Starr was barely paying attention. She was thinking about making a swinging rope that could swing into the little pond she found in the forest.
Maybe I could tie it to that big old tree, then you could swing right into the deepest end of the pond.
But she didn't think that tree could hold well. It was pretty old, and she couldn't tell if part of it had died yet or not. She would have to test it out.
"Ms. Loxwood? Ms. Loxwood? I hope you're paying attention."
Starr looked up. Ugh, she had been zoning out again. Her mother had urged her not to, but sometimes she just couldn't help it. A lot of the things they talked about in Mr. Cloud's class was extremely boring. Starr just nodded, glad she couldn't speak for once because he probably would have asked her a question. People always stared at her strangely, because she couldn't speak. Most of them thought she was an Avox until they saw her tongue was just fine.
Blushing, Starr began taking notes again. She knew the only two reasons she wasn't made fun of constantly was because she had nice friends, and because she was evidently "pretty", though she herself didn't believe it. Most nerds liked to hit on her, but if they knew better they would know it was totally pointless. She could never find love, because love often invovled speaking. And nobody even tried to communicate with her, except her friends sometimes. Starr didn't mind anymore though, she was just happy people accepted her.
Suddenly, people were rushing out of the classroom.
You just did it again!
Starr facepalmed herself and tried to stay more alert as she packed up her stuff in her worn out, earthy brown backpack and rushed out the classroom doors. As she walked quickly down the hallway, Starr looked around for her friends. She was about to go around the corner when she ran right into someone. She wished she could say sorry, like most people would. She crashed to the cold floor, and tried to scramble up to help the person she'd clumsily ran into.
