The Seam. The place where he was born. The place where he grew up, learned, breathed and lived. Unforgettable, really. His siblings were born here. His parents grew up in this very neighborhood. Living the same life, day after day. They met here, got married here and had a family here. Hopefully, Aidyn one day would be allowed to do the same as his parents did before him. But at the age of seventeen, he wasn't too worried about marriage yet. First he had to work up the courage to carry on a full conversation with a girl, let alone anyone, in order to build some friendships and trust in his life. Things his life lacked dearly. It wasn't that he wasn't good looking, or anti-social, he just didn't care for small talk. He'd rather just get to the point of the conversation and be done. Did people honestly care how he was, or did they just ask because it was a force of habit? The only two people he knew that he cared about how they were doing were his younger siblings. And that was because he treated them as if they were his own children. With their father in the mines most of the time, and their mother just trying to get by, Aidyn had to step in and raise the younger ones most of the time.
Aidyn swooped his sister, Aila, into his arms and kissed her on the forehead. At ten years old, she was still a small child, compared to his muscular frame. 'Be good now, okay?' he cautioned, setting the girl back on the floor. She nodded willingly, and ran off in search of her twin brother, Skylar. Aidyn glanced at his mother, who look ragged and worn down as she cooked dinner for the four of them. Again, his father was in the mines, so he wouldn't be coming home for dinner this week. It wasn't too much of a surprise. Aidyn gave his mother a slight smile, and waved at her as he walked out of the house. She weakly smiled back, and continued to frantically search the home for more food to feed the growing children. It was saddening the way she cooked and cleaned for her family, without actually spending time with them. She ended up as more of a maid for the household, rather than the person who gave birth to the three children. His household was all bent backwards and twisted, but he could handle it. It was the way things had been since the twins were born. Aidyn wouldn't have it any other way.
He shut the door behind him as he left his home, half-jogging to the path that surrounded the Seam. It wasn't much of a neighborhood, but most of the people got along and knew each other, if not by name, by face. He would be the first to admit he didn't know everyone's name, but mostly because he hadn't spoke a word to hardly any of them. Just a few nods 'hello' were all he needed to suffice in District Twelve. People weren't too talkative around here, especially if you looked like you were on a mission. With Aidyn's stern face, and muscular build, most people took it as if he really was in search of something important, so they left him alone most of the time. However, there was always those rare occasions where he ran into someone he barely knew, and could try to carry on a conversation with them, just to figure out who they were. Most of these conversations never lasted long, but long enough for him. And sometimes, he could carry on a conversation for hours, if it was the right person.
Relationships weren't Aidyn's forte. He wasn't one to settle down or get attached to a person, friends or otherwise. He was too afraid of losing them. Aidyn sank down next to an abandoned house, staring around at the neighborhood around him. He barely knew a single person here, even for living in the same place his entire life. It was what he got for not allowing anyone to enter his life. Classmates disappeared every year, and most of the time went unnoticed by the people around him. After the original shock, most of his classmates would forget about the Games, until the news came that the classmate they had sent to fight for them had just lost the bloody battle, never to return home. Unless his classmates had been close to that single person, the tribute would be forgotten, just another name on the list of tragedies to occur more frequently as the Games went on. All for the Capitol's pleasure to make children fight to the death. The winner would win money and fame, without having to worry about anything else, but their selfishness. That tribute was rewarded for the manslaughter her or she had just committed. Did nobody else see the wrongfulness of this?
Aidyn rested his head against the side of the building, staring off towards the milky gray sky. Clouds covered the sun, as a slight amount of snow fell towards the ground. Not a storm, just gentle snowflakes drifting towards the ground, and resting peacefully on the objects attached to the Earth by gravity. His gray eyes wandered around the Seam, watching people walk by to get to where they needed to be. Today, Aidyn just wasn't in a rush. He just wanted to relax. If someone wanted to talk to him, so be it. He really didn't care. All he wanted was to enjoy nature around him, and the beauty the Seam never really showed of itself. The Seam really could be beautiful, but nobody looked at the beauty aspects of the poorer neighborhood. They just noticed the dirt from the mines that surrounded them, and the fine layer of coal that covered everything in District Twelve. Most people noticed the broken buildings in desperate need of repair, with nobody who had the time or money to fix. All of the beauty was just overlooked because most people focused on the negatives.
