There it was again. The faint crackle of dead leaves on the forest floor. Jac crouched silently at the base of a young pine and tilted her head slightly to the right as she listened for the sound. The layer of snow on the ground was throwing her senses off today. She shifted her weight as cautiously as she could, the numbness in her thighs relieved at the sudden reanimation in her legs. Jac had been waiting patiently for nearly an hour now, listening and waiting for the yearling to make its appearance.

She first spotted the mother and son the day after the Reaping. Jac often retreated to the expanse of forest surrounding District 7 to calm herself. Reaping day was no exception. Partially from relief of her name not being called, and partially from sorrow for her fellow citizens chosen. On that day, huddled for warmth and security, Jac stumbled upon the pair. A doe and its spotted fawn had stepped lightly into the clearing. Jac watched them intently from the perch of her forearms, not daring to move from fear they would flee. These two lived without the daunting responsibilities of the Capitol on their shoulders, Jac was jealous and full of admiration all at once.

There was a sharp chill in the wind today and Jac could bear the ache in her body no longer. She muttered curses under her breath while slowly inching herself up the trunk of the tree, using it for support the entire agonizing way up. Her bones felt as if they were frozen in place and her skin was burning from cold all over. Her freckled nose was bright red but her eyes remained their deep stormy blue as always. She pulled at the sleeves of her button up shirt and wiped away the snow and dirt from her back and bottom. With numb hands she retied her brown hiking boots and replaced her knapsack over her shoulders.

Her blonde hair had been fashioned haphazardly in a bun just under her left ear and her flimsy bangs hung between her forehead and eyes. Jac smiled and shrugged her shoulders in reply to the faint chirping of a nearby bird. "Guess he isn't ready to meet his forest sprite today." She spoke aloud, although no one seemed to be around or listening. Jac had spoken with the inhabitants of the forest since she was first able to speak. She and her father worked alongside each other day after day having conversations with flora and fauna. This was where Jac was most happy. A father and a forest was all she needed.

But Jac truly longed for human company and so she began her trek to a clearly marked path. She had wandered a few yards off in search of her fawn, but quickly used her sense of direction to locate the trail once more. Her hands clutched the straps of her pack just above her hip and that effervescent smile returned. Her cracked lips puckered in an attempt to whistle, but no sound came out. She furrowed her eyebrows, licked her lips and tried once more. This time, a distinct and melodious tune burst forth. It was a little louder than she had anticipated, and she giggled at her carelessness. Her feet carried her forward and her song echoed on the quiet forest air. "Bring me someone to play with, forest. Pretty please!" Jac's voice was quiet and gentle as she paused briefly on the trail. She turned her face to the sky, although it was barely visible among the tree tops, and stared longingly there for a moment. The breeze fluttered playfully with the tail of her shirt as Jac waited once more for someone she could share the forest with.

I sit there asleep to the world in my new home and in my new room, alone. I was sick today and unable to work. I was dreaming. In my dream, I saw my mother and Father having there picnic, and then I saw it, I saw the tree fall. I tried to yell, but it was no use, It fell on them, crushing there bodies, The dust floated up in the air, then you see a man about as old as my dad. he is looking at my father and mother and then laughs. The guy then walks torwards me, i try to run, but he is too fast. Its useless, I stop and then i see the man's face, it was my parent's friend, who was my abuse guardian. I see him, he pulls a knife to my throat and is about to hurt me, when I hear voices talking, I didn't know who they were, until I saw some other Lumberjacks, and my ex guardian ran away. I was scared, I ran back home, to find my ex guardian again. he says "Good bye." I scream as the knife was about to hit me and then wham I fell on the floor of my new bedroom with a thud. I was awake, it was just a dream, no it wasn't it was a memory. I hate them, why weren't they arrested, oh wait its because there friends are peacekeepers. I got up off the ground, I feel a bit better. I look for the necklace that my mother and father both had, our family had this necklace for years, It was a sycamore tree, Its where my family had brought me to play, while they worked, it kept me busy. I miss going to that tree. I should go there.

