Diamonds. Thousands upon thousands of sweet shimmering specks prancing upon the sea’s surface stretched for miles winking provocatively up towards the sinking sun. Serenity could be found upon any beach within these hours, the hours where the sky burnt magnificent colours and was set ablaze with fresh salmon streaks and oranges so bright the sun seemed to melt into their loving embrace. Dusk could bring peace to anyone, the faint whispers caught upon the wind brought inwards to coo calming lullabies into the ears of those willing to listen, the harmonic brush of the waves stroking the shore with immeasurable affection, all of it emitted a hypnotic illusion, a state of perpetual yet fleeting bliss. However no matter the hour, no matter the day, the month or year its mystical allurement failed to offer the district four girl any solace. The siren songs carried along the salted breeze brought no comfort and that cold familiar touch from the ocean’s apologetic brush brought no forgiveness as her indifferent emerald eyes cast their nonchalant stare towards the horizon.

Coral had been upon the beach for what seemed like an eternity, her hands rough and worn red from their work and a small yet admirable collection of completed nets crumpled at her side. Most, she assumed, preferred to do their work somewhere more sociable, perhaps surrounded by siblings in their homes or nestled in the centre of some immensely frustrating group of peers somewhere she herself would rather avoid until her last breath. Her preference however would forever stay beside the sea, placed upon the sand where the rough grains warmed by sympathetic rays could press consolingly against her skin with the ocean’s murmurs for comfort and the breeze as a constant companion.

Boredom had always hassled her busied mind, while her fingers worked obsessively on her creations the voices protesting in her thoughts demanded a moments rest, a moment to indulge in more favoured endeavors. For hours she dismissed the urge to escape her duties, to forget the job she’d been given to do and walk, walk forever and then when that was over walk for a moment longer. As time progressed however it became impossible to ignore that incessant nagging, that compulsion racing through her veins and swelling in the breadth of her chest. Within an instant she found herself weighing down the nets with a few rocks and then in a fraction of an instant her bare feet plunged into the golden grains, her legs throwing her forwards as her figure launched itself across the shore, one foot after the other with nothing but the wind and the waves snapping at her heels.

Endurance was a speciality and Coral in her mind could have ran for days, perhaps even conquered the whole beach several times over and then several more for good measure, but there were other obstacles, other difficulties and in this case it was her own careless footing. After nothing more than twenty minutes the tip of her foot caught the back of her heel and in a split second her entire frame was thrown to the ground leaving her leg grazed by an overturned log and a set of greatly offended seashells. The pain was delayed but the blood was instant, that quick thick flowing substance that oozed from the open wound curling around her calf however received nothing more than a restrained groan and a frustrated glare with her brows furrowed and her mouth melted into a displeased frown. “Dammit!”

[/size]he sand beneath my feet was something that struck me as familiar. My toes wiggled in the dry grains, sinking deeper into their unknown depths. A smile plays at the edge of my lips, threatening to slip onto my face- and turn it from something that is intimidating, to something that is somewhat welcoming, somewhat gentle. Hastily I push the eager smile away, leaving my lips turned down slightly at the corners. Smiling wasn’t really my thing- not unless I was with a lady, then smiling almost seemed to be my only thing. But unlike all the other men who just go wandering around at night, seeking the body of another, to please them for a few hours… I wandered around at night, seeking comfort- even if I didn’t say it- from the people who surrounded me.

My fingers curl around the neck of the bottle in my hands. The rough, but ever so smooth, surface of the glass sprinkled with little droplets of water. I tug the bottle up to my face, the lip resting lightly on my mouth. I tip the bottle backwards and wait in anticipation for the liquid of fire to slip into my mouth, and slither down my waiting throat. It only takes a moment before my mouth is filled with fire- a fire that makes my body warm from the inside out. In a swift gulp, I swallow the fire letting it trail down my throat until I am left with nothing but a warm fuzzy feeling. This time when the smile plays at my lips- I let it out; I let it slip onto my waiting lips.

