I grin to myself as I stand holding my skateboard. The warm sun beats down on my back. I'm clutching my awesome looking skateboard in my left hand. It's decorated with greenish yellow and a purple skull decoration with an axe and sword criss-crossing it. It's just one of the many boards I've stolen bought. Some of them I've decorated myself but I decided to get this one. Lately it's been getting colder since the summer has ended but I still like to skate no matter what the whether is, even if it's raining. To be a good skater you needs guts and determination and I've got both. That's my motto and I follow it to the last letter. What kind of skater stays inside all day just because of the whether? Not me, hell no.

So what am I doing today? I'm going to try and skate on the roof tops. I've done it before but I ended up breaking a leg, they aren't super high, they're just high enough that I'd probably break something if I fell. And I'm definitely going to try it, I have a sly grin on my face as slowly skate through the streets of district one. I'm wearing a track suit, track suit bottom and my helmet, knee pads, elbow pads and some gloves. Like I said it's getting pretty cold at this time of the year and it's not fun skating while I'm shivering like a wounded animal. So while I'm properly covered and warm I hop off my board.

I run up to the top of the rooftops, I'm ready, I grin to myself. I'm not high but I'm not low either. None of the peacekeepers have noticed me yet, perfect. I hop on my skateboard and start to skate, first I do an ollie, getting my board off the ground and jumping over a can. I land and start riding again. Just keep going, it won't be like last time. I keep riding, almost off the roof, a small gap between the roof I am on and the next roof. I continue riding towards it, trying to go as fast as I can.

I keep riding, I keep riding, and then suddenly I ollie again, right in the air. Right over the gap, I land on the next roof. I then proceed to kick flip to celebrate but I've done it. I don't know how but I didn't fall down and break my leg this time. "I wonder who saw that..." I say to myself with a smile. A feeling of elation in my chest. I can feel the happiness flowing out of me but I'm not done. I have to keep going until I either get tired or fall which will be a while. I then hop back on my board and proceed to start riding again.

Painted outside the window of my bedroom is the beginning of a new day, the warm sun bringing happy children out of hiding as they bound across the District, preparing for another day of tedious training. Yet in my eyes, the yellow glow emanating from the ball of hope in the sky casts a sickening shadow over my home, my mind finding yet another way to warp something so pretty and harmless into something that should be feared.

The sounds of our luxurious life that we lead do not reach my ears as I lie on my bed, staring up at the ceiling far above my head. The simple elegance of the white-painted room casts a sterile feeling around the abode, for even though less is more, simplicity is beauty, (hadn’t I heard it all before, every waking moment of my life?) the inescapable feeling that I am slowly drowning in a place of such wonder is crushing me each day I remain here. Wasting my days away. If only there was something I could be good at. In a place where everyone excels at something, where there will always be someone who is better than you, living each day in the shadows becomes lonely. Not for the first time this morning, I feel my fingers faintly trace the flawless skin pulsing over my forearm. No bruises, bumps, scars, breaks, fractures or imperfections lie here. To search my whole body for a single scratch would prove fruitless, for there is nothing but glowing white skin lining my body.

And I hate it.

A swift movement of my right hand to the bedside table provides me with a small dagger. Mum always wished I would keep them out of sight, so that she wouldn’t need to see them when she cleaned my room as I trained. The blade gleams dangerously, reflected in my deep brown eyes, and before my mind can tell me to ‘Stop!’ I send the dagger flying across the room, coming to a halt only when it reaches the wall across from me. Stuck in place, the small hole previously located there grows bigger as the blade finds the same place I hit yesterday. And the day before. And the day before that… And maybe that’s all I needed to convince myself that I wasn’t completely worthless.

Even if that was a lie. Even if I knew it was a lie.

My heartbeat slows, returning back to normal, and the world starts once again, unfrozen in time. The silk pyjamas feel light across my skin, and as I peel myself away from the bed sheets and walk towards the closet, the clothes softly kiss my bare skin. Slowly trailing my hand through the hanging garments, I absent-mindedly choose an outfit. I would not train until the afternoon, today. The perfect excuse for wasting a day away. I descend down the flight of stairs, the dress I wear flowing behind me, casting vibrant colours around the house. Enchanting.

There’s no destination in mind as I make my way through the crowd of people, milling in the middle of the District. My mind wanders too often for the rational thoughts to keep up with, constantly being pushed aside as I find myself dreaming of a better time, a better day, a better life than the glorious one already provided for me. The looks of disgust and snickers of pettiness from the surrounding residents don’t reach my ears – even when their jeers are targeted at me – for my ears have filled with the first of many desires that I will long for today.

Right now, all I want is to be free.

