A camping trip... Kinda (open)

Chase Pack

Chase was going camping... Well sorta camping. Really Chase was walking into the woods about five feet from his house. He knew it didn't really count as camping, but he didn't care. It wasn't that he was scared of going off into the woods; it was that he felt lazy today, and that dark clouds were rolling in which meant rain was sure to follow. Mostly the second reason though. Chase actually went in the forest often. He would walk for miles just to explore the forest, and because he hated being stuck at home.

As he packed for his "Camping" trip he could hear the wind picking up outside. He wanted to get into the forest soon, or else the rain would come and he'd have a miserable time setting up shelter. In his rush he decided to only pack necessities. By necessities he meant a knife, water bottle, berries, rain jacket, and backpack. He packed these things quickly and left the house around 6:15. He looked at the sky, and where usually he would have seen a beautiful sunset filled with shades of reds and purples, he saw dark ominous clouds creeping towards him.

This didn't bother him though. He kept walking at his usual casual pace into the woods. Once he entered the forest time slipped away from him. He walked whistling a happy tune for what felt like a few minutes. He thought he'd only walked a few hundred yards, but when he turned around there was no sign of home, and it was getting darker by the second. He decided that he needed shelter soon, or else he'd be sleeping under the stars, or tonight clouds.

He immediately went to work selecting a tree with a wide trunk. He then walked until he found a sizable branch the wind had blown from a tree. He dragged the branch along the ground, which made a very loud noise. He wished he could do this more quietly, but he was strong enough to lift the massive branch. Finally he got it to the tree and leaned it against the trunk diagonally. The he pulled some smaller branches off the surrounding trees. He needed one more branch, but he'd exhausted his resources of downed branches. He saw a nice looking one on a tree nearby. He pulled out his knife and started sawing away with the serrated end. He was almost through when the blade slipped resulting in a deep gash on his fore arm. He broke the branch off out of anger and put it on the shelter. He then through some leaves on it to keep water from coming through the cracks.

He crawled into the shelter and went about treating his wound. It was bleeding a lot, but he wasn't worried about it. He poured water on it to try and clean it, then cut a sleeve off his shirt to tie above the cut to stop the bleeding. He was about to start tying it when he heard footsteps outside. They were too big to be an animal, so he knew it was a human. He peeped through a crack in his shelter and saw an outline of a person walking towards him.

It wasn't that Chase was a paranoid person, but people in the woods at night usually didn't have good intentions. As he looked he could tell the person was quite a bit smaller than him. He decided it was worth the risk after all he was armed. He crawled out of the shelter. He stood up and looked at the figure. He made himself look as big as possible, and used his most in charge voice to say, "Who are you? What do you want." His eyes were locked on the figure, and his hand grew sweaty on the hilt of the knife.

Calypso was out that night to do some thinking she was having yet another night in the woods. She was sitting in a tree when she heared a noise, maybe it's an animal and i'll have enough luck to kill it she thought and grabed her knife and headed out towards the sound. As she got closer she found out it was a boy slightly older than her. As she approached he spoke " Who are you? What do you want". Calypso was scared "calm down you are trained,well sort off you can hunt if you need to"She mutterd under her breath and then repleide " It's none of your buisness on whoi am or what i am doing here,but if you must know i am Calypso from district 1 and I couldn't sleep so i did some wandering and hoped maybe to also get a little hunting done," she replied trying to keep her voice calm.

As the figure got closer he could see it was a girl. a small girl who appeared to be a few years younger than he. He couldn't help but wonder what a girl so small was doing in the woods at night. After all, not everyone could be trusted. That's why Chase had been so on edge when he saw her. He'd run into more than one bandit in the woods, and sure didn't want to meet another.

As she spoke he listened intently to what she said. How far had he gone, surely he hadn't wandered all the way to District one. That was several days walk away, but why was she here, how had she gotten here. He liked her name though. Calypso was the name of a person who was in a book he'd read. To him the name was mysterious and filled with adventure.

He tried hard not to laugh at the girls response to his question. She was definitely brave, because surely she knew that if he had been a psycho killer or something that he could kill her in the blink of an eye. Come to think of it he probably did look like a serial killer with a bloody piece of cloth in one hand and a gash on his arm. That and the blood stained knife in his hand.

He had respect for this girl, so far from home and so brave. This had been a less then ideal meeting. He looked at the sky, and saw that the light was fading fast. He doubted they could hunt tonight, and he wondered if she could even find her way back to her shelter. He decided to be friendly to her after this harsh meeting. He threw his knife into the ground and walked towards her slowly. Once he reached her he extended his non-bloody arm towards her and said, "Hi, I'm Chase and I'm from District 6. Its a little late to be hunting, in fact it's getting pretty dark out. If you want you can stay here with me tonight and tomorrow I can help you hunt." He hoped he didn't sound too forward, especially with good hunting partners as rare as they are.

