Rita opened the door to the rain and pulled on a jacket. Times like these caused her to be immensely grateful that her family could afford a nice, waterproof jacket instead of just some wool sweater that would soak through in minutes. She stepped out into the pouring rain, blinking it out of her eyes. It felt good, like taking a cold shower, after the intense heat of the kitchen, where her mother had been cooking dinner. She knew that her mother would want her to stay indoors on a day like this, but she wanted to run. She wanted to run so badly that she couldn't contain it anymore.
She ran down a road towards the square, trying to figure out how to help her family earn more money. She could sell some old clothes in the square, but that wouldn't earn much. She could sign up for tesserae, though her mother strongly discouraged it. She could... what? She was only fourteen, and her family used to have so much more than it did now. She couldn't figure this one out. Tesserae... was that the only answer? She didn't want to worry about the games. She wanted to be herself, at home, safe. Was that even possible here?
Rita realized that she had gone in a full circle, and she was back home. No. She didn't want dinner. She would stay outside. She looked up, and the rain stopped. Funny, she thought. Maybe it's a sign. Maybe it's telling me that I don't need to worry. It was a comforting thought.