I let my feet guide me against my own will, taking me to a place that is not unfamiliar, but makes the faint hairs lining my arms stand on edge. Anticipation floods through my blood, with the hope that maybe today will be the day I finally learn to spread my wings and manage to fly away, breaking the golden chains that tie me down to the land where you can have everything except the main thing you want.

An escape. Freedom. To be alone, even when being lonely is all you’ve come to know.

Venturing into an abandoned house, long forgotten, I make my way up the stairs to a rotting window, hoping to gaze out at the world around me in silence.

It soon becomes obvious that my desire to be alone will not be fulfilled today.

A boy – or perhaps the correct term would be idiot – stands on the roof of a house not too far away from me, skateboard in hand, his smug attitude apparent through his facial expressions. Ugh. I try not to pay attention to him, for I’d always been told to never gawk, or stare or give away any hints of interest to someone you know you could never care about. And I don’t care about him – not in the slightest. It would be glorious to see him fall; however, I am to be disappointed once again. Miraculously, the boy manages to stay on his skateboard. A fluke. Yet I find my nose scrunching up in disgust all the same.

Even the scrawniest of District 1’s filth find something in their meaningless lives to be better than me at.

Not wanting to waste my time on such an insignificant soul, I begin to walk away, trying not to let my annoyance shine through the unbroken barrier that the priceless jewels adorning my body provide.

Yet there’s a part of me that yearns for a friend, a companion – a part of me that wishes the boy would see me and stop me from walking away, returning to the lonely life I simply can’t escape.

I'm still ecstatic from making the jump. I’m still balanced on my skateboard and do a 360. It feels so good to finally make that jump. When you’re like me and you’ve been trying for a while to achieve something but either A) don’t have enough confidence to do it or B) try it constantly and always fail you’d definitely be ecstatic if you made it, no matter what it is. In this case it’s making the skateboard jump. I do another ollie on the spot just to show off a little bit more to whoever is watching, after all when you can do the stuff I can do you feel obliged to do some showing off on a skateboard.


Out the corner of my eye I see a girl looking at me, she doesn’t seem very impressed. She has pale skin and blonde hair, and she’s not impressed by my show... I’m so going to chance that

I then get off my skateboard and call out to her. “Hey! Did you see that? It was awesome wasn’t it?!” I call out. However she then suddenly goes away, stops looking from the window as if she’s repulsed by me. I’m still going to get her impressed, it’s like a mission now.


I hold my skateboard in my hand and jump from one rooftop to the one next to hers. I don’t want to see stalky so I don’t go on her window but I still want to get her attention one day. I don’t know why I feel so obliged to impress her, I guess I don’t want to have done all that for nothing. Anyway back to getting her attention somehow. I don’t want to let someone see my cool tricks and then just walk away like that, they need to want to see more!


Skating is one of the only things I’m good at. I want people to be impressed by my work, but not my parents, they never approve of anything I do. Still, I want someone to go ‘Oh did you see Peresei yesterday? Yea he did some awesome trick on his skateboard. Man he’s so cool.’ It’s what I want and I’m determined for it to happen, To be a good skater you need guts and determination. That’s my motto and it will always be my motto.

Back to the task at hand. I’m near her house on the roof, the peacekeepers either don’t care or haven’t seen me yet, either way I don’t mind. “Hey are you still there?!” I call out. I want to get her attention, no one else saw my cool jump except for her and I want to know her opinion on it.

If she ends up coming out I would ask "So erm. Did you see my jump? It was cool huh?" I know this seems dumb. I did all that just to get her opinion on my jump. Oh man please say you loved it.[/color][/size]

Backing away from the window, I begin to turn back into the shelter of the old house. It once was ours, before my parents felt the need to live bigger, better lives. it was a place I didn’t belong, filled with dust and crawling insects. Yet I loved coming here, to reflect, relax and think of ways to meet the desires I longed for so very much.

A girl of such proper status and upbringing could never be caught dead in an abandoned haunted house. It would soon turn into the laughing stock of the District, or worse, a place of parties, drinking and other reckless ways to pass time. When the Careers weren’t training or being spoilt, they would party, and it was no doubt a run-down mansion would make the perfect getaway in the middle of solitary peacefulness. Maybe it would be better to live somewhere else, where I wasn’t spoilt and rich. The world would stop watching what I would do, where I would walk, how I would act… I could be free.

Although it isn’t my home any longer, I won’t let that happen. Too many happy memories were created here – they could not be tarnished or cheapened in any way possible.

With the best interest of the dwelling in mind, and not thinking about myself for once, (though I really am still thinking about myself, so that the house does not crumble into ruins and I can still escape from time to time) I prepare to leave and return home, to a place so unfamiliar and dull that nothing in the world could make it better. It was time to go. For now.