The boy didn't attack witch is a good sign she thought. Could she trust him she didn't know,he was on the verge of laughing at her reply, she didn't care if he did she would just laugh along. The one thing she learned from her hard life is never take dirt from anybody no matter who they think they are. The boy looked dangerous as far as she could tell he was pretty badly cut up.

Calypso listened to the boys reply, this kind of kindness she wasn't used to and couldn't tell if it was fake. Chase, she thought interesting name and he is from district 6 how far could she have wandered not that far they must be somewhere in the middle.She saw he was right it was getting dark,but stealth was usually on her side.

Chase dropped his knife and Calypso took hers out of her pocket sleeve and dropped it as well then smiled and took his hand. " I'm glad that you didn't attack or i didn't stand a chance. I always wondered what life would be like in another district, maybe you could tell me a little about district 6. I am also very thankful for your kindness no one was ever so nice to me not even my familie."Calypso said still smiling one of her rare smiles.

It was a good sign that she didn't immediately run in the other direction from him. If he'd been in her position he probably would've run from himself before he even had a chance to say anything. He knew that he should be watching this girl closely, but all he could think about was his arm. He needed to finish tying the sleeve around it to stop the bleeding. He knew this wasn't a deadly cut and that the bleeding would probably stop on its own, but he just wanted it to stop because it was getting annoying.

He listened to what she was saying and tried to think of something interesting about district 6. Most people would name the industry, but science was a much too boring answer. What made hist District special...Other than him. Chase was a little too cocky for his own good sometimes. It had gotten him into trouble in the past, and he still didn't learn from it. He wasn't a slow learner just really stubborn. What made his family special? Other than the fact that his mother went "missing" there was nothing really remarkable about it. He knew she hadn't gone missing, she had been murdered, not just murdered but executed. The killer was obvious to everyone in District 6. The Capitol.

"I'll answer your question, if you'll come over here so that I can stop this bleeding. You kind of caught me in the middle of something." He said and started leading her over to the shelter. He sat down on a log in front of it, and picked up the shirt sleeve he'd laid down earlier. He then began tying the knot he knew so well. He'd tied it many time, and he didn't think that it had a real name. It's entire point was to control the bleeding of a minor cut, while not completely cutting off circulation to the limb it was tied to.

When he was finished with the knot, he turned to her to answer her question, and he had the perfect description."District 6 is a paradise. The weather is nice and the people are amazing. We study science all day long and I mean literally all day. The shortest shift is 12 hours. The best part about the District though is that if you don't do exactly what the Capitol tells you, or discover exactly what they want you to discover, or give credit of your discovery to the Capitol, then one day you will mysteriously go missing and your body never found." He could feel the emotion building in his voice at the final part. It was kind of a touchy subject with him. "So whats life like in District one?" He asked the girl.

Calypso didn't mean to interupt.She felt guilty about it,but barly maneged to get even an opps out of her mouth. They boy said that if she went to him he would answer her quistion about district 6. She wasn't so sure this was a good idea,but cuirosity took over her and she went over to where he was sitting. He started to clean his wounds,calypso wondered how he got them,but didn't want to ask and offend him,so she merly took a glance at his arm hoping he would volinteer information. After some time she gave up hope and deceided maybe to ask later.

Chase described district 6 it sounded like paradise to her. She also felt a little bit of envy,because his life was so much better than hers. Once he started to get to the end of his talking she could feel the tension rising and calypso's eyes fell. She new she was the only one that has parents that don't like her for who she is,who don't like her at all. Then he asked the dreaded qustien... Whats life in district 1 like. She laughed to herself she knew that she would give a pretty shocking answer because everybody expects district 1 to be heaven,never have to suffer,no one is poor and only she could change there mind.

"Well"she started"what i'm about to tell you will be not what you expect. Everyone expects one to be heaven that no one has to suffer and that no one there is poor even in the poor side of town. I can't tell you how it is for everybody else,but for me it is hell,plain hell. I want to be a career,but my parents are against this for reasons that I don't even know and then deceided that I was a useless old rag and that my pretty twin sister was the angel because she also hated the games like my parents. They treated me like dirt I still got food little though,but I have to sleep in the basement. In the streets there are always fights breaking out beetween the careers and most end bloody. At school I am the odd person that everybody ignores exept my best friend. You can say that my percpection is differint as you would think I feel like I live in 12. I come out here in the woods to get away from all that,and to be who I want to be not who everybody thinks I am." with the last sentences She started to cry she couldn't take it she couldn't play the tough little girl from district one anymore she had to let it out. Beetween tears she managed to talk again" so how did you get all bloodied up?" she said with her eyes red from crying.
