It was hot again. Not as hot as it had been the month before, but still hot enough to swim in the sea. And that was exactly what Ashlinn was going to do today. Wearing her blue bikini, a white dress and her hair high up in a knot on her head, the young girl made her way towards the beach. The sun burned on her pale skin and the sand tickled her toes, making Ashlinn feel good. Thoughts and worries left her head like balloons in the wind as Ashlinn pulled the elastic out of her hair. Slowly her bare feet began to move quicker. Left, right, left, right, faster, faster! The wind blowed her dark hair towards all sides, her eyes shone and sparkled as bright blue as the sea in front of her.
A strand of her hair slapped Ashlinn across her face as her left foot first toutched the cool seawater. Ashlinn tasted the salt on her lips, now curling in a smile. The water splashed up to chesthight, until Ashlinn finally slowed down. Her hair tasted salty and hung semi-wet around her pale shoulders. It made her think of the days she used to come here with her dad. Days she wasn't allowed to go to the beach on her own, because she'd drown. Her father always used to tell her she looked like a mermaid. Like a mermaid who'd just grew legs to run with. Slowly Ashlinn walked a bit further into the sea. The cool water made her legs, belly, chest and finally her head dissappear. A few seconds Ashlinn was under water. A few seconds her hair flowed around her like seaweed. A few seconds Ashlinn was weightless, cooled down and everything was quiet.
Then her head appeared above the surface again, gasping for breath. At that moment Ashlinn realised she was still wearing her white dress, which was now soaking wet. Too bad, but it was an old dress anyway. Smiling, Ashlinn walked out of the sea and entered land again. Once again, Ashlinn thought of her father, and the way he always used to say 'let's enter land, mermaid'. Slowly Ashlinn sat down on the beach and pulled her knees up with her hand, putting her arms around them. Maybe, company could be nice for now.
