The camera rattles a little as the boy sets it down, however you cannot see anything but a blur. It takes a moment to focus, and the boy's long, pale arm sets it steady before drawing back. He takes a deep breath, the kind that you can just about hear if you concentrate, but only if you know it's there. And then he ducks into the picture and smiles shyly at his own camera, adjusting it nervously one more time. He hesitates. And then the boy, who looks maybe sixteen, stares out of the frame for a moment. It is as though listening to someone talking far away. Then he looks right into the camera and begins to speak. "My name is Klaus, and today I'm filming a movie about my life." His voice is smooth, yet hesitant and shy. It matches the way he is sitting, hunched over in a kind of quiet, defiant confidence which is lurking just beneath the surface of his skin. He smiles, and only then is it that you realize his sharp cheekbones, defined features and slanting jawline, jagged against the white-washed wall that serves as a background. For this alone he is striking, although by the way he sits, you can tell that he does not know it. He blinks, as though wondering what exactly he planned to do next. "Welcome," he says slowly, as though carefully selecting the perfect words before he says them. "To the horror that is my life." It is as though the boy's steady gaze, even fixed on the camera, is swallowing you. His eyes a pale shade of grey, they almost seem to hold information well beyond his years. It is then that the camera shuffles, and the white wall and the pale boy slide from view, leaving the screen filled with a blur of colors unidentifiable as objects. The shuffling sound of footsteps greets you, and you barely have time to wonder where the boy is taking you before he sets you down on a table and begins to talk again, more confidently this time. "My name is Klaus Goravich, and I am seventeen years old." The boy runs his fingers through his messy brown hair, which doesn't look as though he has ever combed it. "I live in District Three." At this, a dark look mars with his sharp features, as though there are places he would rather live, far away from Panem. He takes a moment to collect himself and then turns back to the camera, looking at it with those startlingly cloudy eyes. "The main reason I am making this movie is to show you what my life is like. Not in Panem in general, because if you are watching this then you know that. No, in my family." He swings the camera around to face away from himself. Instead it points toward a group of children, sitting cross-legged on the floor, playing cards with solemn expressions on their faces. He steps around the camera and sits on the edge of the circle, secluded from the rest. "These are my siblings. I have five, all up. I'm a quadruplet." He makes a face as though he is not quite sure whether this is a positive thing, a negative thing, or simply his life. He decides on the latter. "So," the boy adjusts the camera, clears his throat and looks pointedly at the sibling closest to him, who is carefully pulling their cards into their chest. "This is Tacara." His face slides in beside hers, and the resemblance is suddenly striking. They share the same arched eyebrows, the same thin lips and square faces. He points the camera around the room, setting it upon each sibling one by one."Marina, Lyana, Jamarion," his voice has a peculiar tone to it, as though he is not altogether comfortable in one of his sibling's company. "Hopper." The last boy is taller, broader, and does not share the same striking, definiate features with the rest. His lips are slightly fuller, his face softer and more gentle. "Hey, kid, what are you doing?" he asks, unfazed by the video camera capturing him in time. His voice is affectionate, and even from behind the camera, when Klaus replies you can hear the smile on his lips. "I'm making a movie." The sound of footsteps can be heard, and Klaus sets the camera down on the table, facing the children. He walks to Hopper, and for the first time you can see his long legs and fairly weak build, his striped t-shirt covered in a navy blue blazer. Glancing over his elder brother's shoulder, the bond that the two have is striking and obvious. You can see it even now, as you watch through the lens of the camera. Hopper doesn't draw his cards to his chest as his younger sister did, but shows them to Klaus. The younger boy points at a card, and then another, and then Hopper lets out a gasp of realisation. "I win!" Hopper declares, throwing down his cards in triumph. At that, an argument breaks out all at once, with cries of protest concerning the legitimacy of the win reaching the camera. Without another word Klaus scoops up the camera and heads away in a blur. The argument continues without anyone seeming to realize that the boy is gone. When he reaches the room with the white walls once more, he sets the camera steady. "It's not so bad as all that," he says nervously, his eyes looking right into the lens of the camera. "They don't let me play cards with them anymore, because I win every single time." There is no trace of pride or self-importance in his voice, just simple facts. "I don't mind. I read. I like to be alone." At that, he spins the camera around the face away from him. What fills the screen now is shelve upon shelve of books, neatly arranged and labelled. There is a shuffling somewhere out of shot, as Klaus moves around the room and the siblings fight faintly in the background. Then he ducks back into the frame, grinning sheepishly. "This is my library." The boy runs his finger over the books carefully, steadily, as though he is looking for something, yet he knows exactly where it is. Suddenly he looks completely at ease. . . . The boy