Brining the bottle away from my lips I sigh, using the sleeve of my shirt to clean the edges of my lips. My hand falls to my side, the liquid that remained in the bottle sloshing around, taking a few moments to settle. Then I take off, my foot uprooting itself from the sand, my body moving forwards as I move to leave behind the civilised district, as I head towards the place where mankind has strayed- leaving it pristine and beautiful. With one last glance behind me I leave it behind with the memories which were embedded deep within the buildings and lives of those who called District four there home.

The sand beneath my feet slowly became damper as I headed deeper and deeper into the pristine environment of the beaches shores. My eyes lingers on the breaking waves as the sound of crashing fills my ears. The wind howled in the air as the waves broke- none to gentle- over the sandy shore. I smile, small bit of seaweed scattered here and there along the shore line, home to creatures big and small. The smile of my lips grows, the beauty of the ocean, of the san, of the crashing waves, filling me until I felt as though I was not Jev Falls any longer, but a stranger- a stranger who seemed to be filled with happiness, and a sense of peace that almost seemed unbreakable.

Once again I bring the bottle of fire to my lips, letting the liquid slip down my throat and into my body. I let the bottle fall to my side once again, my coming in contact with the salty water of the ocean. The waves wash over my feet before being dragged out once again into the dark surging liquid, before being spat back out. It was interesting, interesting to watch as the liquid danced back and forth in a rhythm that was steady but uneven at the same time. It was a process that always caught my attention, something that I could become lost in for hours upon hours…

Pulling my gaze away from the surging mass of liquid my eyes search the shore only to find the crouched figure of a girl. A frown replaces my smile as I start to move towards her, letting my bottle of fire slip from my fingers. As I get closer I can see blotches of scarlet forming around her, slipping into the gains of sand turning them from a white to a deep red. I take a quick glance at the girls face, which was crewed up in pain. Then without even thinking I face up to her side, my hands coming to a rest on her shoulders, [/color]“are you okay?” I asked, my eyes searching her body, looking for the injury. It only takes me a moment to see the gushing wound on her leg. “Here, lie back,” I say gently, trying to guide her shoulders so that she was past a sitting position and lying on her back on the sandy ground. But I don’t push her, I wait for her to move- I didn’t know this girl, and I didn’t want her to think I was some creep, so I just encourage her to lie back, my voice soothing- gentle even. For a moment I take a step back, my mind flying. Since when had I become such a softy?

But with a shrug I turn back to the girl, concentrating on her, rather than my own issues.

Aching, the reach of my impressively sturdy hand stretches downwards to assess the damage, keen to analyze the self-inflicted wound from my own condemning clumsiness. Without a doubt it looked worse than it felt, the pain was mediocre when compared with the flush of red seeping from the parted seams of split flesh. It was amusing, well a little, everyone always worried about someone else hurting them, about being assaulted or attacked or something of the like. All I had to worry about was myself, there was no question about it that I was the most dangerous thing on the planet when it came to my own health and safety. Ironic, surly. Probing, the tips of my fingers keenly brushed around the outline, the intensity of my stare boring into the injury with skeptical consideration. Surly it wouldn’t need stitches. That would just be embarrassing. What was this stupid out of place log doing in the middle of the beach anyways? More importantly how dense had I been to miss the charred piece of timbre blatantly sticking out from a mass of darkening gold.

Naturally every ounce of my attention had been diverted, multi-tasking wasn’t something I was blessed with unless a great amount of effort was thrown into the attempt, and thus the sound of approaching footsteps went unheard, the oncoming person lost between the call of the sea and whip of the wind. The instant the sensation of someone’s hands melted against my skin instinct propelled me forwards, half stumbling half tripping into an awkward sitting position on the other side of the log, “You trying to give me a heart attack?!” Fright caused the words to pounce thoughtlessly from between the pink lines of my faintly tinged blue lips, the sound higher than usual with uncensored panic before a moment or two was taken to slip back into a state of calmness, “Yep, I’m okay, I sit on the beach and bleed all the time, it’s sort of a hobby.”

