Spitting Raptor — (Statue Garden) As a larger number of mutts than expected indicate, oftentimes the grotesquely Frankenstinian hybrid animals the Capitol sics on tributes are the result of a miscommunication, and the Spitting Raptor is a prime example. The Gamemaker who ordered this muttation had somehow envisioned a style of spitting lizard, hoping the scientists could resurrect some ancient creature like they did for the stegosaurus. The scientist, however, thought the Gamemaker was referring to the large birds of prey — a reasonable assumption, considering raptors’ fierce talons and predatory instinct — and simply borrowed glands from venom-spitting snakes, creating a dive-bombing, poisonous hunter bird.
20 hp. Poisonous. No food classification.
Ghull – (Tartarus; Styx; Siren Cliffs) While it does not closely resemble the “ghoul” it was modeled after, the Ghull has an taste for rotting flesh that rivals its folklore counterpart. This giant strain of seagull was bred over many years by not the Capitol, but actually by the scientists of District 6, who needed a safe and efficient disposal system for the numerous dead lab animals that their projects consume. The seagulls were already ferocious scavengers before vulture DNA was spliced in, creating the Ghull with an overwhelming urge for flesh — and not always that of necrotic carrion. Ghulls are especially drawn to blood of all kinds, regardless of whether it’s fresh or congealed or surrounding decaying flesh — their poisonous saliva encourages rapid necrosis so the birds can break down the food more easily. The good news is, like the seagull, while Ghull summon their fellows to join in the hunt if they spot a meal, they quickly turn on each other, fighting over the scraps. That doesn’t mean they aren’t a vicious foe, however; if one of these starts attacking you, remember to give the District 6 tributes an extra gash in thanks for being the source of these fiends.
Poisonous. No food classification. 15hp.
Silver Sirens — Credit to pthalorarity (Wine Dark Sea; Siren Cliffs) These seafaring demons were originally engineered to lure out any refugees that may be attempting an escape by sea. At the time people were being boated halfway to an offset island at night, and they would swim the rest of the way, guided to the island by the songs of whales that would pass through the waters. The Capitol caught wind of this little operation however, and in an act of cruelty, before bombing the island and it’s inhabitants, they created what would become commonly known as Silver Sirens. By integrating DNA of a beluga whale into a manta ray, they were able to give a species of ray the ability to create the same alluring songs. However, neither species was vicious enough to pose a threat to the swimming rebels, so further altercations needed to be made. By adding the venomous two-stinger tail of the whip-tailed stingray, the muttation was given a deadly weapon to wield. Additionally the creature was designed to exude more predatorial instincts to that it’s cousin, the shark. Given the already highly intellectual abilities of the manta ray, the engineered version of this creature made for a deadly encounter as it will purposefully use it’s soothing melodies to lure in it’s victims.
Poisonous. 25 hp. No food classification.
Sheepish – (Garden of Hesperides; Field of Lotus Flowers) A dastardly blend of fox and sheep DNA, the Sheepish are as sly, quiet, and elusive as a fox. They have a very thick, fluffy orange coat, with the tail, snout and ears of a fox protruding from the woolly mass. Their teeth are incredibly sharp, although the cunning animals conceal them quite well, looking innocent and cuddly. The Sheepish were attempted to be bred as a food source; however the far too little meat that they produced was far too gamey for the Capitol people. The Sheepish continued to be bred for their bright orange wool, which is prized by Capitol fashion designers.
20 hp. Not poisonous. No food classification.
Balloon Jellies – (Wine Dark Sea) These jellyfish are massive easily the size of a beanbag chair, and resembling a clear balloon filled with pale green jelly. For the most part, these giant jellyfish are mostly harmless — they feed off of zooplankton and do not actively engage in combat. If attacked, drifted in to, or otherwise provoked, however, these jellyfish can become deadly, and fast, by allowing some of their green inner fluid to seep out into the surrounding water. The core of the fish, the pale green goo, is the reason why these Balloon Jellies exist: the Capitol distills them for medicine — curing prostate cancer, to be precise. However, unrefined, the ooze is highly toxic, afflicting those that come in contact with a severe, if acute, poisoning. Balloon Jelly Toxin Syndrome causes excessive vomiting, which, in turn causes rapid dehydration, resetting the tribute's food and water counts to zero.
Poisonous. 8 hp. No food classification.
Sphinx – (Lotus Fields; Asphodel Meadows) Very much like its mythological counterpart, the Sphinx is a genetic fusion of lion, eagle, and ox DNA. This majestic creature was developed by the Capitol during the Dark Days for use as a tool in combat, a living weapon, so to speak. The majority of its genetic mix is that of a lion, giving it razor-sharp claws, vicious teeth, and graceful feline reflexes, making it a formidable predator with those traits alone. With the added trait of enough eagle DNA to give it huge, feathered wings and incredible eyesight, the Sphinx gains the advantage of flight at incredibly high speeds (up to 65 mph), allowing it to chase after its prey by air and track it with ease. Capitol scientists gave sphinxes extremely aggressive temperaments derived from the genetic code of male oxen, making them extremely territorial and easily provoked so that they would be absolutely ruthless in attacking the rebel soldiers they were created to destroy. As they grew practically impossible to control, however, the Sphinx ceased to be used for combat, and now prowls the arenas of the Hunger Games.
Not poisonous. 30hp. No food classification.
