Neima sat on the stairs of her three story house, throwing rocks at the sidewalk. "Stupid Capitol. Stupid Careers. Stupid, stupid us." She hated the way Panema was run. Despite the fact her life was perfect - money, family, and friends - she felt alone. It seemed like no one else here cared if 23 of us we're murdered every year. Take that back - forced to murder each other. Is that still murder if its forced?
Yes, she decided, it was still murder.
If we all got together and decided, hey, none of us are gonna kill each other in the arena this year. We'll just sit here, waiting, what would happen? Neima didn't know. She wasn't sure if she wanted to.
A whistle. She heard a whistle. To the left of her. She turned her dark eyes to face a boy about a year older than her or more. He was perhaps 18 or 19. "What do you want?" The boy simply smirked and headed off the in other direction.
Her eyes narrowed into slits. She got up, dusting the crushed bread crumbs, which she had made in anger, off her lap. "Wait a minute!" she yelled. He didn't stop. So, Neima began to chase after the boy. He ran through the city, and it seemed like she would be chasing the boy forever, when something caught her. Neima fell out from under her legs, and her face smacked hard against the cold, black pavement, lined in jewels her District produced. She groaned. Getting up, she dusted the grime from her persian indigo-colored hair. She whipped around, trying to find the boy who seemed to be in a hurry - hiding something, even. He was nowhere to be seen.
Instead, she ended up walking down a lowly lit alleyway. Cliche, and the tiniest bit creepy if you've read enough horror stories. On either side of her were doors. Wooden, metal, gold, and even.. marble. She leaned her back against one of them, not realizing it was there. It creaked open, and she almost fell back into it. Turning around, she looked into the room. It was better lit then the alleyway, at least. Furniture, beautifully embellished with the most expensive jewels and lined in gold and covered in silk sat pushed over all over the room. "Hello?"