Sarcasm was a natural defence, it always had been since before I could remember. Reef had always jested at it before his death, saying I was too cruel sometimes, too offensive. But that had never stopped me and now there was no Reef to even persuade me to question it, so there was no chance of the mechanism ever falling short of my sharp tongue. “Woah, woah woah. I definitely don’t know you well enough to be on my back.” It was half said playfully, half said in seriousness as a questionable glance was thrown up towards my apparent saviour. He was handsome no doubt about that.. but then wasn’t half of the district? We were just a gene pool of excellence. I never really payed much attention to that though. To people that is. People in general were just too irritating for acknowledgment. Blinking defiantly a sideways glance cast my sights to the sun, its sinking outline drawing a dramatized sigh as progressing darkness crept in from the west devouring what remained of the evening’s beauty. “It just needs a bit of salt, that’s all.” Snapping the bright, enveloping green of my eyes back upon the stranger a slight smirk would twitch at the corners of my mouth and etch faint dimples into the faintly bronzed pallet of my cheeks before an attempt at standing was made.

Naturally it was a struggle, with one leg unable to touch the ground the other stood shakily on its lonesome, both hands clenched productively into fists while a choice between hopping and crawling spun into the forefront of my mind. Within an instant however the loss of blood provoked a surge of dizziness and nausea to drift mindlessly over my body, the sensation causing a prolonged groan to roll across my tongue and a glare to be thrown towards the culprit of the whole situation now painted grotesquely with colour of my blood “Stupidoversized twig.”

[/size]ll my life I have been this hard ass man, one who never took any crap, one who liked to think he could take on the world and still come out fighting. I haven’t had an easy life, one that has left me with countless scars- mental and physical. But Never had I ever thought of myself as a softy, one that was willing to let go of his hate, of his anger and help someone who was in need- that wasn’t me… well I had thought that wasn’t me. But here I was, crouched in the damp sand next to an injured girl. I was shaken, even a bit taken back by my actions, by this need that swirled through me to help this girl. I didn’t want to feel like this, I wanted to feel like the soulless bitch I was, not this guys who actually felt something! All my life I have tried to get rid of that part of me, for as long as I can remember I have tried to become that emotionless git who hid behind his wit, smart comments and strength.

The girl opens her mouth and what comes out is not what I expected. Words of sarcasm dribbles from her full pale lips and I am slightly taken back by the viscousness of her words. I had only been trying to help after all- something that was rare from me. [/color][/size]“Woah, woah woah. I definitely don’t know you well enough to be on my back.” Despite myself I let a rouge grin slip onto my lips at that, my face suddenly not as firm as stone, but as cheeky and as sly as a fox. The anger and confusion that had been building up within me slowly fades as I brush off the sarcasm of her earlier words. As mother used to say, sticks and stones may break your bones, but names will never harm me.

Suddenly I was angry again, the anger within me building faster than a storm, raging stronger than the high speed winds of a hurricane. I try to push the anger away, I try to subdue it, but it was strong and it filled me with a type of rage that I hadn’t felt in a while. I hated her! I hated her more than anyone else in the world! That wretched bitch did not deserve me as a son. She could die in hell for all I care. But these thoughts didn’t seem strong-harsh- enough. What she did to me- well frankly it was unforgivable. How could she have done it? Just left me when I was at my weakest? Left me when I was that one person who loved her more than anything in the world. She promised she would never leave- she promised. And where was she now? Huh? She was gone. She never came back, never said goodbye… as did my father. They were both two worthless pieces of shits, and people that wouldn’t even recognise me if they ever saw me again- I knew that I wouldn’t recognise them- and for that, they would be lucky.

