SWIMMING: 4x100 RELAY FREESTYLE

Welcome to the 4x100m Freestyle relay tournament of the very first Panem Olympic Games! The swimming pool is located within the aquatics center, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the pool for your race, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is simple. Feel free to roleplay your character getting ready to begin the race or responding to how their teammates are doing, and then paste the code [*dice=1000+5000] without the asterisks into your post and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This will result in a four-digit number that will correspond to a time, which is read with a decimal point separating the first two and the last two digits (e.g. 5000 is read as 50.00 seconds). In the end, we will add up the scores of everyone on your team to get your total time.

After everyone has rolled, feel free to edit your post with your character's reaction if you so desire, but please keep it to one post rather than multiple.

There is NO POSTING ORDER; you may post your shots whenever you please. Keep in mind, though, that this is meant to move pretty fast, so we're not looking for exceedingly long posts.

A gold medal. Reef Baitwell had finished the hundred meter freestyle swim exactly four-hundredths of a second before Gage Bystrom, and therefore had taken the gold. He'd climbed proudly atop the podium, the anthem of Panem blazing in his ears, and accepted the shimmering medal from the District Four mayor, proud, for once in his life, of something he'd done. He hadn't failed, like he usually did. Of course, swimming was entirely non-combat; those were the areas in which he was subpar. But it was a real gold medal, real proof that in that race, he had been the very best. He'd smiled wide as it had been placed around his neck, not caring who saw his lack of tongue.

Of course, none of that lasted long. Once he stepped down and went for some downtime before his second race - a freestyle relay - he became just as self-conscious as ever, keeping his head down and stowing his medal away in his training bag so that no one would see it and ask questions. Or interviews, what if he was interviewed? What would they do when they realized he couldn't speak? Laugh in his face, probably. Gape and point. Reef had gotten it all before, and he was sure he would get it again. Finally it came time to return to the pool for the relay, and the fifteen-year-old tried his best to ignore the whispers of the crowed as the recognized him, the avox-boy who'd taken first. He'd learned a very important lesson today: there was no way to blend in with the crowd when you had a gold medal.

"Congratulations!" Reef whipped around as he heard the voice, spotting someone he didn't know nodding at him approvingly. He looked like a coach, but not one Reef recognized. The man gave him a friendly clap on the shoulder and Reef smiled as wide as he could with closed lips, hoping that would be an adequate enough thank-you. Apparently it was, because the man walked away; good timing, too, because it was time to line up for the race. Reef would be swimming first, and he hoped beyond all hope he could get his teammates a decent enough lead. Because maybe another medal would sufficiently bump him out of the realm of "disappointment." "Take your mark... get set... beep!"[/i]

This was different, this was unique. This was a chance to prove myself without getting, how do I say this? Killed. I had a chance to sharpen up the skills I already knew I had. Some might call me arrogant, but I call it confidence. I had been up all night, not with anxiety about the event, but with excitement. I hadn't slept, and I was absolutely positive I was running on adrenaline. I looked around, not sure what to think of all these people. I wasn't sure if I should attempt to boast, or play it like I'm not as strong as actually am.

I was swimming second in the relay, and we had just been called to line up. I wished my teammates good luck, and I watched on with curiosity. I saw the first swimmer from each team take their starting position on the blocks. The starting beep sounded, and they were off. I cheered them on mentally, but on the outside it looked like I couldn't care less. I couldn't exactly tell if the first swimmer from my team was doing well or not, but I know I had to do better. Things were happening fast, faster than I supposed they would. "Prepare yourself" I thought, because this is a going to be a heck of a ride.

My time was approaching quickly, and I wasn't quite ready when it was my time. I got a lousy start, because my foot had slipped off the block and I entered the water in an awkward position. I inhaled what felt like a bucketful of water up my nose. I blew it out and kept swimming. I felt like I was doing good considering how lousy I had started off. I was approaching the end of my turn, and I knew I did okay. But how okay, only the time will tell. I touched the wall and shook the drops of water from my red hair.

Disappointed in herself for coming in two spots behind a medal in the first event she had partaken in, Katrina threw herself into the next one; a team effort for a medal as she had later found out. It was not to her liking, but perhaps she should have read the rules a little closer. She was not very happy to place her chance for victory in the hands of three others. Still, as it could not be avoided, she deigned to do her best, and encourage the others to do so as well. She was up first out of her group, so she primed her long legs and glanced back at the rest of the rabble. She had to give them an encouraging word before the beep sounded. "Hi everyone. Screw this up for me and I'll kick your collective asses into the next district."

There. That little pep talk ought to lift their spirits and make then feel good about each other. No more time to worry about them, she had to get her head in the game if she was going to do her sisters proud. This time, she promised herself that she was going to climb that podium and bring something home. Preferably Gold. The beep sounded and she launched herself forward with a fury.

With two medallists, including herself, stacked in her team for the 4x100 Freestyle competition, Quartz was feeling confident. After a round of swinging hugs and proud beams and a thousand different questions and voices throw at her, she'd hurriedly hung her medal around her father's neck for safekeeping and rushed away from the stands to get ready for her next event. Bursting with a mixture of shock and giddiness, all she wanted to do was get back in the pool again, especially after seeing her team standings. She'd be swimming third - enough time to let her team-mates get ahead, but not be the one who touches the wall last and decided whether her team would go away smiling, or go away disappointed.

