DECATHLON: DISCUS THROW

Welcome to the Decathlon tournament of the very first Panem Olympic Games! The track and field complex is located within the Olympic Arena, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the backstop, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is simple. Feel free to roleplay your character setting up for their throw, and then paste the code [*dice=825+4100] without the asterisks into your post THREE TIMES and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This will result in a four-digit number that will correspond to a distance, which is read with a decimal point separating the first two and the last two digits (e.g. 4509 is read as 45.09 meters) Each participant will be measured by their best throw only, not their average distance or the sum of their throws.

The competitor with the furthest distance wins this event. Distances for this event will be continually updated on this thread; however, the overall decathlon standings will be updated on a separate thread.

After you have rolled, feel free to edit your post with your character's reaction to each throw if you so desire, but please keep it to one post rather than multiple.

There is NO POSTING ORDER; you may post your shots whenever you please. Keep in mind, though, that this is meant to move pretty fast, so we're not looking for exceedingly long posts.

She tried not to think about how pathetic that the time of her sprint had been. She'd ran so much faster, so many times! Now, the one chance she had to actually prove herself she was going to be stupid and screw up? Absolutely not. She wasn't going down, not without a battle fought from hell itself. Anger was what was keeping her going, anger that demanded she take another brave step. She was getting closer and closer to her mark. One step closer to fame. To glory. She lifted the heavy disk, and turned her back to the large arena that surrounded her. Two deep breaths. That's all she allowed herself before she was performing her first throw.

She watched it sail, and quickly turned her back again, already prepared for another throw. She wanted to demand the respect she deserved. She wanted people to notice her. She wanted it to happen now, and this event might just do that. It isn't everyday you see somebody as small as a Bryze throwing around heavy objects for sport, but that was the thing about being a Bryze. Size didn't matter. They were fierce competitors, regardless of their size, because size had nothing to do with it.

The discus throw didn't take a particularly large amount of skill; it was mainly about strength, form, and accuracy, which could apply to a number of battle situations, so they'd often used it in training as a way to perfect those skills. It was interesting to see it used as an actual competition, because it wasn't that intricate of an event; you spun around a couple times with a really heavy frisbee-looking thing in your hands looking like a total idiot, then when you thought you'd gained enough momentum you let go and the disc went flying. Then you just had to hope it got farther than your opponents and you were good. Nevertheless, though, Topaz couldn't quell her eagerness to give it a shot.

Only one girl had thrown before her, and she was none other than the cousin of Julian Bryze, the only other Career victor besides Topaz who would be competing in these Olympics. Tope had mixed opinions about Julian; they'd had a civil discussion on his stop in One on the victory tour, and they were quite similar in a large number of ways. That was one of the reasons why she felt threatened by him, though; deep down, she was afraid he was rising to take her place as the most beloved Career victor... or even victor in general. Beloved? Maybe you used to be beloved, but now to everyone you're just a sleaze. She pushed the thought away and focused on the disc in her hand; it was heavy, but as she held it she remembered what to do. She began to wind up, getting ready for the first of her three throws.

The first and last throw were solid, but it was the second that was truly amazing; it sailed past even the Bryze's farthest, which was pretty damn far. 49.08m, flashed the board. Wow. Pleased with herself, Topaz turned to make way for the next thrower, all the while thinking that maybe she'd really be able to prove she hadn't been crowned victor for nothing.

Whilst waiting for her turn to throw the discus - an event that in her eyes was odd and ridiculous - she felt her confidence diminishing. When it came to athletics, Locust compensated for lack of upper body strength with toned legs, speed, and excellent coordination. Sure, she had developed her ability to use small weapons such as knives and daggers to suit specific situations, and a discus was rather small, but this was obviously a skill focused on the upper body. Unless she could somehow hurl the disk with her feet, she was going to miss her opportunity to shine and instead sigh with exasperation when the event was finally over. With a careless shrug, she leaned against the nearest wall as the girl ahead of her proceeded to toss her discus - Locust paying no attention to her competition. As tempting as it was to watch a victor perform, she needed to maintain as much confidence as possible, even during an event that practically spelled failure for her in bold lettering.

