ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS

Welcome to the Artistic Gymnastics tournament of the very first Panem Olympic Games! The gymnastics complex is located inside the Olympic Arena, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you all warm up with your coaches before your turn comes to perform, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is simple. Feel free to roleplay your character getting ready for their performance on each apparatus, and then paste the code [*dice=10] without the asterisks after you make each of the four moves. You can do them in any order you'd like (vault, beam, uneven bars, floor) but be sure you're performing the assigned move and rolling the die after you do each one. You will roll a number 1-10 on each die, and that represents the number of points you get for your execution score for the move. Your execution score will be added to the difficulty score (which I will assign for each move) and that will be your score for that apparatus. After you've rolled for each move, all of your scores will be added together to determine who has the highest all-around score. After you roll, again feel free to roleplay as you go along.

The harsh, buzzing light of the flourescent lights overhead fills Eris' consciousness as it blends with the roar of the crowd and rises as a clashing, chaotic symphony. She grins widely under the blinding brightness; it reflects off the sticky-bright surface of her teeth and the multifaceted sparkle of the rhinestones covering the fabric of her white leotard in artful swirls. This is the epitome of what she looks for in life, glory gained from risk, the possibility of fame and fortune in exchange for hurtling through the air on nothing but the power of her own body and a fragmented prayer to a God she doesn't believe in that she doesn't plummet to an early death.

Her heart beats a frantic one-two, one-two, one-two drumroll in her ears that underscores the gloriously chaotic music of the packed arena, electricity sparking in her veins as she curls her bare toes against the grippy tape holding down the floor and stretches her arms skyward, every cell a coiled spring locked in suspense. From the stands she can see her adoptive parents, both bearing grins as feral and hungry as their own. After a back-to-back run of having Games glory snatched from their family's fingers at the last moment, everyone bearing the last name Moreno is something beyond hungry for recognition and honor. They expect Eris to bring them both. After all, it's why they plucked her from the commonplace hell of the community home, why they gave her a knife and told her to kill if she wanted to live to see breakfast, why they've spent the last few months drilling flips and tucks and vaults into her mind and limber flexibility into her limbs. Despite the fact that they probably want her to, she doesn't feel any pressure.

Eris lives her life so that she never has anything to lose, but a gold medal would be a hell of a thing to gain.

Music explodes over the speakers in a discordant thunderbolt and Eris launches into a blur of motion across the floor, flipping head over heels until her vision swims into a dizzy haze, limber musculature taut and wired. Everything seems to fall into slow motion as she emerges from that first series of flips; the graceful arc of her torso, the blonde fan of her ponytail flying behind her.

The agonizing stab of pain as her ankle rolls.

Eris hits the floor hard, a shriek of misery ripping over her lips that drowns out even the demanding beat of her music. Stars explode across her field of vision as she collapses in on herself, curling into a ball of pain for one, two, three seconds. That's all the weakness she allows herself before gritting her teeth and dragging herself back up to her feet, picking up the routine with the next measure of music. But picking herself up by the bootstraps isn't enough, not at this competition. They don't give medals for effort, and Eris would sooner claw her own eyes out than have to endure getting a nice little gold star sticker emblazoned with "you tried." The rest of her floor routine is cautious and stilted, skipping over the trickier maneuvers to protect her injured leg. Eris almost sees the "1" on her performance score before the card goes up.

In the stands, the Morenos look positively mortified. Eris swears she can hear Elspeth cackling from all the way across the gym. Scowling, she limp-stalks her way over to the uneven bars and launches into yet another routine, whizzing around the cylindrical tubes and suspended every so often in that sinking, dizzying sensation of free-fall (she very nearly whoops in delight every time, but she does have some sense of dignity, even after her embarrassing start). Still, the fresh agony from her ankle is distracting; her form isn't what it could be and it shows in the "5" that flashes with an unholy horror in front of her.

At this point, her parents both have their heads in their hands, and Eris can only imagine the verbal blitzkrieg waiting for her after she's finished, not to mention the hits that will be out on her once they all get home. She'd be surprised if she makes it three days before she wakes up to a knife in her chest. Still, such is the law of Chaos. Sometimes floor routines go awry and ankles get sprained. Sometimes parents get pissed. Sometimes Fate is a bitch.

But Eris is willing to bet money that she's an even bigger bitch.

She makes her way to the balance beam and ascends gracefully, one foot in front of the other on the narrow surface with her injured ankle throbbing in protest. She ignores the pain with an impassive face and a muffled groan as she launches headfirst into her routine, flipping and cartwheeling effortlessly ad swallowing the budding screams every time she lands on her bad foot. At this point it would be wiser to lie down and accept defeat, but she's always been to stubborn for such a thing. A wide, wild smile pulls at the corners of her lips even though her eyes swim with unshed tears of agony, and she flips off the beam with flawless grace just in time to see a beautiful "10" spring up before her.

The Morenos look like someone has slapped them all with a dead trout.

Eris allows herself a few seconds to catch her breath, and then a few more to laugh triumphantly, an eerie, stormy alto murmur that corries with it the distinct feeling of impending wrath. The final obstacle looms in front of her, the vault standing there and almost taunting her with its presence. This could be a horrible idea. Landing wrong could do permanent damage to her already injured ankle, not to mention get her a piss-poor score and a one-way ticket to being the family laughingstock up until someone jams a sword through her spinal column. But getting it right... well, it's an interesting idea.

