Part of me still blames my mother and father for leaving me like this. They should’ve tried harder, I should’ve listened more, but family isn’t supposed to leave and yet here I am wandering through the forest without anyone but the birds for company. I could feel the chill of the summer nights starting to wane and figured I’d have to find a District soon; the winters in the wild were harder to bear and this would only be my second one without the band of other I had called my family[/i][/color].

Last winter I barely made it through, saved for the scraps of food I could rummage up and the kindness of strangers who I happened to run into. Everyone was nice when they got what they wanted, and all I could give was warmth between the sheets. This year though I had a different plan. I’d sneak into a District and find a way to live there for the winter, maybe as a castaway, maybe even convince some old man to let me stay in his home. It couldn’t be that hard, with a smile and a bat of the eyes most men would bend backwards to let me spend time with them.

I could hear the calls and whistles of the birds around me and my steps quickened. Soon the ground would be filled with the crunch of the leaves and a blanket of pine needles. Autumn was beautiful but the ragged backpack stuffed with a few clothes and the poncho around my shoulders wouldn’t be enough for the nights. My eyes scanned around me as the bird sounds dulled and I moved behind the nearest tree. Normally the birds only calmed in the presence of a predator and out here that could be anything: mutt, human, animal…and instinctively I looked for footholds on the tree to start my way up. Quietly as a mouse I began my climb wanting to get out of the way before any of those things could find me. The bark dug into my slender fingers and small palms as I reached several feet up before seeing the dark hair of someone headed towards me. Sucking in my breath I tried to be still but my arms wrapped around the trunk would give me away and I prayed to whatever there was out there that it wasn’t a peacekeeper coming to take me down.

AHHH SHIT! My whole body freezes, fear climbing though my limbs. Never had I ever seen anything like it. It had eight eyes and all of them were focused on me. I couldn’t help it, a scream filled my lips as my eyes darted from one eyes to the next, something weird flashing with in them. I bet it thought I was its next meal. Well I had seen something like it, sorry I lied, I have actually seen many of these eight legged creatures- and each time the same thing happens. My body freezes, and I can’t move- no matter how much I beg for my legs to run, they stay. Frozen in spot. It was like these creatures had some hold over me, like when they looked at me they knew, really knew, the type of fear that they cause- and they used it against me!

Now it stood a few feet above me, its fangs slashing wildly. The scream that had ripped through me earlier only intensifies. Oh my, oh my, oh my, this was the end, the actual end. Then it falls to the ground. Its legs moving wildly as it scattered away lurking towards the shoads of the crack in my bedroom wall. I watch as its tiny figure disappears, leaving me staring at the place where it had hung only a mere few moments ago. Somehow I remind myself to breathe and suddenly I am crouched on the floor my hands holding myself tightly as my chest rises and falls in a rapid motion. My chest still beats wildly in my chest. I close my eyes only to have images of the beast flash wildly on the inside of my eyelids. I groan. The sound escaping my lips sounding almost like a wounded animal.

I hated them. I hated their beady little black eyes. Their long lanky hairy legs. There pincers that clicked intensely. Just everything about them sent shivers through my spine. Spiders. One of the few things that could make me stop In my tracks. One of the few things that petrified me. Even just thinking about them made me feel cold to the bone. Pull it together Teddy. Come on. This is not how to act. You are a grown man. Pull your shit together. Hastily I climb to my feet, my eyes looking everywhere apart from the corner in which the spider had retreated to. Satisfied I head towards the door that would lead me out of this dust coated place and into the free world of the forest.

The forest. The only place where I truly felt free. Free from my thoughts, free from my past… free from the memories that were hidden deep within me. A smile slips onto my thin lips as I enter one of the more older paths that would lead me though the damp forest. It was not often that I found a place like the old hut behind me to stay in for the night. It was a rare luxury actually, but I didn’t feel comfortable there, not after that encounter just a few moments ago anyway. Pushing the thoughts of the spider to the back of my mind I continue walking down the path, my hands brushing along the bark of the trees as I wandered past. I have always admire the forest and the way it lived, the way it growed, the way it survived. It needed no one, no one but itself. Unlike me. Humans, like myself, were dependent on other human beings if we wanted to survive that’s why we created communities. Places where everyone put their assorted talents together to function as a group: to survive, but out here, on my own, I barely did survive. I needed people, I needed someone to help me stay warm, for company- to keep my sanity. How long had it been since I had come across another soul in this deserted forest? How long have I had to live with just my thoughts and memories?

I was not sure, but I knew that it had been a long time- a very long time.

My feet barely made a sound, my eyes searching the area around me. I had to keep alert, peacekeepers wandered these woods occasionally, looking for people like myself. They hated wanderers, people who had left their districts; they wanted them to pay, to send them away to the detention centre, or worse. I was not like the others though. I had been born in this forest raised here. I knew fuck all about the capitol- or the districts. All I knew was what my parents had bothered to tell me before they ditched and the rumors I had heard from pass-byers over the years.

Suddenly I freeze in my path. My eyes attracted to a rather odd coloured tree trunk. A frown slips onto my forehead as I hastily move closer my eyes glued to the odd things. It wasn’t until I was a few feet away that I realised that it wasn’t an odd tree, rather an odd girl. One who clung to the tree like a child my cling to their mother. Instantly a smile slips onto my lips as I look up at the blonde girl, my eyes alight with amusement, “I hope I am not interrupting anything but you know, I don’t think the tree feels the same way about you. Yes you’re a pretty girl and all, but I think this tree is more into the more sturdy type, ones that could spread its seed and produce more little baby trees.” My voice is light as I stare up at the girl, my hand cradled on my hips. “Here let me help you down.” I reach my hands up ready to help pull the girl down, but freeze, waiting for the girls permission. “If you want my help, that is.”
