Small waves crashing on the shore, seagulls flying high above my head, everything is calm, eerily calm on the beach where I sit on my one day off, watching my little sister Sunshine collect seashells, if I didn't know any better I'd swear this was paradise. I've been working twelve hour shifts all week, so this day couldn't have come any sooner. I left the house this morning because of the horrible sound coming from my father's room, the man's snoring became intolerable to such and extent that I decided to give up sleeping and go to the beach, of course Sunshine came with, it is my turn to entertain her. My father and I take turns on Sunday's since there's no school on Sundays.
We're not too far from where my mother and I used to work when she was still alive, thinking about her give me a lump in my throat which I shake off quickly, Sunshine picks up on my moods quickly and I don't want to upset her. With my left hand I dig into the warm sand next to me, picking up a handful at a time and letting it slip, almost grain by grain, through my finger. I enjoy the rare silence, there's almost always people around me, it was while I was searching for silence when I came across this part of the beach.
"Nemmie!" I hear sunshine call from about ten feet away from me, I'm not worried though, she doesn't look or sound distressed, she actually seems excited about something she has found. "I'm coming Sunny." I say as I get up, closing the gap between us with a swift jog, getting down on my knees next to her as soon as I do and look down at her 'treasure'. "What the..." I whisper, but I don't finish my sentence, I merely stare down at the golden coin in disbelieve. "It's shiny Nemmie." she points out as she points at it, bouncing slightly our of excitement. She's never seen money like this and honestly neither, the curreny I'm used to is silver and bronze coins which I get paid with at the end of each week. 'This must belong to one of the peacekeepers' I think, panic-stricken, a chill running down my spine. Are we being watched? Is this a trap?
I look around frantically but but there's no one in sight, "Well pick it up ten Sunnikins." I say hesitantly and watch her little hand wrap around the coin. I know I can't risk her being caught with it, even at the young age of three she'd be punished, but I don't take it away from her immediately either deciding not to make a scene rather I let her look at it and watch as she turns it around with her miniature finger all the while I keep a look out for movement and try to figure out what I should do with it. I could turn it in to a peacekeeper, but what good would that do? I won't be awarded and the money would go to someone who doesn't really need it. 'I'll hold on to it for a while, see if anyone's looking for it.' I decide and the second I do I ask her "May I keep that save for you sunny?" all the time kneeling beside her, keeping my voice steady and friendly.
As she hands the coin to me, I realize I have to tell her to keep it a secret, knowing that if I don't she definitely will, she's way too young to understand what the consequences might turn out to be, heck she doesn't even know what the coin is used for. I decide to do it later, she's bound to bring it up again. "Let's build a sand castle..." I say, noticing she looks a little disappointed, to which she replies "A big one Nemmie." once again smiling.