With great effort I shake away the thoughts of my parents and try to dampen the storm of emotions which raged on within the walls of my skin. “It just needs a bit of salt, that’s all.” The girls voice cuts through me, distracting me from my raging emotions. I look down at the girl to see her staring at me, her green eyes alight, her lip curled up slightly in a smirk. I smile back, my lips tilting up slightly in the corners- but it wasn’t a genuine smile, this one was forced. And then the girl was trying to get to her feet. She wobbled around, her legs, her body, fighting to find that balance that she needed. She groaned and I could tell by the sudden paleness in her cheeks that she was light headed. As though on reflex my hand reaches out and touches the soft skin of her arm gently, in order to help her keep balance. She mumbles something under her breath, and I could tell it was an insult, one directed at the blood soaked tree branch- and not me.

This time I smile for real, my lips pulled back tightly over my teeth as I chuckle at the girl- all of the anger that had previously surged through me forgotten. “Now now, don’t be go blaming that poor branch over there- just because you are clumsy.” I say it as a joke, as I come to a stand beside the girl. My dark onyx like eyes dancing. “Um and before we go anywhere we need to stop that bleeding,” I say as my hands reach down for the edge of my singlet. I pull the white material over my head, until I stand half naked- standing in nothing but mu loose, low cut denim jeans. “Here, let me wrap this around your leg, you know, to stop the bleeding.”

A look of contemplation wandered aimlessly across my features, its presence bringing both brows to arch in a moment of thoughtfulness while pouted lips squeezed together almost analytically. There was something fascinating about the frosted look that possessed the boy’s eyes, something familiar, a look of anger, not on the surface but bubbling beneath, burning somewhere deep and hidden. If it wasn’t so often caught in my own reflection I would have perhaps not noticed it at all, it would have swept by quietly... but I so often shared that overwhelming emotion that it was almost neon, whispering softly to me, daring me to ignore it. Of course it didn’t last and the moment the look began to vanish from the soul of his depthless eyes I’d turn my attention elsewhere, opting to follow his own glance towards the injury that for a second I’d almost completely forgotten about. It was amazing how the body worked, how a simple distraction could remove pain from the brain, but like everything even that was temporary.

It felt demeaning to accept help from a stranger, even more insulting for it to come from a man... but for once I didn’t object. It would have been different if it was an arm, but alas it wasn’t. At least another scar wouldn’t look out of place on one of my limbs considering the state of my right thigh, the flesh burnt white upon a tan with aged scarring. It even had a partner to match curled around the length of my ribs, it wasn’t the most attractive thing but I didn’t care. I didn’t care about much anymore. Not really. Allowing my weight to rest into his hold brought a wave of relief and in moment the nausea settled, its vehement strikes succumbing to silence in the pit of my stomach and the wave of white blurring my vision quickly cleared alongside the ringing notion that had begun to echo within the core of my ear drums.

The sound of the man’s voice breaking above the waves drew my attention back within seconds, it was quite harmonious for a guy, that gruff tone intertwined with the timbre of masculinity was always calming, it reminded me of Reef, if only a little. It was easy to note a smile suited him a lot more than a look of sculpted marble worn previously, it was comforting, though of course I wouldn’t admit that under pain of torture. I didn’t find comfort in people anymore and that was for the best. People were there to compete against and if not compete to ignore and fill empty space with empty words. Ghosts. That’s all people were to me now. But here I was conversing with the dead. People always said I’d died with Reef... But in all honesty I’d always been like this. Sarcastic. Unapproachable. Stubborn. They were just a collection of my most appealing and charming traits after all.

Of course I was well aware that I was, but that wasn’t something I’d proudly admit, I had far too much pride to start accepting that usually I had two left feet. Although there were acceptances, I could scale a rock-face without putting a toe out of place in seconds, I could do acrobatic antics off cliff-tops and rock-heads with such elegance and precision that it was as if I’d been born doing it. I just couldn’t run in a straight like, or walk in one for that matter.. or play catch. Just the basic things four year olds can accomplish. “You never know if we don’t stop it we might catch a shark.” It was hard to tell if the comment was serious or a joke for the expression upon my face remained neutral, the tone of my voice smooth as if it’d broken on the lightest wind and was carried upon the whispers of the waves. “First you try to get me on my back, now you’re getting undressed, quite forward aren’t you?” This time the amusement was clear for lines of white peered from beneath upturning lips causing two faint dimples to wash upon the golden pallet of my cheeks now regaining some of their lost colour. “What’re you doing out here so early anyway?

