Decathlon: Javelin Throw

DECATHLON: JAVELIN THROW

Welcome to the Decathlon tournament of the very first Panem Olympic Games! The track and field complex is located within the Olympic Arena, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the backstop, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is simple. Feel free to roleplay your character setting up for their throws, and then paste the code [*dice=980+6500] without the asterisks into your post THREE TIMES and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This will result in a four-digit number that will correspond to a distance, which is read with a decimal point separating the first two and the last two digits (e.g. 6882 is read as 68.82 meters) Each participant will be measured by their best throw only, not their average distance or the sum of their throws.

The competitor with the furthest distance wins this event. Distances for this event will be continually updated on this thread; however, the overall decathlon standings will be updated on a separate thread.

After you have rolled, feel free to edit your post with your character's reaction to each throw if you so desire, but please keep it to one post rather than multiple.

There is NO POSTING ORDER; you may post your throws whenever you please. Keep in mind, though, that this is meant to move pretty fast, so we're not looking for exceedingly long posts.

He saw the javelins. This time it was a throwing competition he thought. A perfect way to show off the strength district one has. He watched the first four competitors go. They had done decent and he knew he was equally efficient to them.

It was his turn. He grabbed the javelin and threw it.

He threw again this time getting a 66.28. He knew he could do a lot better then that. He wondered what had caused such a bad throw. He didn't have time to think. He grabbed his last javelin and threw it.

Long jump had gone well, aside from the fact that Tope had looked so stupid doing it that she caught someone - didn't know who, because it had been under their breath and they'd walked away right after - mutter "flying ginger squirrel" following her jump. The victor had unrolled her middle finger in retaliation, hoping whoever it was would catch it, and went over to sit on the grass and stretch before her next event, the javelin throw. Now this she could hopefully excel at; she'd practiced throwing spears over and over again as a Career-in-training until she mastered it, and had proved her competency in her Games with the trident she'd taken from Hermione Easteallas's dead body. A javelin was a true weapon, a true skill... although that meant all the Career teens here would be just as good with it as she was. If not better, because she hadn't trained at all in the past five years, whereas they'd done nothing but. Should've taken a few trips to the gym, princess.

The javelin felt right in her hands as she picked it up, and she concentrated hard on the distance she wanted it to reach before preparing to throw. Just like the Games. Just like your trident. Maybe that wasn't the best mantra to repeat in her head over and over, considering in the Games she'd been aiming at people, but it was all she could think to do. Tuning out everything else, Topaz Ross threw.

Mediocre. That's all it was. It wasn't enough to beat the guy who'd gone before her, and who knew how the ones that went after would do? She was supposed to be good at this! She was a victor! Topaz stalked back over to her grassy spot and sat down in a huff, wishing she'd actually managed to throw a spear like she used to.

Javelins. They were just like spears. They had the same slender form as spears, and they were even thrown, so Scarlette saw herself in training, being instructed by Julian. She saw herself where she was most comfortable. Where she Knew she was good. Here, this was nothing. This was a waste of her time, she decided, because it obviously didn't take true talent, or she would've been shining brighter than anybody else around. There was no denying that. She'd out-shined even Julian, the winner of the Hunger Games, the boy that was supposed to teaching her, when it came to the number events she'd qualified for.

Her luck hadn't been good at all that day, but she didn't need luck. She made her own. She needed nobody other than herself, and she knew that. She knew that anybody else was only going to slow her down, and time wasn't something she had enough of to waste. With a clenched jaw, she marched bravely on to the field after her turn was announced. Why had she been so disappointing? Why couldn't she just be as good as she was in training? Whatever, it didn't matter. This meant nothing, but competition was something she'd grown accustomed to doing, and winning was the only answer. She hefted the sleek weapon she could've killed anybody around with on to her shoulder, walked to her mark, and ran the slow distance required before shooting the javelin out of her hand like a bullet.

What?! So her body had finally decided to work with her mind? It was choosing now to do what she was telling it to do? All three of her throws sailed further than they'd ever been, even in training. As her gaze found the score board, and she saw the number flashing under her name. 74.72. In other words, she'd just taken first place. Well, it was about damn time.

Locust was prepared this time. She wasn’t much of a career - they were trained with weapons of every size and type and were supposedly the most talented athletes alive - but she was not a harmless butterfly. If rubbed the wrong way she could inflict some serious damage despite her family denying the fact. Not direct damage, like the typical attacks one would witness during the Hunger Games. It was never as sudden and brutally messy as a stab to the chest or a slit to the neck. Locust was more discreet and stealthy, like a sly fox hiding amongst the brush waiting for the perfect opportunity to bite an ankle and throw a person completely off balance until they were weak enough to fall. She wasn’t a trained killer waiting for an opportunity to enter the Games - that was far from it, she didn’t want to risk her life for glory. But that didn’t mean she couldn’t practice in case of an emergency - this being qualified as a partial-emergency. The javelin throw was yet another event she had dreaded from the start, but instead of backing off and waiting for the misery to begin she had decided to cooperate with her coach for once and actually familiarized herself with the javelin before stepping onto the field to test these newfound skills.

There was not always an easy way to predict whether or not an athlete would perform well. Locust figured she had a fifty-fifty chance in this event; either her practice would prove itself useful, or she would fail miserably and storm away from the field with her nose pointed at the sky in false dignity. Again, she did not watch Topaz compete before her. She merely used her own scrambling thoughts as barricades to block out any unnecessary or obnoxious noise. The only sound she did respond to was her name, and upon hearing the announcer she stepped outside, flashed a grin to the audience she figured didn’t care about her anyway, and grasped her first javelin. For once, the object she was tossing did not feel foreign in her grasp. Its texture was smooth and its weight familiar, just as she had recalled from practice. Maybe this time she would do something worth applause. Just maybe.

He'd scraped second in long jump, but regardless of how well he did, Tiger still thought that javelin was infinitely more useful than leaping into a pit of sand. Being able chuck a spear far had relevance to combat, even though it didn't exactly take a genius — and Tiger was a far cry from genius — to realize that throwing your weapon away, especially 70 meters away, was an incredibly stupid thing to do unless you wanted to die.

He stepped into the circle, gripping the javelin in hand. Before he wound up to through, Tiger vaguely wondered what would happen if he threw it at someone — that District Two guy, Land, that kept doing well, or perhaps an official or something. It wasn't that Tiger was particularly malicious — on the contrary, he was a decent guy, especially for a career — it was just that he was curious. How would they reprimand him? Would he be tackled to the ground and shipped off to the detention center?

He shook his head, trying to regain his focus as he wound up to hurl his javelin down field — in bounds, away from his opponents, away from the spectators, away from the officials.