Unfortunately, at that moment, the idiot who had been skateboarding moments earlier was calling out nonsense words that sounded ugly and hoarse in his mouth. Nothing like the tinkling bells of my parents’ voices. To stop and turn around would indefinitely ensue a conversation. The best thing to do was to continue walking, pretending nothing had happened.

Yet the calls continued.

“Hey are you still there?!” Desperation. A plea for attention, a cry for admiration. Sounds all too familiar to the ears of a wealthy teenager from District 1. Perhaps if he was cuter I would be more than happy to turn around and strike a conversation, even when talking wasn’t my thing at all. But all I had seen in him moments earlier was a poor boy wasting his days away, trying to find a way to make himself feel better. He did this through the one thing he was good at.

Perhaps I’m just jealous that he has something to be happy about, and I don’t. That even though I have everything, I have nothing. It made me all the more curious.

With a laboured sigh and roll of my eyes, I slowly turn around and place my hands gently on the windowsill. Flakes of paint fall off and land on the wooden floorboards, yet I do not spare a moment to brush off the white crumbs dotting my fair hands, for he is there, on the roof, and I am falling backwards over my dress, looking out at him from my place on the ground. Charming. Embarrassment wells up inside of me, and I try to get up and leave quickly without another word. Yet when I try to stand, the dress’ gauzy fabric refuses to come to attention, caught in a wedge in the floor. I cannot rip this dress. Automatically I freeze, preferring to face certain embarrassment than return home to a raging mother with a ‘careless daughter that can’t even look after a dress for longer than an hour!’ Both situations would be horrifyingly embarrassing. Yet as the boy looks in through the window, eyes full of an emotion I cannot distinguish, I hold his gaze and swallow the lump in my throat.I manage to choke out a single word. ‘Don’t.’

She looks sort of uninterested which annoys me slightly. I mean I worked hard on that jump and all, every single time I tried to make that jump I ended up with a broken limb and now that I finally make it the only person who hasn't seen it doesn't seem to care! Okay maybe I am a little bit of a show off but this is more than just my own personal pride (okay maybe it is a little bit). But that's not the whole point. Skating is a passion for me it's one of the only things I'm actually good at. I'm not a career, I'm not a braniac, I'm just me, I'm just an average person.

But I don't want to be an average person.

I want to be well known for something, anything. Skating just sort of came. I look at the girl standing before me for a moment. I'm gripping the first grip able thing I can find and I'm hanging on for dear life. Wouldn't that be a disgusting way to die? Fell off a roof because I was trying to talk to someone. Everyone fears death, even I fear it, I just fear death much less than others. That much no one can deny. I look straight at her, she seems like one of those wealthy people, just like my mom and dad except I hate them.

As she tries to walk her dress seems to get caught on something. However I am too late to warn her that her dress appears to be caught on something because within two seconds she tumbles to the floor, falling on her back and she's looking up at me. I can see the embarrassment welling up inside her, I would surely be embarrassed if I tripped over something in front of something, especially a piece of my own clothing -despite the fact I seem to find myself on concrete all the time, with or without a broken bone- well she wasn't hurt or anything I guess so I guess it's not that bad.

Although the surprise is obvious on my face; there is no amusement, there is no sympathy either (I don't usually feel sympathy for people), there is only surprise at her falling. She seemed like one of those kids who were perfectly composed and always held their heads up high, never seemed to trip. They always seemed so perfect and as if their lives were perfect.

Those kinds of people annoyed me, but maybe on the inside I simply envied them, my life is far from perfect. I guess she isn't like one of those people, but this only makes me want to help her. "Oh I-I'm sorry I- I say but then she interrupts what I am going to say. "Don't." I am confused, did she think I was going to enter her home? I'm not a trespasser, did she think I was going to steal something? I was wealthy enough so I didn't need to steal something, I was just going to help her out but obviously she didn't want any help from me. Was she a really proud person?

Or maybe she was just strong.

"Don't what? I wasn't going to climb through the window if that's what you're thinking. I just thought you needed the help that's all." I explain to her, I am being completely honest, no malicious intentions, I was being completely honest. "I'm sorry if you thought I was doing something wrong or anything, I just- I just-"

And then I felt my nerve starting to slip away.

‘Delphine, come downstairs. Don’t you want to see the snow?’

Excited Child of six years old eagerly bounds down the steep staircase, met at the bottom by a loving mother with gentle hands and a handsome father with a kind smile. Child’s face is bright pink from the sudden change in weather, eyes glittering happily as the grin on her face enlarges with each breath of anticipation.

Together they stand by the duchess to light several lanterns. The flickering lights make Child gasp in surprise before her eyes become transfixed on the dancing flames moments later. Guided by steady hands, the family waltz over to the balcony. By the window, Child watches the falling snowflakes outside land lightly on the ground.