[/size]he shirt is wrapped tightly in my hand as I bend down to tie it around the injured girls leg. I try to be gentle, my rough hands tying the cotton tightly but not to tightly around the leg stopping the rush of blood from falling any further. While I tie the strip of material around her leg words of more sarcasm fall from her lips and it gets me thinking, that maybe we are more alike than I had first thought? We both seemed to use words as a way of protecting ourselves- ever since I had gotten here she had only let words of some sort of harshness fall from her lips. Where I seem to lean more towards the joking side, the way in which I try to hide the real terrors which haunt me- well around the ladies at least.

[/color][/size]“First you try to get me on my back, now you’re getting undressed, quite forward aren’t you?” With a smile I look up at the girl, expecting to see her face twisted in a smirk of some sort, but it wasn’t. A smile had slipped onto her lips, making small dimples form on her cheeks. It made her look cute, adorable even. It was the first time I noticed how pretty she was. The light tan of her skin, her dark hair. It was a lovely combination. The way her lips curved in that smile… the lovely colour of her clear eyes now filled with dancing amusement.

Blinking I look away from her, my hands playing with the material for a little longer until I was satisfied that it was going to do its job. Then I look at the ground for a moment, my hands sinking into the grains of sand. I watch as I press harder, my whole hand disappearing under the surface of the slightly stained particles. It was fascinating, the way that sand could just eat something up, turn something that was found into lost… It was interesting the way the grains moved around each other but they never seemed to crack, they never seemed to be squashed by the pressure that they have to endure…

“What’re you doing out here so early anyway?” The girls question brings my mind out from the depth of my thoughts. Why had I been out here so early? The question catches me off guard until I realise that I hadn’t been out here early- I am out late. I hadn’t made it home last night, so technically I was out much too late for my liking. I had been drinking away my thoughts, the memories that often took up refugee in my mind when I let my guard down, thats why I had been out so late, why I was up so early. Because of my parents, because of the things they had done to me… because I hurt, I miss them… I wished they would say sorry.

“Long story,” I mumble gruffly climbing to my feet. I bend over slightly, wiping away the last of the sand that clung to my pants as though they would die if they departed. I didn’t want to tell this girl why I was out so early, I didn’t want to tell her that I was still a mommas boy in heart- even though I hadn’t seen my parents faces in what would be like 8 years. No I didn’t really want to tell her anything personal about myself. You see I was not the type of person to go wandering around the streets crying ‘woe is me’, I was one who bottled up their feelings, one who like to keep what they really thought, how they were really feeling bottled away inside the raging mass of emotions already contained.

“Why are you? Out here so early?” I ask, tilting my head to the side slightly in question. I usually wasn’t one for conversation, not when I hadn’t spent for the whole night and was just running off the late side effects of consuming little too much alcohol- I could already feel the beginning of a pounding headache. Slowly I raised one of my hands to my temple, where I rubbed it gently, coaxing the headache to stay away a little longer. “The names Jev, by the way,” I add with a small smile, my free hand moving out between the air that separated us in the means of a handshake.