I walk to the shower, in the bathroom, which is across my room's door. I walk into the bathroom. I turn on the shower and I was like melting from the soothing feeling of the water hitting my chest. I got out of the soothing shower into the very cold air, my body shivered at the cold. I wraped the warm towel around me and walked back to my room. I made it and got dressed, in a blue plaid button up shirt and some jeans. I put on my warm shoes, life seemed like it was just starting for me. I went downstairs, I saw no one, oh yeah I was home alone. I grabbed my ax thinking that I may have to cut down a tree, or protect myself. I walk outside, and down the street. I Made it to the edge of the forest. I notice the trees have a certain natural beauty today, they were amazing. The snow tipped the top of every pine needle. The snow falling was beautiful as it hit the top of me. I felt like I was free to the world. I begin to walk slowly into the forest, I was still mesmerized by the snow. It just so magical today. I walk into the forest, I notice all the pines and so many different trees from Birch to Oak. It was just magically. I stop for a second and check my path, I realized that I was going a bit too far, i was lost now. I sat down and thought. I finally just walked back, until I noticed something in the distance. It was a girl, she seemed very elegantly pretty. I walk slowly to her, she seemed to want to find someone new to talk to. So I walk a bit faster. The breeze hit my rather warm face as I walked torwards her. I noticed how her hair blew. It was like a dream, but it wasn't. I finally made it to her and said in a polite manner "Hello, Are you Lost?" I studied her very carefully, she seemed to be wanting a friend, maybe I could be that person. The snow fell slowly as i talked to her, it felt like it was just me and her.

“You can't stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes.”

The sky remained a dull gray of its former self as tiny flakes of white began to fall from the tops of the pines. Jac couldn't tell if it was snowing again or if the branches had just caved under so much pressure and were unleashing their loads elegantly towards the forest floor. Her eyes had begun to water from the cold and the brightness so she blinked tears away and rubbed her eyes with the insides of her index fingers. Then she heard it, distinct but dull footsteps coming quickly from behind her. Jac had been listening for a lot of things in the forest today, but she hadn't expected someone else so soon after her plea. Besides, today wasn't a work day for most of the residents of District 7 and most citizens had shut themselves in with their hot stoves for the day. Who else, she thought, would be that desperate for company or the arms of the forest other than her?

"Hello, are you lost?" The words reached Jac's ears just before she could turn around. Whoever this was, he was fast. Well, Jac assumed it was a he because the voice resonated in deeper more guttural tones than her bright melodious one. In an instant, Jac swiveled on her toes in an graceful semi-circle and came face to face with this stranger. He was tall, much much taller than Jac who only stood at about 5'5". She had to crane her neck backwards in order to look at his face. His eyes were gentle, although his body looked rugged and mangled with scars. He reminded her of a black bear she and her father had encountered years earlier.[/color]

"Jacelyn, watch yourself please." The mesmerizing voice of Mason Foster lingered in Jac's ears. "Come on dad, even I'm more ferocious than this pitiful creature." They were timbering wood to bring back to their home for crafting when it appeared. An elderly black bear, graying with age. It's white gold eyes locked directly into Jac's as she made the final sawing motion on a small cedar. Mason stood a few feet away and hadn't noticed the creature over the noise from their labors. Mason was protective and this instance had scared him to pieces on that day. Jac could remember the urgency in his voice. "Don't move, baby. Are you alright?" Of course she was alright, Jac had been raised in these woods, but Mason's memories were erased at the site of a carnivorous bear. They stared at each other, as if exchanging life stories through their eyes, and Jac noticed how heavily the old thing was breathing. It spread out its massive body and crumpled slowly to the ground before her. Just like that, it died.[/color]

Jac stared at the boy before her, lost in a thought at this triggered memory. The scars on the boy and the scars on the bear were similar on the surface. Just as she had suspected gentleness from that old black bear, she sensed it now in the presence of this new acquaintance."That's usually my line." Jac had such a good sense of direction, it almost seemed an impossibility for her to be lost. This boy couldn't know that though, they had never even met before this moment. Jac brushed away her bangs, which were fighting with the wind, and tucked them firmly behind her ear. She cocked her head to the side before responding.

