As I walked, my bare feet would sink into the warm, soft sand. It felt wonderful running over my small feet. I walked back and forth on the beach with a soft smile on my face. I found a softer spot in the sand and lied down. I put my arms behind my head and closed my eyes, still being able to see the light of the sun through my eye lids. I can hear the waves crashing ashore and the shouts of joy coming from other children. Most of them must be about my age, meaning they aren't in the reaping yet.
A smile crosses my face once more. I'm only ten years old, but unlike most ten year olds in the district, I'm not free of worry. I'm an orphan. My older brother, Kingston, who is 17, has been taking care of my 4 year old brother, Jake and I. Each year, Kingston has to spend his free time getting food or whatever he needs to in order to help us all stay alive. I figure that the job must be very difficult. He likes to train sometimes and I know that he's doing it because he wants to hurt the other careers, but he denies it. He says he's only doing it so that he can defend us and himself.
All of a sudden I hear something that makes me jerk straight up from where I am lying down in the warm sand. It's a scream, and not just any scream. I would recognize the scream no matter what. It was Jake! He wasn't able to swim yet and Kingston was supposed to be helping him. I noticed that Jake had been abandoned in the water and Kingston was fighting with a boy on the shore. I immediately ran to the water and swam out to Jake. When I looked up, he was already in someone's arms. They had saved his life!
"Thank you so much! Jake, are you okay?" I said, thanking my brother's savior and then figuring out Jake's current condition. He nods and spits a bit of water out of his mouth. The person who saved Jake swims to shore with the small boy in their arms. I embrace Jake in a hug and once again thank the person who saved him. I smile and Jake leans his head on my shoulder. "Thank you! I'm Emily, and this is my brother Jake. My older brother, Kingston was supposed to be helping him swim but he got into a fight. Sometimes he can be so irresponsable!" I say.
