Bala Guppy, District 4

And it's beginning to get to me
That I know more of the stars and sea
Than I do with what’s in your head…

Bala Guppy is a teen from District Four. His life hasn’t been too terrible—his parents divorced when he was young, but other than that he’s been able to live rather comfortably. He lives with his father on a fishing boat, and trains as a career, both for the physical fitness and for his desire to prove himself. Why, you ask? Because Bala Guppy is just unsure of himself in general! He doesn’t understand most things—his mother has no tolerance for him, and his father is a bizarre mix of stock phrases and fishing knowledge—so he turns to his friends for advice. And, being that he’s sixteen, will run away from himself when confronted with real problems. How does he figure out his sexuality? What does he want out of life? What does love feel like? Bala Guppy has only the most childish visions of such things… it’s a good thing then that the sea is so big…
So who wants to swim in his school?
[/color]Those in District Four that would like to ‘swim’ with Bala Guppy should choose from the list below as to how their character might fit into the storyline. Note that there may be multiple sharks that torment Bala, just as he might run into more than his fair share of cuttlefish. I’m hoping that I can develop plotlines with different characters that might intersect. Think of this as more freeform. I’m hoping to have plenty of adventures with Bala to ultimately mold him into a full & complete character.
The Shark: This type of person would be an antagonist to Bala, and would most likely bully him for any number of reasons. Whether it was for his smaller stature, his sexuality, or just that his parents are separated and poor, this type of person would find some reason to be cruel to Bala.
The Cuttlefish: This type of person would be a flirt and possible love interest for Bala. As a boy still exploring his sexuality, he’s aching to go further and further. He’s also pretty easily swayed to do new things, and do them too quickly, just don’t expect that he’ll fall in love forever. For Bala knows there are plenty of fish in the sea, and just as these characters might tempt him one day, he might not even bat an eye at them the next.
The Shrimp: Even as short as Bala is, he’s not exactly a runt. He’s been training as a career for some time, which has given him muscle, even for his shorter height. This would be a younger character that he looks after, maybe even protects. They might play childish games, go diving together, or have harmless fun. He might protect him from his own shark!
The Electric Eel : Slippery and disgusting, the eel is a mysterious type of character that doesn’t talk much. Instead it seems to strike without warning… perhaps it’s addicted to morphling, perhaps it was to use Bala for some mysterious purpose, or he just has a scheme that he was to use against Bala. Make no mistake about it, the eel is a character that is neither entirely good or bad. The eel is just out for itself!
The Salmon : Is there anyone more attractive than the salmon? Beautiful, majestic, and sought after—Bala Guppy has a deep longing for this character. Usually older and unsuspecting or blind to the fact that Bala Guppy adores them. They do not run in the same social circles, as Bala does not come from wealth and is also fixated on becoming a career. May laugh in his face if Bala ever works up the courage to reveal how he really feels.
The Flounder: A complete and total mess. When the flounder is supposed to be there at two thirty in the afternoon, they show up at four. When they were supposed to bring the essentials, they don’t bring anything at all. Yet despite being a complete and utter failure at most things, the flounder is a lovable partner and friend to Bala. Sometimes joined at the hip, they just seem to understand one another better than anyone else.
This plot is not first come, first serve. It will also not be limited, so if someone is deemed a shark, you can still apply to be one, too! Just let me know where your character falls, and the idea that you had in mind! If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