Of course it stung and the tension flushed through muscle after muscle in an untamable spasm, but I managed to contain a sheet of composure upon my features, not allowing the tenderness to show in the stretch of my lips or the faint crinkling in my brow. Most people would have been appreciative, they’d have definitely said thank you and gushed with admiration and most likely would have flustered under the touch and whined like some damsel in distress. But that just wasn’t me, I’d never been the type to cry about spilt milk, I’d never been the type to accept help or welcome decency. But sometimes you’ve just got to succumb to circumstance and be a little thankful that you aren’t dragging your leg back into town with the hope someone will be around to fix it within the hour. Naturally I remain perfectly still, decidedly not making the issue anymore difficult as I silently observe the technique, for a moment falling victim to the soft gentle touch of his rough hands and the evident caressing care in each tentative touch. There’s something different about him that I can’t quite grasp, but it’s enchanting, charming almost...not your stereotypical smooth-talking, polite chivalrous prince charming, but a byronic hero...someone more infatuating than flawless. The lingering silence however proves to be an inevitable distraction as I momentarily reassess my words, half-wandering if the question had been offensive or inappropriate in some manner. I’d been told in the past on many occasions I didn’t think before speaking, but with some certainty I was almost convinced what I’d asked was the conventional thing to say at this time in the morning. The reply wasn’t unexpected after the pause and without even delving into the midst of my mind to speculate and contemplate I could quite easily fall to the conclusion that there was some underlying issue, something niggling at the corners of his heart and chewing incessantly on the wires in his brain. But that wasn’t any of my business, just like me being here wasn’t any of his. But then if everyone minded their own business there’d never be anything to talk about. Extending both arms outwards in a tension-relieving stretch I’d permit the thoughts to venture afar from the recess of my mind, no longer drifting between maybes and what-ifs and instead a light, airy sigh brushes the coat of my tongue and slips freely into the air, pausing for a moment or two before evaporating to the east. “I’m always out this early, I don’t have a lot else to do.” It was a true statement, it didn’t really give an reasoning but it didn’t withhold the outline of the issues of death, abandonment and all those over cliche messes that surround family life and losing loved ones. Of course there was school, but it was easy enough to slip out of classes, they made exceptions for screw-ups and troublemakers, they just weren’t worth the hassle. [/size]t first I thought she was going to leave me hanging as she told me that she was out early today because that was normal for her- she was always out early looking for something to do. It was stringer, of course I knew people were always out early, but I had never really wandered why- it was silly I know. I always thoughts that lying in bed sleeping away the last of my hangover was something that everyone did, I never really took into fact that not everyone hid behind the fiery liquid of intoxication- not everyone drunk away there demons. [/color]“Sorry about the blood,” she apologised and I shrugged it away with a small smile. I didn’t mind blood. It was something that I was used to- something that most District 4 careers would be used too.

I hadn’t been training my whole life to be a career. No. I used to be a child who had sausage fingers, who had a face that should have belonged to a donut box, rosy cheeks and fat little legs. It was disgusting, thinking back to the child I used to be, to the pampered little momma’s boy that I used to be, that I used to love to be. But not anymore- and never again would I be that boy, that one that nearly threw up at the thought of something, god forbid, that would make me healthy or even sounded healthy. “Coral, Coral Riptide.” The sound of the girls- of Corals- voice brought me out of my thoughts and back into the present. I let her name float around in my mind for a moment. It was a pretty name, a name that I related to the ocean, to the one place that I could totally feel at ease when I was around it. I liked it. I liked her name and I would of told her that, but I stopped myself, not wanting to sound like a creep.

“I don’t usually split my leg open though, that’s just something new to brighten my day obviously.” I smile at this comment, allowing myself to straighten up until I was fully standing, a chuckle dancing around the guard of my lips. “Well that’s a relief,” I say, my head tilting to the side slightly as I study the girl in front of me. She had tanned skin, skin that had been blasted with the colour of bronze- it was stunning. I smile once again before I turned to face the crashing waves of the ocean behind us. “Its beautiful- isn’t it?” I whisper to her, my voice as quiet as the whistling of the wind. I didn’t know why I told her, or why I felt the need to share my longing for the ocean, but I did, and I did not regret it. “Sometimes I come and sit here, on the sand, and watch for hours as the waves crash onto the sandy shore.” My voice almost seems distance as the words fall from my lips, my eyes studying the surging mass of liquid.