Pitfall Lizard – (Tartarus) Parts lizard, snake, and some trapdoor spider, this grotesque beast was originally designed to take out supply roads and other paths frequented by rebels. They were designed to dig networks of tunnels and caves under the specified area so it would collapse when enough weight was placed on it and perhaps kill the rebels involved with its lethal venom. However, these Lizards were deemed inefficient, given that their "traps" so to speak — nearly 25 feet deep, wide holes about two feet from the surface of the ground — did not always collapse, were not always dug in the right place, and were not always inhabited by a Pitfall Lizard to finish off any unfortunate being trapped. Like many of the muttations, the project was abandoned — however, few of the Lizards were actually found by the retrieval squads. These are completely inedible — even their bright orange eggs are poisonous. If you manage to get bitten, you have about three hours to live.
Poisonous. 30 hp. No Food Classification.
Hippocampi – (Styx; Wine Dark Sea; Siren Cliffs) The Hippocampi looks and acts just as its ancient counterpart - with the body of a horse and the tail of a fish, this muttation swims around the various waterways ready to use its forehooves to pound in any prey. The Hippocampi is a very adamant and aggressive force, and can't be taken down easy. The Capitol placed them along the oceans of Panem to stop anyone trying to escape with a nice hoove through their boat. Sinking sailors all around. They always travel alone.
18 hp. Not poisonous. Edible. Classified as large game.
Cerberus – (Styx; Field of Lotus Flowers; Garden of Hesperides) Although Hellhounds still wreak havoc, they do nothing in comparison to the great beast that is Cerberus. The Gamemakers though the Hellhounds were too common and needed to be vamped up. Thus the Cerberus was born. Twice the size of a normal Hellhound and with three vicious heads, this beast roams the land not looking for easy prey but large groups to tear apart. And with three heads, the dog can attack three times during the time it takes one Tribute to attack. Cerberus certainly is a force to be reckoned with.
40 hp. Not edible. Not poisonous.
Mormo – (Garden of Hesperides; Styx; Tartarus) A small, wraith-like flying cat that wears a cloak of mist. This mutt was originally developed as a pet for a wealthy Capitol resident, before it became much too creepy for her to handle. After turning the mutt over to the Gamemakers, they made a few tweaks, including adding a vein of poison to its kitty claws. This is a quiet mutt, nearly silent in its attacks, except for the occasional hiss.
8 hp. Edible. Poisonous. Classified as small game.
Harpies – (Siren Cliffs; Asphodel Meadows) The Capitol really outdid itself with this muttation. With the naked upper torso of a gorilla affixed to the legs and wings of a bird, this beast can be quite elegant. The Harpies were originally developed to be companions for older Capitol men. It took a few deaths before the muttation engineers realized that the Harpies were better off contained to an arena. There is a certain femininity to a Harpy’s movements, a sly batting of her eyelashes just before she attacks, a proud fluttering of her wings before she swoops in on her prey. But don't be fooled; this is one twitchy, screechy critter who loves to use her knife-like talons to scratch up her prey before she eats his innards.
15 hp. +5 HP against male tributes. Not edible. Not poisonous.
Mutt Contest Winners
Congratulations to all the winners of the 62nd Mutt Contest! Below you will find the additions to our mythified arena.
Owl of Athena – credit to Rook (Styx; Statue Garden) Originally named Password Owls, these mutts were designed by the Capitol to guard checkpoints - Only people with the right answers could enter safe-houses or pass gates. Obviously people on the side of the Captiol would know the word to pass, whilst it would be more difficult for the enemy. The Owl of Athena is a bird that is twice the size of a usual owl and has talons that rival an eagle's. It is able to speak, or transmit words from a superior power. It appreciates the knowledge of Tributes, and lays down a series of questions or riddles to prove worth. If answered incorrectly, the Owl of Athena will frenzy, attacking anything near it.
12 hp. Edible. Not poisonous. Classified as small game.
Scyther – credit to Cass (Asphodel Meadows; Lotus Field) This mutt is rather small, they hunt in packs of around two or three at a time, they prefer to live in open areas, where they can burrow under the ground. The perfect climate for them would be the Asphofdel Meadows as well as the Lotus field. They are around the size of a young a mole, but from the size the comparison stops. They have scales like a serpant, and two short arms that jutt out from their sides that help propel them forwards when they are digging and travelling on the land, they have no eyes and instead to large open nostrils on their forehead. They were created by the Capitolites at first to be sent beneath the district 11 crops. At first before the rebellion they were simply used to help the crops grow, removing unwanted pests from beneath the soil, and helping the crops flourish. Once the rebellion began they were transformed to destroy the crops and on occasions to even attack citizens. Becuase of their long sharp teeth and able bodies digging through the soil to find prey was simple for them, besides who would expect them to jump out and at you from right under your feet?
6 HP each. Edible. Not poisonous. Classified as small game.
Empusae – credit to Lyrics (Statue Garden) Winged monkeys with sharp talons, originally created to scare District 7 rebels by swooping from the trees. They can't fly very high or for a prolonged time, but they've got a wicked screech that can be heard within a 2-kilometre radius. They're usually not that aggressive, but their hard skin is almost impenetrable and those claws can cause fatal lacerations. They have a main breeding ground in the statue garden in the Underworld, and if you venture too close, they become very territorial. Their main form of attack is swooping, which leaves it's victims with terrible head injuries.
15 hp. Edible. Not poisonous. Classified as large game.
Stymphalain – credit to Arx!! (Siren Cliffs; Wine Dark Sea) A cross between and albatross, a porcupine, and an armadillo, this species of bird was something the people of the Capitol hoped would help them terrorize rebels quite easily. These large birds did not only eat all of the rebels' food supply, they also ate them alive and poisoned much of their fields with their toxic waste. This bird has highly armored skin (from the armadillo) and the ability to shoot sharp feathers (from the porcupine) and the regular flying capabilities of the albatross. This bird was completely killed off after the Dark Days, but the Capitol kept the DNA. Later, when ideas for the 62nd games were being tossed around, they decided to use the extinct species.