When her name was announced, she exhaled through her nostrils and made her way over to the discus. She lifted it up with both hands, testing its weight within each palm before deciding how she would actually throw it, and shifted it to her right hand. How was she going to perform this gracefully? What form would she use? Which was the best to suit her body type and level of strength? She mentally pictured herself executing the throw, and with a gentle nod she made her decision and prepared her body to copy it. She figured it would hardly soar within even a few feet of Topaz’s or the Bryze’s, but this time it didn’t bother her. She would learn to endure the failure and move on without any regrets. Besides, this was still one of many events in the decathlon. She still had a sliver of a chance.

Frick. It was a decent time but I could have done 100x better. Why was I so slow.He knew he couldn't think about the run. It was over. He was now at the discuss throw. He didn't even know if he could get a decent score since he was not the best at throwing.

He knew thinking would only make it worse. He grabbed the first DISCUS and pulled it back. Then he threw it with all his might. Watching it sail threw the air.[dice=825+4100]

He grabbed the next discus. This time he didn't let any time pass. He wound up and threw it. [dice=825+4100] He watched it sail through the air again. Hoping that this was going to be better then the last throw. All he could do was hope since that is probably all he had left.

He grabbed the last discus. He looked at it closely. The object were small but weird looking. He didn't care. He grabbed it and wound it up. His mind raced. He was thinking about how all he wanted was to do a great throw. He released it watching it sail through the air across the field.[dice=825+4100]

Out of all of the Decathlon events, this one was by far Apex's least favorite. He had never been a fan of Brute strength, and as much as he trained, he could never seem to get the technique for throwing this stupid heavy disk. He was convinced he would get the worst scores. Apex readied himself and made his way to the starting point, picking up the disc. He wasn't going to tire himself out, especially on an event that mattered the least to him. As he thought forward to the fencing events, he tossed the discs has far as he could in succession, and walked off very upset with himself. So far, he was last, and he thought he could at least do better than that.

Four's mind was racing with thoughts from the race. Thoughts like "How did I do? Did I do good?" The Decathlon wasn't over yet, he still had tons of events to do. His second event, however was Discus. He was sort of strong, Four had a flail as his chosen weapon and he'd go on about how heavy that chained ball was. Maybe he could get a good throw on it. He had to make his family proud, he had to make his friends proud, he had to make his girlfriend proud. Especially make his father proud.

Four took his stance with the discus in his hand. He put on the most serious face he could, his eyebrows knitting together. He leaned back a bit, and threw the discus. He shielded his eyes a bit so he could see the discus in the District 4 sunlight. Four watched it as it landed, and the result was...

Ugh, that wasn't very impressive. But I guess you learn from your mistakes, right? Fair enough. Four took another stand. He needed to make this better then the last one. The District 2 lad crouched down, throwing it with much more force then last time. The discus flew in the air and landed.

Since he'd dominated the 100 meter dash, Tiger hadn't dropped the self-assured grin that plastered his face. It wasn't that he was being arrogant — in fact, he was more humble than the majority of his peers, though he was prone to bouts of superiority like the rest of them — or that he was gloating or anything of the sort; he was just happy with himself, plain and simple. Aside from his charm, physical prowess was all that Tiger had going for him in his opinion, and for that reason, he was pleased with himself for hours whenever he did well. Around half of the playing field had preceded him in discus and he wasn't entirely confident in his ability to seize first place from Topaz Ross, whose furthest disc was a comfortable distance in front of the others, but that didn't mean that he wasn't going to do his best.

He stepped into the circle, discus in hand, eyeing the field. Tiger knew that his greatest difficulty with the sport was keeping his powerful throws in bounds; often they'd sail for a long ways before crashing down somewhere just outside of the line. Sometimes, when the wind took it even further, Tiger's disc would hurtle towards the crowds of spectators that had lined up on either side, though he'd been fortunate to never injure anyone too seriously. Occasionally — though it was rare — Tiger would lose track of the field entirely while he spun to gain momentum and send his discus smashing into the backstop.

He wound up to throw, pumping his arm — one, two, three — before he spun around to gain momentum to loose the throwing disc. Besides glancing to make sure that his aim was good — that the discus stayed in bounds — Tiger didn't allow himself to see how far it had traveled; knowing his performance while he still had any throws left would only throw him. He repeated the throw twice, sending another two projectiles hurtling across the field.

His first throw had been his best, and it hadn't traveled enough to even put him in the top three. It wasn't a bad throw — he hadn't come in last, after all — but it wasn't great by any means. Tiger wasn't too terribly disheartened by the poor performance, but it did knock him down a few pegs after his fabulous time in the 100m.