“It helps… Helps me forget the things that I don’t want to remember.” I whisper, this time my voice falling in time with the crashing waves. I shake my head slightly, realising that I had been speaking aloud. “Uh, sorry ‘bout that,” I sigh, moving to take a seat on the soft sand, but pausing my eyes meeting Corals- cheeky smile playing at the edges of my lips, “Do you think that leg is going to be okay? Like do I need to carry you to the hospital or something, you know, cause you might feint on my or something, but hey that might not be from pain and be from my charming looks.”

The way judgmental eyes peer in disgust at those a little different or those a little quirkier than themselves in spite or jealousy. But in Jev’s presence I didn’t feel as inclined to picture the negativity surrounding mankind and instead all thoughts of dislike evaporated, leaving a vacancy that cast my mind into an internal confusion, searching for something to fill the sudden emptiness where hatred usually festered and grew with frustration and irritation as life-long companions. He seemed sweet, as sweet as a stranger on a beach could possibly be…perhaps mildly strange, but who wasn’t? I certainly wasn’t normal, in the cliche stereotypical view of what normal should be anyway. Clearing my mind from its sudden panic I’d turn my attention to listening to the distracted sound in his voice, the tone that seemed to fall into a state of mechanics, where the words left his lips but didn’t seem to be directed at me, or anyone for that matter. It was peculiar, listening to someone talk to themselves in the presence of others, but then I was almost convinced that in my time alone I exchanged words with the ocean and told it secrets that only the stars were close enough to overhear. Beautiful? It was spectacular in every sense of the word, I couldn’t agree with him more. But it wasn’t always beautiful, sometimes it was vulgar with the rage of a thousand men choking within the waves. Sometimes it was dark, darker than nightfall when the stars hold too much fear and hide behind the clouds, when the moon vanishes from all existence and black swallows the sky leaving nothing but a void above the earth looking down with an air of vengeance and supremacy. I’d seen it when it was far from beautiful, when it was nothing but power and malevolence, when the waves roared with a might unlike anything in Panem, when even the rocks quivered in fear and prayed the sea would show them mercy. I’d been in the centre of anarchy, stranded in the core of the sea’s grief and forced to watch helplessly as the ocean circled the rocky formation and taunted its victims with satanic glee. I’d watched as Reef was stolen from the algie stained boulder he’d clung desperately too, as he was swept away and dragged beneath the inky substance. Then I too had suffered at its expense, as it threw me backwards and thrashed me against the only things providing a hope for life. After that I couldn’t remember much, just that when I awoke I had no brother and a disgusting set of scars around against my thigh and ribs. I was probably lucky that a little flesh was all it cost me, for Reef hadn’t had that sort of luxury. “Beautifully unpredictable.” Murmuring softly I’d turn to cast my eyes afar, glancing into the sea that still provided me with solace despite the incident. Even after the traumatic event I’d returned to its embrace, forgiving it and willing it to accept me once more, thankful it offered me survival in a time of what should have been inevitable death. “It reminds me of everything I want to forget. But yet I can’t leave it.. because at the same time it’s everything I want to remember and everything I have.” Testing the length of my lower lip with a fleeting trip from my tongue I’d shift softy to take a seat at his side, comfortably sinking into the golden sand, welcoming its rough familiarity and its chilling touch. “I can’t imagine that some people have never seen the sea.. never felt the adrenaline it brings, the excitement, the danger..” Dragging off after realising I was beginning to ramble I’d sit for a moment in expectant silence, listening once more to the sound of his soothing voice as it brushed through the air and nudged the flush of my cooling cheek. “Mhm I’m sure your charming good looks have all the girls tripping over themselves hmm?” A little sarcasm intertwined with an otherwise soft tone as I’d offer a partial smile before glancing towards the length of my leg with little speculation, It’ll be fine, I’ve recovered from worse. Besides some people get around with one leg, I’m positive I can hop, limp and all those other one legged things.”