"I know these forests like the back of my hand." She held out the palm of her hand inches from the boy's face and smiled. "This palm is my map. See this freckle right here? That's where the old sycamore is. It's just down the path here. I think that's where I was headed, but I don't really know. I actually came here looking for my fawn, but there's too much snow and I'm impatient." Jac's words spilled forth like an overflowing mug of warm liquid. They were sweet, genuine, and had a hint of starvation in them. Jac loved being in the company of others, but her work prevented her from much play. This boy was the first human interaction, other than her father, that she had felt in days. She prattled on. "Anywho, I'm Jacelyn. Everyone calls me Jac though, just Jac. My father and I own the best carpentry business in the district."

Jac's face was warm with satisfaction, although her nose was still quite red from the weather. She lowered her arm and took a step backwards, almost slipping on the newly formed ice. She let out a small gasp and threw out her hand for something to balance on. Luckily Jac avoided falling by performing a clumsy skip sideways and resting her right arm on a nearby tree trunk. She tried to make this seem natural and cocked her left foot to rest on her inner right calf as well, although she blushed a little out of embarrassment. Jac pulled her fist up to her lips and snapped her thumb between her index finger. "So, who might you be and what are doing here anyway?" Jac raised her eyebrows in an inquisitive manner and awaited the towering figure's response.[/left][/color][/size]

Running swiftly, Jackson was once again scouring the forest for suitable trees to bring for the company. As he ran, his hate for the Capitol and the games, and everything that was his life kind of was on his mind more and more. However, Jackson knew that the more wood he got, the better his life was. Shaking his head, Jackson paused in a patch of soft, green grass, and listened to the woods carefully. He heard the birds and the wind through the dry, crackling leaves of the trees…and a girl’s voice! There was someone else here…and he wasn’t alone. Jackson hit the ground, his green and brown clothing melting into the scenery, so that if it was a Capitolite, they wouldn’t notice him until Jackson was upon her. But then, he realized…it was a girl! She was really pretty, and Jackson suddenly saw himself with her…Warding off those thoughts, Jackson stood, brushed himself off, and walked towards her.
It was only as he stalked closer that he realized there was another guy next to the blonde girl. Crossing his arms over his chest, Jackson edged forward, the tips of his black boots crunching quietly through the leaves. “Well…didn’t expect to find anyone here...” he trailed off quietly, as the girl was speaking to the guy about her hand being a map of the forest. Grinning slightly, Jackson muttered, “You know, the trees here…they whisper when the wind blows, trying to tell you secrets of days gone by…so, what are you two doing here? Usually, the forest is quieter than the land of the dead…I’m Jackson, by the way,” he added, not really knowing what to say to these two. The girl, being awfully pretty, and the guy, being rather quiet and serene, didn’t seem like the type to go about the forest in the middle of the day.[/font][/size]

David looked at the girl, she was much shorter than he was. He wouldn't tell her that she was short because he was taught manners at a very young age, it was until his abusive guardians came into his life that he had lost his manners, but now that they are back, since he broke free from his guardians rein of terror. David was always the nice kid, that was brave enough to do anything, but once his guardians came they ruined him, they forced him to call other people that the guardians had pissed off, they forced him to do well everything. David hadn't got the social skills he needed. He hadn't had a friend ever since talliah. David came back to reality. He said "Oh the Sycamore, I was just heading there, did you know that is one of my family's special places, when I was a kid, they would allow me to play there while they worked." I smiled and said "I am David Ed Hank." David stuck his hand out for her to shake. He stood over her. she wasn't lost like David thought, she was like a fairy in a magical forest, she knew where she was going every second o f the day. She was very pretty though, her blonde hair that she put behind her ear. Then David heard someone. he looked and noticed a guy. he had walked up to them, not knowing what to do. The kid seemed flawless, he just broke into conversation. David put on a fake smile. David didn't like this guy. david said "So do you guys wanna go to the old sycamore?" David wanted to go really bad, he hasn't been there forever. david put his hand through his hair, it seemed soft today. It felt like cotton for some reason. David was having an ok day, it wasn't the best, but it wasn't the worst. He still felt a bit sick, but he seemed to be doing fine.

