The morning slowly dawns and I yet again, I have failed to get a moments sleep. The hunger pains have grown so bad that I cried last night. I think I heard Neola crying too last night. Shes only 3- and it hurts to hear her crying because she is starving. We are all starving. I had had a tough time stealin' stuff. The Peacekeepers had been more alert recently. I didn't know why or anythin- maybe its cause one of us got caught. I hadn't seen Lacey in a while and I wonder if she was the one who was taken. It'd be shame if she were. She was a nice kid. Good at theiving. I look across at my sister and 4 brothers and sigh heavily. If I don't get them food soon then- well. They'll die. Slowly I climb out of bed and get dressed. If I can catch the morning rush- maybe I can steal some money and buy some food with that. Maybe a load of bread or some vegatables.
Sneaking past my ma's room- I walk downstairs and out the door. There is still a heavy fog, lying over District 6 and the people moving about the street going to work are merely shadows in it. Their bodies moving like ghosts through the mist. I run down the steps of my house and walk into the swarm of people. All are workers- going to work. Others are older school children who are going off to college. I do have school but not until 9- and its about 6 o'clock at the moment. My stomach growls painfully again- and I know I need to get the money. I weave in and out of the people looking for my victum- looking for someones pocket to pick from in hopes I will find money that will buy me and my family enough food to last a week or so- or atleast until I can go out and steal again without raising suspision. I look round- for someone who looks like they'd carry a large sum of money on them.
I see someone- and I go for them, not quickly- casually. I walk up beside them- and slide my hand into their coat pocket but find nothing. I slowly draw my hand out and drop back a bit looking for someone else. I gaze around- and see someone else. I slowly walk up beside them and dig my hand swiftly into their pocket. This time my luck prevails and I find a few loose bank notes and a couple of coins; but it isn't enough to feed my family. So- I look for someone else as the person I just stole from carries on walking without notice. I see someone else and I again- walk beside them before I put my hand into their pocket. I feel something- a purse or wallet of some sort. I slowly, draw it from them- stopping to look at it; all the while hoping that the owner of the wallet didn't notice me.
