I could feel myself start to shake as I tried to be strong and ignore them but it was like my world was getting smaller and their words were getting louder threatening to push me over and crack my world in half. I took a deep breath and tried to ignore the voices that wouldn’t disappear. I couldn’t take it anymore; it wasn’t fair that I had to live my life with voices that taunted me. I felt like screaming and giving into them but I couldn’t, I had to think of my sister and remember who I am and what I don’t want to become. My ragged breath started to become short gasps as I fought with all my strength to push them away and out of my mind. I could feel beads of sweat form on my brow as I concentrated on anything apart from the voices that were on the verge of taking control over my life. I couldn’t let that happen. “Adrian do it, stealing that beautiful necklace district square could spare you a lot of grief in the future.” That annoying voice was back, echoing around my head. Sometimes I believed they were mimics of my thoughts that I just try to bury deep within my heart, bring all my fears forth to haunt me during my waking hours. I could feel my feet shuffling along the ground, making the dust rise around my figure as I walked forward towards the district square. The sun was hot and beating down on my body making my already warm blood boil within me. I didn’t want to do, I knew it was wrong but some part of me believed it would shut up those voices and another part of me, the reckless part, loved the thought of rule breaking and the thought that I might get into trouble. I could hear a small part of my brain screaming out for me to stop this nonsense but that was soon snuffed out and replaced with the strong urge for me to grab that necklace and take off. I soon could see the district square. May people milled around looking at the different things people could offer them and I felt my heart start to race as I moved closer and closer. Sometimes, noise was almost like silence, if you thought about it.

Take it from me; I’ve experienced silence enough to know what I’m talking about. Sometimes it’s like this dense fog that just hangs over everything, ringing in your ears and making you squirm in your seat and dart your eyes around and hold your breath until someone breaks it with an awkward attempt at a conversation, or an abrupt ahem. That’s the bad kind. And then there’s the good kind, when silence is like a big winter blanket, gifting you with this sense of sanctuary and making time stop for just a while so you can breathe in, breathe out for a moment, or listen to the music that’s playing in your head, or just think about things you don’t have time to think about when the world is full of sound.

The noise in the square was almost like the good kind of silence. Even though it was actually loud, all the hustle and bustle and usual district square ruckus mixed into a hum that was easy to tune out. It faded into the background like the chirps of the crickets outside my window at night, or the birds’ songs in the morning, or heavy rain on the roof. That kind of noise is just as good for thinking as silence, in my opinion, if not better. Today I was enjoying it, sitting on the edge of the sidewalk and watching the people go about their business, wondering what they were here for, what they were doing later, what they were thinking. Occasionally, I’d see some little kids running around, and I’d smile at them, even though they didn’t notice or say anything to me.

My mother had sent me to pick up some eggs, but I’d figured she wouldn’t mind too much if I took my time getting home. I walked past the stands that held the merchants’ products and a glimmer from the jewelry stand caught my eye. Man, I bet my mom would like to have one of those bracelets, or a necklace to match the ring my dad had given her when they were married. I knew I’d never be able to afford to buy luxury items like jewelry with the sad amount of money I’d accumulated from various jobs I was always getting fired from quitting, and even if I did I’d probably get scolded when I got home for buying something that expensive when it wasn’t something I absolutely needed. Still, it didn’t hurt to look.

I noticed an older black-haired boy looking at the same necklace that I was, and something inside me felt an urge to strike up a conversation about it. ”It’s really pretty, huh?” I said, smiling. ”Too bad I’d never be able to afford anything like that.”

Suddenly I was stopped in my tracks by the sound of a voice and I dropped my hand back down to my side quickly. ”It’s really pretty, huh?” the voice said as I swirled around to see a boy smiling up at me, “Too bad I’d never be able to afford anything like that.” I looked wistfully back at the necklace and then to the boy who stood in front of me. “Yeah I would die to have something so expensive to sell and get money for myself and my sister.” I replied my voice was polite and I tried not to show any annoyance. All I wanted to do was take the necklace and run. I shook my head to rid those thoughts and stared at the boy who had brown hair and looked around the age of sixteen. I couldn’t steal this necklace, what was wrong with me? Ah those stupid voices who wouldn’t shut up and leave me alone. I was curious to why this boy had made conversation with me, there’s nothing special about me. I gave him one of my insane smiles and asked, “hey why don’t we do something fun. I need to do something in my life apart from mopping around. I need to be free and I want you to join me.” I know it sounds silly but this boy seemed friendly and I needed a companion just to you know do something fun instead of doing the usual. Hopefully this boy wasn’t one who was a goody to shoes and would spoil my fun. No I needed someone entertaining and funny. Well if he says yes then would see how fun he really was. I had never been the kind of person to talk to strangers. Not because I’m afraid of putting myself in danger, but I mean, I’m not much of a social butterfly in the first place, even though I’ve always tried to be friendly to everyone I meet. It’s amazing how some people—my older brother, Colin, for instance—can walk right up to someone they’ve never met and start asking them questions and sharing stories as if they’ve known each other for years. But talking to people just doesn’t come naturally to me like it does for some, and any conversation I’m engaged in is usually frequented by awkward pauses as I think of something to say next, something that won’t make me seem like a total idiot. So I’m struck with a sense of wonder, almost, when I begin chatting so naturally with the boy in front of me, and when he replies so easily that he would love to have a necklace like that to sell for money. I’m in a conversation now, and I think I like it. Maybe I can even make a friend; I don’t have many of them, just enough to count on my fingers.

“Hey why don’t we do something fun?” my new acquaintance asks, a smile spreading across his face. “I need to do something in my life apart from mopping around. I need to be free and I want you to join me.” I grinned back at him. Mom’s request for eggs was far from my consciousness in that moment; I had spoken to a stranger, and made a friend, and now he wanted me to join him somewhere. I couldn’t believe all of that had happened. (Maybe the gods of conversation are watching over me or something). I could definitely go for some fun right about now, and I was excited to see what he had in mind. All I had to do was answer, and that wasn’t so hard because this time I didn’t have to think of what to say.

”Lead the way,” I told him, smiling. Then I realized that I hadn’t introduced myself yet, and that I probably should if I wanted to learn my new friend’s name as well. ”My name’s Meriweather, by the way. But you can call me Meri, for short.”