Jacelyn pushed herself ever so gently off the tree's sturdy trunk. She tucked her hands in her jean pockets and listened as David introduced himself. Then out of nowhere came another guy. Was it Jac's lucky day, or what? She tilted her gaze around David to listen as this new fellow questioned them as well. Why was everyone so concerned about wandering in the woods today? Jac was used this solitude and spent most of her time meandering these woods. David and Jackson, two fine young men of district 7 as far as Jac was concerned. The wind got a hold of Jacelyn's wavy bangs and blew them violently into her blue eyes. She pushed out her bottom lip and blew fiercely in aggravation. The day was edging on and with it the weather was getting colder. Jac shivered and tried to tuck her hands further into her pockets for warmth.

"First off, nice to meet you David. Secondly Jackson, this forest should never be compared to the land of the dead. It's teeming with life! You just have to listen, like you said. The trees aren't the only things that like to talk. I'm Jacelyn, just call me Jac and this is David." She winked at David, he must have been taken aback by Jackson's sudden appearance and forgotten to introduce himself. It seemed a stretch for David to even speak to Jac, and she wanted both boys to feel comfortable. They were a perfectly unfamiliar trio, and that was just how Jac liked it. Her impish smile played across her face and the freckles on her nose stood out among the crinkles. Jac was so easy going with people because she loved company so much. These new found acquaintances had made her heart leap for joy and she would not waste an opportunity for adventure.

"I'd love for you both to escort me to the sycamore. Maybe we'll see my fawn there! Plus, I promised my dad I'd bring back some freshly stripped wood for our store. I promise I'll make it worth your while. I'm the second best carpenter in district 7, I'll make you both something if you'll walk with me. You will walk with me, won't you?" Jacelyn removed her hands from her pockets and playfully linked one arm with David and the other with Jackson. She turned her head left and right, pleading equally with both of them. Her eyes were wide and filled with longing. She had learned to do this from her experience with Mason, her father. He had once said that no boy can resist a forest sprite's stare. Jac tried to suppress the shivers that were creeping up her spine. She was quite cold from standing still for such a long period of time. Normally she was much more active on her days alone in the forest. These two were slowing her down, but she would gladly brave the cold for a decent conversation.

"Jacelyn, don't push down so firmly on the branch. Let it flow through your fingers and your blade." Jac was remembering one of her earliest experiences learning her trade from her father. She was 11 and it was her first attempt at carving a lute. Her father played the lute frequently and she had asked him to teach her, but he decided to morph the opportunity into a carpentry lesson. She had fumbled aimlessly with the wood all day, but the delicate branches kept breaking. She was frustrated and tired but refused to stop. She was determined to impress her father. "Alright dad, like this?" She gently stroked the wood and let it slide smoothly against her blade. To her joy, the wood didn't split or make a terrible cracking noise as before. She looked up to her father for approval. "Thatta girl, Jac. You've got it now." She erupted in laughter and leaped into her father's arms. Her forceful tackle barely made an impact on the broad muscled man and he laughed gruffly in response. "See, you just have to be patient."

Jac had always had trouble with patience, but it had matured in her over her years in district 7. She now stood patiently between the boys, still linked to them by her tiny arms and continued to shiver slightly as the wind picked up behind them. "But if we're going to go, we should be on our way. It's only going to get colder if we wait and you two are on your own when it gets dark, and let's face it... You might need me around to make it back home." Jac raised her eyebrows as she teased the boys, her bangs still resting messily across one of her eyes. She tried to stay still, but lifted her heels up and down out of habit and her antsy state. Jac was ready to get moving and hoped she'd have some companions to go along with her. Besides, she sort of enjoyed showing off her talents and was eager to get to that sycamore in time to strip some of its bark. Her eyes continued to shift from boy to boy as she waited for a response.