With each stroke her team mates took, her nerves grew jumpier. A coach, or at least someone else from her District with a blue shirt on, ushered her to the diving platform to be ready to swim. Although her legs felt like glue and her arms like jelly, wondering whether she'd even be able to leave the stupid platform, the reminder of the crowd roaring with delight as she stepped up to take her bronze medal, and how ecstatic she had felt being up there. Victory in mind, she took her mark, and plunged into the water the second Villain had pressed his fingerprints to the poolside.

Originally, the Olympics had seemed like an entertaining idea to who sat at home watching nothing but reruns of the previously broadcasted Hunger Games. Darius had been slightly interested in watching something other than violence and bloodshed on live television, but what he hadn’t expected was to actually participate. ”Some of the events involve swimming! You’re a great swimmner, Darius, you could get a medal!” his sister had gleefully exclaimed to him as he exhaled a puff of smoke into the moist, summer air. The idea had seemed so ridiculous, he had sputtered with chuckles. ”I thought ya said my smokin’ would make my lungs too weak?”[/color] he had casually retorted. If Dahra complained about anything it was his terrible habits with the addicting little things. They plagued his system and contaminated him with an odd odor that made his younger sister grimace each time she passed by him. At that moment, though, her overwhelming enthusiasm compelled her to persuade him otherwise despite the disadvantage. ”That won’t happen until you’re older.”

Unfortunately, she had indeed coaxed him into joining the Olympics, and now, as he stood upon a platform waiting to dive into a pool and swim as if his life depended on it, he was regretting the foolish decision. Not only was he standing half-naked in front of hundreds of obnoxious spectators (including capitolites, who were as frightening and colorful as they appeared on television), but there were cameras inspecting him at every angle. There was no hiding anything from anyone at this point, not even his face, which was contorted into an irritated expression. He was about to participate in the only event he had signed up for: the 4x100 relay freestyle. An event that required the effort of a team rather than just himself. He hadn’t communicated with his teammates much; he didn’t really care about them. One of them was hot - a girl named Rowan, the first to dive headfirst into the pool, but he knew he couldn’t focus on trying to sleep with her during a day like this. This was his one and only event. He needed to focus if he didn’t want to look like a complete idiot (if such a thing was possible).

As soon as his third teammate was darting through the waters, Darius exhaled a large breath and prepared to replace him the moment his hand touched the wall.

Irene had known how to swim for years. Ever since she started out at the age of 2, her parents knew she would grow up to be quite the swimmer, and she did. Now, with the whole Panem Olympics thing going on, Irene had been thankful to take a break from everything in the training center apart from swimming. Irene had trained hard for this moment, and she was going to treasure it. She had to get a decent score. A decent score was all she wanted. She didn't care gold, silver or bronze, as long as she was rewarded with pride in her District. She wasn't like the ruthless competitors who were doing it for the medals. Irene just wanted her district to admire her for making them proud of District 4.

It seemed silly, really. After a gory Hunger Games had ended, a much more peaceful and fun event popped up out of the blue. Irene had enjoyed her training as she felt at ease when she swam, in the water, her hair flowing as the chlorine released it underneath the blurry blue world. Irene straightened the straps on her swimsuit and took a deep breath. After she had reached the Olympic park, she had immediately dressed into her swimsuit. It had a large gold '4' on it, indicating that District 4 were going for the gold. Irene traced the outline of her 4 delicately, feeling a tingly sensation run over her body. It made her shiver, and that was something she had done a lot today. Irene finally was led to the pool.

She had been that for a while.

Beep!

It was the sound that activated all the muscles in her body. Her heart thumped, her legs shook and her arms carried on moving, never stopping. The glistening liquid splashed, blocking the goggles, but Irene knew the direction. She swam, with all her heart, all her energy, and as she crossed the edge she immediately took off her goggles and rubbed her eyelids, then caught back her breath.

It wasn't a bad time, really. She had seen some worse, but she knew instantly she hadn't come first. But who had? Irene shrugged, and ran her fingers through the wet strands of her now dark hair. She had given it her all, and then she had been rewarded with a moderately good score. She sighed, catching back her breath, and wrapped a towel around herself. Water still dripped from her arms, legs, her swimsuit, and her hair. She dried herself. Today had been eventful, but at least it wasn't in The Hunger Games.

Receiving a silver medal in the 800m swim had done wonders for Villain's confidence, which had been faltering after his last place finish in the 100 free. The next event on his agenda was the 4 by 100 free relay, and much to his delight, his team included the guy who'd gotten gold in the event that Villain himself had botched and the chick who'd come in third, the career boy felt pretty good about their chances. Perhaps he should talk to them, introduce himself, make sure that they were on the same page, but nobody else seemed to be talking, so Villain stayed silent, too.

He was swimming second, right after Baitwell, the gold medal kid, and was surprised to see the fifteen-year-old getting smoked by everyone else. Maybe the pressure had gotten to his head, Villain reasoned, knowing that it may very well do the same to him. As soon as Baitwell hit the wall, Villain took off, knowing that he'd need to do his best to make up the ground that was lost. If he couldn't, he wasn't sure that his team had much of a chance.
