Gregor’s development throughout Metamorphosis is the most crucial by far of any character in the book. The first example from the text of his development is how Gregor adapts emotionally to his situation. The second and equally important piece of his evolution is the role he plays in his family members lives. The final change Gregor is forced to deal with throughout the book is how Gregor is forced to deal with having a human like thought process and the body of a bug to try and match these thoughts. Dealing with these complex issues all while having to deal with his new body is impossible to ask of anyone, especially the breadwinner of a hopeless family.
His emotional development is nonexistent and that’s why I think it is one of the most important things we should address. With everything else around him changing so incredibly I find it miraculous that his accepting bleak emotional state stays the same as when he was a hard working salesman. Upon receiving news that his father has lost his job and he is forced to drop what he is doing and begin supporting his family, even though Gregor may hate this fact he takes it with a grain of salt and continues on with his boring life while performing a new task, one which he neither dislikes nor enjoys.
Once in his debilitating state Gregor is forced to stay in his home even though he would prefer to be working and helping his family all he can. He went from supporting family member, to breadwinner, to beetle in a matter of days. He was a vital piece of the family puzzle in the first two stages and in the last he could disappear and it wouldn’t matter one bit. Helping the family all he could up until the point where his father lost his job was a very generous thing to do, he could do nothing like his sister Grete though and still be treated the same by his father however he chooses to try and outstand his sister. Once Mr. Samsa loses his job Gregor is ready to step up to the plate and try and prove his worth once more to his father. His dad is once again unmoved by the fact that Gregor can support a family in a moments notice. As a beetle his father is moved but not in the direction Gregor wanted, he was searching for a positive emotion to be evoked from something he’d done his entire life and a more drastic change in the opposite direction couldn’t have been put into effect.
Not only has Gregor disappointed his father but the family member he cares about the very most, Grete. She tried to assist him in anyway she could his entire life and now she wouldn’t even care for him. He was a man in a bug’s body; if anyone had the patience to deal with his issues they would have seen that. Grete was the only person who got even remotely close to seeing how much help he actually needed to continue living a fulfilling life. In the end everyone failed Gregor despite how much he excelled in both a business and family setting while a functioning member of both realms.