Smiling slightly at David, Jackson nodded, muttering, “Nice to meet you,” when really, it looked like the guy wanted to smash him flat in a hunger games competition and then place him in a tree cutting machine. He really hoped that David and the girl weren’t related, because that would just be so sad. Smiling at the girl still, David suddenly asked,”So, anyone want to go to the old sycamore?” “Hey, sounds great,” I replied, flipping my bangs out of my eyes and giving them both a small grin. It seemed like Jaclyn and David had just met as well, and David didn’t seem to friendly all of a sudden.
Stuffing his hands into his pockets, Jackson followed David as he lead the group through the soft and quiet forest, trying to keep close to Jac and not try and make David madder than he already was. Suddenly, Jac was speaking, “This forest is teaming with life, what are you talking about?” Well, she said something like that, not in those exact words. Softly, Jackson replied, ”Well yeah…but I mean, usually, I never see like anyone out here, and…suddenly there’s two other people in the forest…it’s just cool, that’s all,” he added, looking down at Jac as he replied.[/color][/font]

David looked at the surroundings. The trees were marvelous. David smiled at the taller trees, He loved to look straight up at the trees. He missed being able to explore the trees, wait he could now. David smiled at Jackson, he seemed nice, but David couldn't tell by his looks. Usually looks are wron on a person. david smiled at Jac, who had put her arm through his. david noticed here shivering. David broke from the arms and took off his light jacket because thats the heaviest coat he had. He put it on Jac and said "Now you won't freeze." David smiled. David remembered Tahlia when he first meet her. She seemed cold, but happy. David said to Jackson's comment about life in the forest, "Jackson, the forest is alive with many creatures. Lumberjacks usually in here, but they have a free day. There is plenty of birds, including mockingjays. There is Bears, Mice, Snakes, and other animals. There is even some nests of Tracker Jackers. You just have to stop and let Time stand still and listen." David smiled at his remarkable comment. It was suprisingly quieter today, because it was winter. David said "Lets get a move on." David stuck his arm through Jac's arm and lead the way. The old sycamore tree was close by. David could tell. His memories were leading the way. It was a beautiful day to go there, espcially in the snow.

The sky was dark and a crisp wind blew through the valley. The birds were all nestled quietly among the trees and the ground below was equally quiet. The smell of honeysuckle was on the wind and Jac breathed deeply. She stood motionless in front of him. The old sycamore, which had been in district 7 since she could remember, was staring her in the face. She was 8 then and no taller than 4’6”. Jac had always been small and standing before this monstrosity of a tree was not making her feel any larger. It was late and she had wandered away from her father and the path an hour earlier. Now she was lost in the dark, but she wasn’t afraid. In fact, she felt safe beneath this tree. It was as if its branches were acting like arms which embraced her gently in the darkness. Jac smiled and slithered down the base of the sycamore. Her blonde tresses were much curlier back then and she looked like an angel curled in a tiny ball on the ground. She fell asleep that way until her father had found her after a good half hour of searching. He scooped her up in his arms and held her close to his broad chest. He was warm and she was stirred by the sudden change of temperature. She rubbed her eyes gently and looked up. The last image she remembered before fading off was her father’s rugged face looking down at her and the large sycamore branches hovering above them.

Jacelyn’s memories played sweetly in the back of her mind as the trio headed for the old sycamore. Jac squeezed her arms closer to her body, bringing the two boys closer to her. She giggled and had more of a skip in her step as they walked forward. David removed himself from the link and Jac looked up at him in a puzzled manner. Her eyebrows furrowed as he removed his coat. Then he placed it kindly around her shoulders. She happily placed her arms through the sleeves and thanked him with a smile and her bright eyes. The chill in the air had stifled her heat for some time, but now Jac was warmer and her liveliness was returning as well. She listened to the boys as they spoke to her and each other. There seemed to be an air of discontent between the two but Jac couldn’t figure out why. They both seemed like very pleasant men. Jac decided it was her turn to get a few words in.[/size] ”It is strange that we all stumbled upon each other out here. Normally, I don’t meet many people this deep into the forest. I’m glad to have met you both though! It makes my heart happy.” Jac’s face erupted in a warm smile as she looked at both boys for an assurance that they enjoyed her company as well. Sometimes Jac’s personality could come off as overbearing. She tucked her face into her right collar bone because the wind had begun to make her eyes water. Jac inhaled deeply. David’s jacket smelled of burnt pine and sweat. She liked the smell though, it reminded her of home.

