Background

In Panem a prisoner- prisioner 24601- has finally come to the end of his sentance at the detention centre. His name, is Jean Valjean and he was locked away for 20 years for stealing and breaking and entering. Head Peacekeeper- Javert- lets him go but promises he will find him since Javert does not think people like Valjean should not be trusted. Once free- Valjean struggles to find work and ends up stealing yet again from a Bishop. Once caught, the bishop makes up an excuse so he will go free. The Bishop tells him that with the things he stole- he is to get a better life for himself. Valjean listens and ends up being a governer for District 4.

The Plot

At a work house outside Paris District 4 a woman named Fantine is bullied by the other female workers and is eventually kicked out. From there she goes into prostitution in order to pay for her daughter Cossette. She soon falls ill of TB and Valjean, promises her that he will find her daughter and take care of her. Fantine then dies. Jean Valjean then sets off in order to find Cossette who is living with two horrible evil inn keepers who live the country putskirts of District 4. There, Cossette is being forced by Mr and Mrs Thénardiers, to do chores while their own daughter- Eponine- gets spoilt. Luckily, Cossette is found by Valjean and he buys her off the Thénardiers.

Some years later in Paris District 4- students are beginning to plan a rebellion against the government Capitol because they do not like the way the people are being treated. While planning this, the Thénardiers arrive in town with Eponine and their gang. Eponine falls in love with Marius- a student who wants to join the cause. However, one day he sees Cossette and falls deeply in love- which annoys Eponine. Both Marius and Cossette spend time together before Marius leaves to go help out with the rebellion. Eponine, tries to find him but is shot and is first to die. Marius, sad, wants to die and is more determined to fight for the cause.

Marius, Valjean and the other students fight but all but Marius and Valjean live. Marius is injured and has to be taken through the sewyers to saftey. Here, Valjean is confronted with Javert- who has been on the hunt for Valjean for many years. They argue before Valjean is let go, but Javert promptly jumps off a bridge to his death; leaving Valjean feeling guilty. Meanwhile- Cossette looks after Marius as he heals and they end up getting married. On their wedding night, Valjean is nowhere to be seen. He is hiding somewhere- knowing he is going to die. Cossette and Marius find him but he dies shortly afterwards. THE END.

Background: Prisoner 24601. Released from imprisonment after serving 19 years (five for stealing a loaf of bread and fourteen for multiple escape attempts). He decides to break his parole and turns his life around, proving that the corrupt can make themselves virtuous once more. He changes his identity, becoming the wealthy mayor of a small town. He later adopts Cosette, the daughter of Fantine. At the end he dies and the spirit of Fantine thanks him for raising her child.

Background: Respects the law above all else and relentlessly pursues Valjean, hoping to bring the escaped convict to justice. He firmly believes that humans cannot change for the better. In the end he commits suicide.
