Age: 17
Gender: Male
District/Area: District 5
Appearance:
Privilege is relatively plain to look at, however he is not unattractive, merely regular. He has short brown hair that he likes to spike up and off his face in strict lines (in the Capital fashion) and brown eyes. His teeth, fortunately very well shaped, are well cared for, and so shine bright against the pale skin that tans warmly in the summer months.Personality:
It cannot, for example, buy his health, and so Privilege tries to take good care of his body, taking advantage of the private gym in his parents' house to lift the occasional weight or run on the treadmill. As such, he has a relatively nice body, although he is very conscious of the weight he tends to put on around his hips when his exercise frequency drops and his food intake increases. A bit of a yo-yo dieter, Privilege's weight fluctuates monthly between about 65 and 75 kgs- never what one would describe as fat, but often bigger than he, vain as he is, might like.
Privilege enjoys dressing up very much. He likes to put on nice, expensive clothing and he follows the fashions in the Capital that he sees on television, oblivious to the regular get up of most of the District 5 citizens. He is rarely seen in something as pedestrian as a t-shirt and shorts, and usually wears dress shirts and designer jackets and often, fashionable sunglasses.
Despite being otherwise confidant about his appearance, Privilege is a bit ashamed of the fact that he is only five foot five, making him very much on the shorter side of the scale. He makes up for this by wearing shoes that have been slightly altered to make him a little bit taller, only by an inch or two. If anyone pulls him up on this, he tries to convince them that it is fashionable for men to wear platformed shoes in the Capital.
Privilege is not an incredibly bright boy, in fact, he is often described as vain, ditzy and even silly, speaking without really thinking about whether what he's saying is an intelligent thought. Relatively book-smart, as in, good at school subjects like mathematics, Privilege's grades do not reflect his actual common sense, which is lacking.History:
Born into a very wealthy family, Privilege is quite blind to the actual state of the districts, especially the poorer one. He realises that the districts are not as wealthy as the Capital, but doesn't resent being from District 5 as he is surrounded by new wealth. He is ignorant to the fact that people hate the Capital, assuming that most everybody loves it as he does, and when he does encounter hostility about the Capital, he assumes people are jealous of his family supposedly being from there.
Privilege has all the best intentions in the world, and is, genuinely, a good person, however his density and ignorance would often raise judgment about his actions- for example, his extravagant lifestyle despite people living in horrific conditions elsewhere in his district. As such, his actions and comments often come across as arrogance, as he is a foolishly confidant boy, when really, it is just ignorance.
Martius Principaux was born Capper Rools in one of the outlying villages of District 5. His mother died in childbirth, and his father became a drunkard, who blamed his mother's death on the poor child. Capper put up with the abuse until he was seventeen, when he ran away from home. He was caught by peacekeepers trying to escape from the District, but then escaped from them (they were incompetent, and only border guards, so since he was running back into the District, they never bothered to chase him) and ran to the other side of the District. He met a woman named Aurelia, a wanderer the same age as he, who would later become his wife and they lived underground for a year.Codeword: odair
As winter approached and they began to fear freezing to death in the particularly harsh winter, Capper and Aurelia devised a plan to break into a country farmhouse that had been disused for years and overlooked by the government. Inside, they found the building completely empty- and the deeds to the house and the considerable amount of useless (because it had not been looked after) land around it.
Considering they'd been stealing from the people of District 5 without anyone finding out for a whole year, the two decided to push their luck when they realised Aurelia. They created their own home in the farmhouse, and when it was discovered (while digging an irrigation system so they could possibly grow some crops and make a decent living) that there was oil on the land, they realised they were about to join the neauveau-riche of the District in the oil rush.
However, they didn't have any legal claim to the land, except that they'd found the deeds to the house. Figuring the best way to avoid any suspicion (in case someone realised they were technically criminals) they took the deeds into the city hall and claimed that Capper was Martian Principaux, the name on the deed, and applied for a marriage to Aurelia who, 'renamed' herself Aurelianisita. They claimed they were Capital citizens who had left the capital out of choice, to 'try something new'. Since they mayor had never heard of a citizen leaving out of choice, he decided to not ask any questions and turn a blind eye, thinking it was unorthodox hoping that if the Capital were allowing emigration, that the wealth of the citizens arriving in the District would bring would boost the economy and standard of living in the District. The 'Principauxs' claimed that the land had been bought in the Capital without their having seen it. Since they land had been abandoned for so long (nearly thirty five years) there was no record of the original owners, so the Mayor could not dispute it.
Unfortunately, Aurelianisita lost her first baby, but she and her new husband, who could not believe their luck, worked hard to build the oil refinery that now stands on the land they first claimed. They bought buildings in the main District centre town and made them into apartments to house the workers on the refineries, earning rent off them. They invested in small businesses and bought more land as they became richer. Very soon, they were one of the wealthiest couples in the District. They paid for a beautiful house to be built near the Victor's Village.
The Mayor at the time, seeing their quick success, ordered an inquiry into the couple, and upon realising who they actually were and that they had no real claim to the land they were earning some of their money off of, personally invited them to his office and threatened to send them to jail- but since he was corrupt and greedy, he was able to be bribed into keeping their secret. He was even able to be paid off into not revealing them after he was replaced with a new mayor.
The Principauxs businesses flourished, When they were in their forties, they unexpectedly fell pregnant. Aurelianisita gave birth to Privilege (naming him something like the Capital citizens might have done) and the couple told their son the same lies they told everyone else in the city- that he was descended from the Capital. Especially as he grew older, and they realised he was not very bright, they ensured the secret was kept, in case he accidentally told someone who would expose them the truth. In order to keep him happy, they raised him by giving him the most privileged life possible in the district. The amount of other nouveau-riche families in the area meant they could get away with raising him without exposing him to the tough upbringing they had had in their own youths.