walks a couple of steps across the frame, hooking one foot into the bottom rung of a ladder and reaching for something. When he reappears, he is grinning, each of his teeth straight and white. His eyes light up. "This is my favorite book. It's about survival. You know, plant guides, how to make a fire, finding shelter. All of that." He lowers is voice and glances around. "I'm not supposed to have it, really. Hopper found it for me when he was sorting through grandpapas things. I think it's from before the war." The book in question, a battered, old thing about the thickness of a good dictionary, swims into focus. You can almost see the thoughts reflected through Klaus's eyes, it's my favorite because it teaches me how to survive. You know, if I was to go exploring. Find a better place, away from here. He doesn't say this. The boy tucks the book away, steps out of the view of the camera and shouts out for Hopper to come and help him. Footsteps can be heard. An affectionate sigh. And then Hopper is there, the perfect picture of a protective and understanding big brother, grinning at the boy behind the camera. Klaus stays behind the camera this time, aiming it and playing around with the zoom. "So, because this documentary is about me, I'm going to interview you. About me as a person." Klaus's voice is smiling, and Hopper hesitates. "So, uh, how would you describe me, in, like, five words?" "Well, little bro. Your'e the smartest kid I've ever met, that's for sure." Hopper looks far more relaxed before the camera than Klaus does, and similarly the younger boy seems to feel more at home behind the lens. You watch on, admiring Hoppers broad shoulders and cropped hair, his confident demeanour and outward affection. "Also the most stupid, oblivious and naive kid I've met. But still the smartest. You're shy. And... how many words have I used?" "That's five qualities you've labelled me with so far," Klaus replies without a moments hesitation, as though he was counting all along. "And who would you say I'm closest to, in the whole world?" At this, Hopper looks a little taken aback. He smiles, and looks down at the laces on this shoes. "Well, if we're talking human beings, then me. But I don't think you like human beings so much. I think you're closer to everything else. You know. Books and music and objects and politics and anything with facts. Reasons. Not people, because people confuse you. Numbers, things that are definite. No risks, no chances." Hopper stops, looking thoughtful. "Nerd." "What?" Klaus suddenly sounds shy and cautious again. "Nerd. I've decided that that is the perfect word to describe you. You know, kind of frightened yet somehow freaking adorable. Yes." The screen flickers to black as the scene finishes, only to light up again with another of the Goravich siblings sitting in front of the lens. You wonder where Hopper has gone, why Klaus shut of the camera. In a second, voices begin to fill your ears once more. . . . "What do you see as your role within the family?" Klaus directs the question at his second eldest brother, Jamarion, who sits angrily on the carpet. He gives the impression of a bull in a china shop, for he is a good few inches taller than Klaus and does not hold himself so quietly and carefully. He looks right into the camera and answers the question, his voice deep and irritated. "I don't know. Can I leave now?" Klaus's strong determination shows through as he ducks into the frame, adjusts the camera to account for his brothers height, and shakes his head. "No, Jamarion. Not until you answer the question." The boy before the camera looks uncomfortable, as though he hopes nobody is watching him being told what to do by the shy and clever Klaus. "I guess I'm the tough one. You know, the one who's always bashing people up, the one who nobody reckons has any feelings. The one who doesn't cry when we watch the games." The boy gives a shrug and makes to rise from his place on the floor. "What positions within our family would you say the rest of us have? You can leave once you answer."Klaus presses, sounding slightly put off by his brothers angered expression. "Well, Marina is the odd little one. Lyana is the outgoing, bossy one. Tacara's just pathetic, and you're... I don't know. Nerdy? A know it all. Hopper's quite the charmer, the nice guy." Jamarion almost spits the words, as if he is disgusted at the thought of someone being nice. And then he picks himself up from the floor and leaves as fast as he came. Klaus turns the camera on himself once more. He looks into the camera and smiles as the door shuts and he is alone again. The camera flashes dark and the next scene begins. It takes you a moment to realise that the camera is now filming outside, where each of the children play, kicking a battered old ball around a grassy, if slightly overgrown back garden. "So, my day pretty much involves reading, arguing with Jamarion, technically winning the argument but getting punched in the face anyway, and then getting dragged out here to play something. Today, it's soccer." You can hear the boys voice out of shot before you recognise him. Then he seps in, looking out of place among the others, who are each dressed in running clothes and sports gear. He still wears his striped t-shirt, although his blazer has been discarded. Someone blows a whistle, and it's shrill sound echoes about the place, distorting slightly as it does. The game begins. And then the ball flies toward the camera the the sky is all that can be seen. You turn away from the video after staring at the sky for a while, and begin to laugh. What you have seen is hardly a demonstration of a movie. Not even a home video. Just a kid, just any other kid with a camera trying to prove why his life is special. But it's not.
