Abstract Olivia Aiden Eines (Livy) is a seventeen year-old girl from District Eight of Panem, daughter of Brandon and Marie Eines. She often frequents the District Eight library after school hours, though whether she uses the library for social or academic purposes was not concluded in previous research. The purpose of this paper was to understand Livy and her tendency to deviate from the standard textile worker mentality. Using previous research done on Livy along with forms and documents collected from various sources, we examined her past, her appearance, and her personality to construct a character type. This character type was then used to support previous conclusions that the District Eight library had influenced the subject’s way of thinking. |
Introduction Olivia Aiden Eines (Livy) belongs to the species Homo sapiens, synthesized and nurtured in vivo. Livy is the daughter of Brandon Eines and Marie Lumir Eines, and the elder of two. In a previous study done by the author, Livy was born during a heat wave in the year of the Forty-Sixth Hunger Games. As her parents’ first child, they raised the child closely despite the amount of time they had to put in for work.1 However, once they had their second child, Livy was often neglected as more time was spent on her little brother, Nicholas, who is five years her junior. The study concluded that Livy’s tension with her family originated from the birth of Nicholas. Livy succeeded in school and was able to devote most of her free time to studying, because her parents made sure she did not have to work in a textile factory until she was done with school. A trend was observed between Livy’s success in school and the attention she received from her parents. In a document that was found in Livy’s notebook, a detailed plan of what was needed to be accomplished in order to obtain her parents’ attention was hastily scrawled along with checkmarks next to successful experiments.2 Records from the local library identified Livy as a consistent patron starting from her twelfth year.3 While her specific interest in science articles is not known, the library’s records show that there are some articles catalogued. Researchers from the Capitol have previously concluded that the library was the source of her deviance from the population of textile workers and merchants.4 Further research has been pursued to determine whether this conclusion is false. However, preliminary research has shown that Livy’s exposure to the library has influenced her life during her five years of patronage. |
Materials and Methods Constructing the Physical Using District Eight’s database, Livy was identified as the subject of interest. A collection of data from forms submitted by the subject and her family was used, along with personal accounts that had been taken down by researchers, to construct a physical representation of the subject. Constructing the Internal To construct a personality type for the subject, experiments on friendships, family relationships, and personal relationships were done. Individuals were introduced into her life, starting from her family, to monitor her reactions. From these reactions, results were organized by relation to the subject and significance of event. Synthesis of the Physical and Internal A complete character profile was created based on the results from the previous sections. |
Results Constructing the Physical Olivia Eines (Livy) was found to have straight, dark brown hair that was yearly chopped by her busy, but well-intended mother. Her eyes were wider than her mother’s and brother’s but smaller than her father’s, and the irises were close to a dark brown color (p < 0.01 in pigmentation). Short, straight, and thin eyelashes framed her eyes. Her eyebrows are straight and thin with almost no curve. Her low-set cheekbones were inherited from her mother, but her dark complexion is her father’s. Bags under her eyes were explained by the little amount of sleep she received during nights (x ≤ 4 hours). Compared to the rest of her family, her face is more angular with a pointed chin. In a physical exam done at 16 years, scarring was found on her arms and legs but the scars checked off as accidents that occurred in her youth. Her height was measured at 5-feet-2-inches with an accompanying weight of 105 pounds. Her frame was categorized as “small” with very little muscle or fat on her bones (x < 25% body fat). She has reported problems with her vision but has not been provided any corrective lenses. The subject can often be found in school clothes as her time spent is at school and the local library, which she does not change for. Constructing the Internal This first relationship we explored was her relationship with her family members. Livy was found to be distant with her parents and sibling. There was very limited interaction between her and the rest of her family starting her seventh year, and a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in interaction occurred in her twelfth year. Her parents stated that they “love [their] daughter” but do not know how to be closer with her. Her brother did not comment on their relationship. No records were found of Livy paying attention to family matters. The next set of relationships examined was her relationships with her friends. The subject did not declare many to be her close friends (x < 5) and labeled most of the people she interacted with as acquaintances. Her closest non-familial relationships are probably with those in the District Eight library, but she does not communicate with them often in the library or outside. Her tendency to maintain schedules has provided little time for “fun”.2 She has not expressed indication that she would prefer it to be any other way. There has been no romantic relationships catalogued nor has she shown any interest for them. Therefore, we could not observe her reactions to this aspect. Livy has shown a tendency for privacy and solitude. She does not speak much to other people, but has been found to communicate with herself as she thinks aloud. Her manner of speech is direct, using as few words as possible, and she is blunt with her words. In some accounts from those who know her, they have described her to be very closed off and discouraging to talk to. |
