as it was, he would never catch them in time. He kicked the sand at his luck again. How could that stupid boy from District 12 possibly do so much damage to this seasoned career? Well that didn’t matter much, that joke of a tribute was dead… dead…. The word seemed to echo around the empty pit that was his heart.
Thirteen tributes were now gone—no, dead—in total. The word dead struck him in an odd way. This wasn’t like the mock Games the careers played at home in District 2. In those, when Julian would rise victorious, everyone was still around to play again another day… but here, that’s not quite how it worked.
He looked down at the bloodstains on his black jumpsuit and briefly wondered whose blood had mixed with his own. Vague faces of tributes who met his glaive flashed before his memory. Don’t make them haunt you, Julian,
I promise I’ll come back to you… Do you think I would ever leave you all alone?
But alone was exactly what Julian was, both in life and now the arena. No alliances, no friends, no one to even have human contact with… He had never spent this much time just sitting within his own conscious and it was driving him mad. Every moment alone made it increasingly harder to keep any emotion locked away in the cages he had so neatly placed them in upon Midas’s death.
His ears perked however at the small splashes created by his footfalls meeting the marsh. He had been so lost in thought that he had entered the eastern tower without realizing it. He was only a few feet in, but once again he found himself in a wet terrain. First the bog and now a marsh. Are all of the towers tiny water worlds? he wondered. Just as he considered heading back to the north tower to find out, something brushed his leg under the shallow water. It was hard to make out just what it was under the red tinted algae, but he could see a hint of fur and was willing to bet it was a riverbat. His right nostril curled in disgust at the large rodent like creature. He had seen them in Games prior, and although they weren’t necessarily the most ferocious mutts he could encounter, he knew they were nasty little things who would be quick to tear into his flesh. Hopefully there was just the one…