‘So beautiful. So magical.’ A soft breath of air riding on the gentle Winter wind.

Twelve years on, and I am in the exact same place I stood with my parents so long ago. Too old for watching snowflakes anymore, the tradition was left in the dust many years ago. It was not a decision I had made, for if it was, things would be very different today.

The first flakes begin their slow descent to the ground, and a wave of nostalgia hits me hard, pinning me helplessly to the floor. I must get up, but I could not move without tearing the dress. Too proud to ask for help, I avert my eyes from the boy, hoping to avoid the silent question hanging in the air.

Don’t what?

There were many things I didn’t want.

I did not want him to help me.

I did not want him to speak to me.

I did not want him to pity me.

I did not want him to enter the house I grew up in.

I did not want him to tarnish invaluable memories created in this sacred place.

I did not want him to ruin the day any more than it already had been.

Though perhaps they are all, in some way, lies, for none of these thoughts are vocalised as he continues to fill the silence with his rambling words.

Most of all, I did not want to scare the boy away.

The tiniest of snowflakes falls gently on the decaying windowsill, disappearing as quickly as it had formed. My heart fills instantly, the growing emotions inside of me an all-too familiar reminder of what is to come next. There is a desire to be young once more – a desire to fill the emptiness in my heart with happiness, splendour and magic.

From my place on the ground, everything looked beautiful.

Looking for solitude that had never been destined to come, one wish had already been overlooked today. It was essential for this desire to be met. I had one simple request.

There's that strange moment of silence, that moment known as 'the awkward silence.' My voice trailed away, I start to feel snowflakes slowly begin to drop on my head, on the window sill and on my body. However as soon as the snow flakes make contact with my skin my body heat melts them nearly instantly, I take a moment to look around to see the small snowflakes falling, dropping around me. It's quite surprising if I'm completely honest but it's all so beautiful.

There's still that awkward moment of silence where none of us seem to know what to say. I'm simply staring at her with my eyes quite worried and my brain like mush, not knowing what to do or how to do it. I was just ready to leave, I'm cold, it's starting to snow and I can feel my hands beginning to go a little bit numb, it's almost as if my hands are frozen to my skateboard and my fingers refuse to budge. And then words escape her lips that I never expected to hear at this moment in time.

‘Will you watch the snow with me?’

That sentence causes confusion to cloud my already numb mind. It was certainly a... strange request. When I first saw her I already saw her as one of the types of people who just don't like to speak much or one of those rich snobs who looked down on people like me. A lot of people look down on me, is she one of those people? It makes me wonder, why would she want to spend time with me? I don't even know her name, she doesn't even know my name. I look her in the eyes and kind of stumble over my next words which I find quite surprising, I never imagined that I, Peresei Rider, would actually stumble over his words, I who take such a laid back approach to live in general.

I never really pegged myself as being nervous talking to attractive girls such as this one. But she just seems to make me slightly nervous, she makes my words stumble out of my mouth in stages.

"Well, erm sure. Could I at least get your name first?" I ask. It's both accepting but still asking for her name.

"My name's Peresei, Peresei Rider." I say, introducing myself officially.

‘Delphine.’

It was a surprise he didn’t know the name already.

I watch him slowly – warily – climb through the window, as if I’m the dangerous one. I cannot describe the feeling, the longing in that moment, but it requires no words. I wished to watch the snow fall with somebody.

Silly little Delphine, chasing her desires that always seem just out of her reach.

Well. Not today.

With the edge of my dress still caught in a nook of the floorboards, I make my best attempt to move to the side slightly without him noticing my predicament. There is just enough room for him to sit next to me – that is, of course, if he doesn’t decide to leave while he still has the chance. I look at him curiously, the name still ringing in my ears like the chiming grandfather clock standing tall and proud back home, the way Mum and Dad always wanted me to – the way I could never quite get right.

Peresei. Foreign and unfamiliar, the name is bittersweet in my mind. It echoes unsteadily, bouncing around the emptiness, trying to fill the spaces that do not hold even the faintest trace of a lasting friendship. Could I ever be friends with Peresei Rider? Could I ever have a companion to call on when the occasion rose? Could I ever come close to someone who wasn’t constantly inside of my head?

Could he ever stand me as a friend?

Of course he couldn’t.

It was always my fault.

It is with this conclusion that I am met with my next desire – do not become Peresei Rider’s friend.

And who was I to disappoint? I’m sick of running around in circles, breaking promises to myself, slipping away from reality and constantly living in my dream land where nobody can ever come close to me. He wouldn't miss me. Nobody ever did.

But it didn’t have to happen just yet.
