Sighing heavily, Alfie slinked further down in his seat. The streets outside were completely deserted. Huh. No wonder. It was the middle of the night. The sky was pitch black, the moon a luminous white circle carved into the distance. Its white beams skimmed the heavily dark pavement and the weak orange glow of the streetlamps managed to make the night just about bearable. But it was freezing. Even in his car, Alfie's skin turned numb with the cold and his breath was visable. He buried himself in his heavy leather jacket, his eyes dropped down to his lap as he read his texts.

Alfie scowled to himself, tossing his phone aside and stuffing his hands into his jeans pockets. Why did Liam have to be so damn crazy? Not that he hadn't always been. As children, Liam wasn't the most mature or sensible of friends. Alfie was often catapulted into his crazy antics that landed them both into piles of trouble. Like the time he pushed Alfie into the fast-paced river outside his home and he ended up nearly drowning. Or the time where he helped Liam rob that Ice cream truck, or steal those test answers, or bust out of detention. It was the same for when they were teenagers. The crazy schemes got even more crazy and even more dangerous, and while Liam could always simply laugh it off Alfie was left with the most trouble after. Alfie was two years his best friend's junior, but often felt like he was ten years older. He was always left to tidy everything up and tug Liam out of trouble. And quite frankly, he was getting sick of it.
He forced himself to relax as he saw the police van turn around the corner and rumble down the road towards his car. He quickly wounded down the window and signalled out. The police van swerved to the side clumsily and parked behind him. He spun around on his chair to look out the back car window. The police door opened and the police officer got out, walked around and opened the back door. And out got Liam. His friend wore a goofily pleasant expression, brown eyes wide and excited, grinning widely. His ruffled mop of brown hair looked even more ruffled than usual and his clothes were stained with some sort of drink. Even his jaw-grown stubble looked more rough than usual. Alfie opened his car door and Liam's face brightened up. He wriggled one hand free of the police officer's grip and waved like mad.
"Alllliiiiiie! Dude am I glad to see you!" Liam exclaimed. He paused, turned around and tossed a glare at the police officer, who frowned at him. Liam edged closer to Alfie and hissed lowly, "That guy sure has issues, m'telling ya somethin."
Alfie sighed and snaked an arm around his friend's shoulder. "Okay, okay, you've clearly had enough. Get into the car now and quit bothering the officer..."
"Not so fast!" The police officer barked. "He's coming down to the station with me. It's time he was dealt with."
Great. Just great. What was Alfie supposed to do now? He opened the back door to his car and bundled a hysterical Liam inside, before slamming the door shut. He turned back to the police officer with a small, sheepish smile. "Look, Dave, can't you just..." He gestured towards his car with a shrug as if it explained everything.
Dave shook his head. It was his time to sigh. "Look, I know he's like a brother to you, Alfie. But the boy's a troublemaker. He's had enough warnings already," He said with slight sympathy. "He has to go to court."
"No! Look, just give him one more chance. I'll fix him up. I swear it won't happen again."
Dave sighed again. His eyes were locked onto the car. He nodded slowly. "Alright then. ONE more chance," He said. Alfie breathed out with relief and Dave chuckled. "Honestly! I don't know how you handle him. Anyway, I have to go. Take care."
Alfie waved Dave goodbye until he had clamoured into his car and had sped away. Then his fists clenched. Anger boiled up inside him. He stormed over to his car, opened the door wide, sat down at the steering wheel and slammed the door hard. The uncontrollable cackling coming from the back of the car only made him grip the steering wheel harder. Liam stopped and sat up, looking around him, bewildered.
"I thought I was in a police car," He stated flatly.
"Maybe that's where you belong." Alfie growled.
That sent Liam off laughing again. It made Alfie cringe with annoyance. "Oooo, Mister dry," Liam teased. He leaned over and flicked Alfie's ear. Alfie snapped his hand away sharply.
"Liam! It's not bloody funny!" He yelled. "You could have been ARRESTED. I had to beg Dave not to damn well arrest you! You're twenty two years old, you're not sixteen! When are you going to grow up and realise that instead of dragging me into everything?"
Liam sat still, blinking, stunned at Alfie's outburst. His eyes were wide with hurt and shame. Alfie scowled, turning away from him and fixing his eyes on the road as he started up the car. It rumbled down the empty streets and turned to the right, then the left. For half of the journey both didn't speak. The cars engine was all that could be heard. Alfie glanced in the mirror once or twice and saw Liam was lying down and looking at the ceiling. He forced himself to feel no pity. Serves him right, he thought. He should be taught a lesson.
Soon enough, he had to hault at a red light. There was an awkward silence. Alfie breathed out heavily.
"I'm sorry," Liam said quietly. So quietly, Alfie barely heard him.
Alfie's gaze dropped to his lap. He sighed again. "I don't want you to get hurt. Or arrested. You're my brother, Liam. My best friend. Oddly enough I care about you. Please, clean yourself up before something happens."
The car was quiet again. Alfie shifted in his seat. He could hear Liam's even breaths behind him. The lights flickered to amber, then green. The last thing Alfie heard before the car charged ahead was:
"I'll try, Alfie. I will. I'll really try."