”You smell nice, David.” Jac’s words came out before she could really think about them. She blushed a little but decided to play it off in her normal playful manner. She leaned her face over towards Jackson and stuck it just under the nape of his neck. He smelled like timber and metal. Jac thought he must work as a cutter or at the sawmill. She removed her face and grinned.[/size] ”You’re not so bad either, Jackson. You know, our names are too close. I’ve never met another boy who I wanted to call Jack. I’m not used to it, but we’ll manage, huh? Maybe we all need nicknames to make it easier.” Jac was filled with energy and giddiness. She looked up and something registered in the back of her memory. The thicket! They were less than a mile away from the old sycamore. She quickly released the boys’ arms and bent down to tie her shoes hurriedly.

Her heart was beating quicker in anticipation. All around her this place screamed of comfort and pleasure. She removed her knapsack and dug through its contents. Finally, she removed a small blade. The handle was decorated with vines and different shaped leaves. It was beautiful. She flipped her pack over her shoulders, threw the blade up high in a rotating motion, and in one elegant maneuver rolled forward and caught it between her thumb and index finger. She sat there, crouched in front of the boys and had an impish thought.[/size] ”Pretty good, eh? So who wants to race me to the sycamore? Ready, steady, GO!” Jac gave them no time to respond and sprinted in the direction of the sycamore. Her dainty figure bounced through the thicket, her blonde hair had fallen out of its bun and now flowed behind her in the wind. She was fast and she knew it, now 60 feet in front of the boys she turned and continued to run awkwardly backwards. She waved and called to them loudly. ”You’re both making this too easy, WIMPS!” She giggled cheerfully and turned back around determined to make it to the tree before they could reach her.[/left]

OOC: You can insert images into a post by using html coding. You just use brackets like these [ ] and write the letter IMG between them. David smiled as Jac smelt his jacket. David had been sweaty in that jacket before and he was a chopper. He was the person he cut down trees with an ax. He also stayed by the trains and factories, so thats where the burnt pine smell probably came from. He always loved his work because of his abusive guardians. David smiled again. he was happy to have friends that could talk to him without being scared about his guardians.

David watched as Jac put her head in the nape of his neck and smelt him. David felt a bit of a rush of jealousy. David clenched his hands, but unclenched. He was no longer under the abusive guardians that he once had. David put on a fake smile. he no longer had to put out his anger on others. This was a great feeling for him. he missed this feeling. he felt free from the weight of the world. He was getting closer to his golden age too. Tomorrow would be his birthday and he would turn eighteen. He was excited for tomorrow.

He looked back up and realized that Jac had wanted to race and already started. David was flabbergasted by this. he ran as fast as he could, he wasn't really meant for speed. He needed to catch up. He caught up to Jac, right about when they reached the tree. David tackled her and they both fumbled into the soft snow. jac had landed on his chest. David laughed. He said "That was fun." David smiled again. He said "Looks like we are here by the old sycamore, so much memories here." David had a tear in his eye, as his memory of his parents dying replayed. He remembered when he heard the tree fall. No one knew where the tree had came from, butt only David knew. It was his ex guardians. He was forced not to tell anyone until Tahlia came along. David still had tears on his eyes. He tried to wipe them away, but more tears appeared.

Jackson laughed as Jac smelled him, and then muttered, “Thanks…hey, we could call you Foster, that would make things easier,” Jackson replied, as she told him about the name thing. Then, Jac raced off, and Jackson was quickly behind her and David, but he managed to catch up, only to find Jac and David laying on top of each other, David crying slightly. Coughing awkwardly, Jackson muttered, “Um…I, yeahhhh, I think I’m going to leave now while I haven’t said anything weird yet…” but he stopped short as he looked to the sycamore, and remembered the great times his parents had come here with him when he was younger. Staring up at it, he also remembered that there was lots of random things that happened under this tree, like what was going on right now.
