SWIMMING: 100M FREESTYLE

Welcome to the 100m Freestyle tournament of the very first Panem Olympic Games! The swimming pool is located within the aquatics center, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the pool for your race, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is simple. Feel free to roleplay your character getting ready to begin the race, and then paste the code [*dice=1000+5000] without the asterisks into your post and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This will result in a four-digit number that will correspond to a time, which is read with a decimal point separating the first two and the last two digits (e.g. 5000 is read as 50.00 seconds)

The competitor with the lowest time wins this event. Times for this event will be continually updated on this thread.

After everyone has rolled, feel free to edit your post with your character's reaction if you so desire, but please keep it to one post rather than multiple.

There is NO POSTING ORDER; you may post your shots whenever you please. Keep in mind, though, that this is meant to move pretty fast, so we're not looking for exceedingly long posts.

Apex, normally full of confidence and vigor, knew he had absolutely know shot of standing on the podium with all these kids from district four around. He just couldn't allow there to be absolutely no representation from district one, even if it meant getting last place. Hopefully the strength of his legs and the natural athleticism would do some good in this race, and as far as he was concerned, if he didn't get last here, he'd have proven that even in the midst of adversity, district one could hold their own.

Swimming was something Reef Baitwell was decent at; good thing, too, because if he wasn't he would've really had to start questioning whether or not he truly belonged in District Four. Learning to swim was like a rite of passage for Four kids; if you didn't do it, you were an outcast. Or screwed when it came to finding a job or doing everyday things, at least. And Reef actually liked the things that made his district unique: swimming, sailing, rowing, fish and boats and beaches that were all theirs and theirs alone. Although it was quite an exaggeration to say he liked Career training - in fact, he absolutely despised it - he still liked his district, and that was why the fifteen-year-old had agreed to represent it in the very first Panem Olympics. Not like he'd had a choice; his dad had forced it upon him because Siren and Ray were too busy training for the Games to come. "Someone's gotta represent the Baitwell family, Reef, and it's gotta be you!"[/i] It didn't bother him; he liked to swim, and he liked to row, so that was what he'd be doing.

As he walked into the aquatics center to prep for his first race, the hundred meter freestyle, the blond boy kept his mouth shut and tried very, very hard not to draw attention to himself. If someone talked to him, he'd have to take out his white board and scrawl a response on that, and then they'd know there was something wrong with him. Hey, what's... hey! You're that avox boy! I've heard about you! He'd gotten it too many times to count, and that sort of attention was the last thing he wanted. It had been bad enough when he'd had a tongue; now, it was even worse without.

"Name and district?" As he got to his lane and let his blue District Four warmup jacket fall he heard a voice behind him; swinging around with a gulp he saw that it was some sort of event coordinator holding a clipboard. With a noiseless sigh he pulled his white board out of his bag and scrawled on it. Luckily his handwriting was neat; if it weren't, he'd have a hard time communicating altogether. Reef Baitwell. District Four. The woman's eyes widened for a brief moment, but she snapped herself out of it and scribbled on her own board. "Thank you very much, Reef. Prepare for your race, now!"

As he crouched down, ready to swim, Reef tried to forget about everyone else. This was his race. It didn't belong to the hundreds of people crowding the stands. It belonged to him, and it was his to either screw up or shine in. He couldn't let their presence influence him one bit. Beep. The beep sounded. He was off.

Katrina Sykes

When she had first heard of this Olympics event, Katrina had been skeptical of the real purpose behind it; it wasn't like the Capitol do to something fun for the districts. Especially without the loss of life. But when the swimming events had been announced, she could hardly keep herself from signing up. A chance to show her skills, to compete against the higher career districts, and be rewarded for her efforts. Kat may not have been too keen on dying for her district, but she still had pride for the place she was born in. Getting to shame a bunch of bloodthirsty stuck-up careers on live television was just the icing on the cake. There were only eight entries in the 100m Freestyle, out of a much larger pool of entries, and Katrina was proud of herself for snagging the final one.


She was confidant in her abilities, having honed her skills daily; launching herself from her boat and going as far out as she dared before turning back. And besides, she had her sisters to cheer her on from the sidelines, with no danger of coming home in a coffin. That was all the support she needed, whether she placed well or not. (Of course, she told herself she was going to win this, but they didn't need to know that. Telling her name to the person with the clipboard, she made her way over to her assigned lane, and waited for the sound that would signal the start of the water race. It was a tinny sound when it made itself known, but she dove forward with all of her strength regardless.

She hadn't swum in so long. She simply couldn't bring herself to summon whatever she had been lacking to leap into the water again. And then the sound of competition arose, and she simply had to compete. Not to show only her peers and the rest of her District that she was still the best out there, but to herself. The call of the water and the thirst to come first again shoved her slowly, but surely, to the pool edge. How happy her father had been when he'd seen her out of the house, back where she belonged. And she did belong in the ocean, but she also belonged at the top.

Her old self wanted her there. And even if in her heart she knew she couldn't be the best any more, she'd die trying to get there.

So up she went, poised to dive, the screaming cheers and frantic buzzing that invaded her mind space cutting off to a slow murmur the moment she entered the pool. But this wasn't like the ocean, where she could feel every wave, every ripple, every grain of sand that surrounded her. This water was artificial, enclosed; crafted for this event by scientists and cleaning liquids and chemicals. It was not natural, not what she was used to. Regardless, she kicked with all of her might and powered forward, back into the almost subconscious rhythm that slowly returned to her limbs. Not even her Father's words could shake off the need for her to win. Don't you worry about the others, Q. You belong in that water. That's a fact.

But she belonged on the podium, too.

Could she even swim anymore? The pressure of the first event was just to much. The past three events she was always at the bottom and she had seen her parents sighing, Serena could not help but feel sad. She had done so good in the first event and now she was horrible. Serena knew she could not swim well, her swimming drew energy from her happiness and how relaxed she was. Right now she not happy and tense, it felt horrible to be like this and especially with her brother watching. She knew she was going to hear about this, but she had something in her defence. No one signed him up for the games, just the excuse that he had to train. But Serena knew he was just scared to lose. But that does not matter anymore. It was just her and her thoughts paired with the swimming pool as each competitor looked at each other nervously. Not Serena she was at peace with what place she would get. You can’t win them all right?

Weakly, she dived off the board as bell rung as used her remaining strength she had. Landing her off in last place.

When the Olympics had been announced, Villain was thrilled to have an opportunity to show off his considerable swimming chops. As any good career boy would, he jumped at practially any sort of competition, particularly the ones that allowed him to show off. Villain specifically had been excited for the swimming events, as that was where he focused most of his training. He couldn't avoid combat forever, but his fear of blood did cause him to focus the majority of his efforts on endurance training, swimming, running, and weightlifting in particular. Sometimes he worked with one of his dads on net fighting, since ensnaring his target didn't have to result in bloodshed. If it came down to it — if he was reaped — Villain knew that he'd see a lot of blood, that he'd spill a lot of blood, but he put it out of his mind.

The events that he'd signed up for certainly reflected his training regimen: mostly swimming, with rowing and beach volleyball thrown in for the sake of variety. He was a little bit surprised to see anyone for districts other than four competing at all — didn't they know that District Four would kick their asses? — but the majority of the playing field were people he'd seen from around the district, save for a single district one guy.

He threw off the blue jacket that signified his belonging to District Four and waiting on his starting block, crouched low, until the buzzer sounded. With a deep breath, Villain dove into the water.