Gaze tearing away from the faces of her family, Eris slips a delicate finger beneath the skin-tight material of her leotard sleeve, withdrawing a dull metallic circle from the stretchy fabric. The coin winks playfully under the stadium lights as she rubs it contemplatively between her fingers before balancing it on the back of her thumb and flicking it skyward. Heads, I go, tails, I drop the event.

The coin comes up heads.

Eris tucks the chip of metal back into her leotard with a grin, squaring her shoulders and lining her body up with the vault before taking off at a breakneck run and planting her hands firmly on the unyielding surface. In a fraction of a second, she is airborne, all lithe limbs and flawless control as she spins and whirls through space like a fiery comet, the stones on her outfit a sparking blur and her hair flying out in a shimmering trail behind her. The floor looms closer like a determined enemy and Eris stares it down withe equal determination, lining her feet up at a perfect angle and sticking the landing. Her leg barely even twinges.

Another "10" flashes on the screen and the crowd, including the Morenos, go insane, cheering and whistling and some even chucking flowers over the railing in her direction. Eris picks up a single red rose and smirks into the bloom, her free hand absently tracing the outline of the coin tucked into her sleeve. Not bad for a Hail-Mary routine. Not bad at all.

The heady thrill of competition. The crowds cheering, the looks on the competitors faces, the recognition that came with victory. Jade thrived on it all. She breathed it in deep and let it fill her body as she smirked. Sure this wasn't exactly what she had trained for most her life. It wasn't even what she did best in her Career training. Her strength lay in stealth. But agility was a part of that, and Jade was nothing if not agile.

So she'd convinced her father to sign both her and her brother up for the games. Have to keep an eye on him after all. It had taken quite a bit of bargaining and even downright arguing for her father to agree. She'd promised prestige for their family. A prize to add to their household, something she wouldn't even have to kill for. Jade had no intention of sharing her glory. This was her time to prove herself, but her father had given her the same speech about family honor and pride. About not embarrassing them on the national stage, like he expected Jasper to do. But she couldn't think about all that now. Now she was here. And she was ready.

Standing at the end of the runway, Jade cracked both her ankles. The vault was never her strength. She preferred keeping her feet on the ground. Still she needed a decent score to even think about winning. Narrowing her eyes and drowning out the rest of the world, she took off at a full sprint and hit the springboard dead on, launching her body into the air. She pushed off the vault and tucked her arms in, twisting around, counting the moments until she needed to land.

And she sat down the landing. Her foot slipped out on the slick mat, and before she could stop herself, she fell ungracefully to the floor. It took a moment to realize what had happened. Once it sank in though, Jade slammed her fist into the mat next to her repeatedly. Dammit! Dammit!

She was to start on the uneven bars, something she was pretty sure she could handle, but then again overconfidence brought failure. All she knew, was that she would attempt to do them and however she did, well, that was how she did. Strapping on her wrist guards, a luxury she normally only had at the training gym, she sized up the bars. They looked to be almost identical to the bars back in District one, but the only way to be sure was to test them out. A layer of chalk dust on her hands and the bars would hopefully keep her from slipping and falling to the ground. That would be a big chunk out of her points, and even though it was only the first event for her, she had seen the other girls do their routines. A few slips here and there, maybe, but that was all.

Either way, it was her time to go.

She ran the few steps up to the spring board, jumping hard on it as she reached it. Flying upward, she extended her hands and pushed off of the lower bar to soar to the higher, grabbing it before beginning her swing. She felt great at the moment, but having only just started it was no wonder she felt completely exhilarated. No longer feeling the eyes of the crowd, or hearing their calls, she swung. Just as she was about to let go for a moment and spin in the air, her grip became awkward. Doing the trick anyway, she released the bar under her hands and somersaulted. Reaching out for the bar, she managed to grab it, barely. It would have been easy to see how awkward it was. The rest of her routine was alright, but a few other mess ups made her wince.

The big finale, the dismount, was all that was left. Building up her momentum, she spun around the bar twice before feeling as though she had enough speed to make a clean exit. Waiting for the moment, she released the bar, spinning twice around before landing neatly on the spot. Well, it would have been neat if not for the little hop she had made, seemed she couldn't absorb that much momentum. Standing up proudly, for all she had not done as great, she waited for her score. The "6" flashed up on the screen, making her smile. She hadn't messed up too badly.

Being smaller, being younger had very few advantages, so Shiv jumped at the opportunity to participate in gymnastics for the Panem Olympics. She was also signed up for two other events — foil fencing and a relay — but being smaller than the competition was not as helpful in those events. Sure, in fencing her target area would be smaller, and in relay she had less mass to move, but she was young and much more flexible than the older girls, so she definitely had the advantage over them in gymnastics.

Shiv's tendency was to zone out while she competed, to see nothing, hear nothing, feel nothing. Instead, she just was. The judges had given them a move set that they were to replicate, and Shiv was focused on doing what was required of her to the best of her ability. She took a handful of deep breaths, honed in on her target — first, the vault — and then took off toward it, launching herself into the air.

Her landing was attrocious; she didn't stick it and she was fairly certain that her ankle was sprained. Tears welling up in her eyes, she gritted her teeth and tried to fight through it, stubbornly continuing on the competition though she knew that there was no hope for her. She'd failed, miserably, she was in pain, and the only thing worse than doing as poorly as she knew that she would with the rest of her moves would be to not do them at all.
