and bitter rivalries grew - and as the rest of the world unfolded around them, these people took their places as not much more than a simple fable that once held great truth.
Where there are endless waves and bountiful treasures - fisherman and sailors and those who scavenge for precious relics of the old times - treachery always follows. Long before Panem itself, legends emerged from the sea-folk, telling tales of those who robbed the honest men of their loads. Land-dwellers spread their stories and soon pirates became something more than simply thieves of the ocean. Warriors and brave heroes, great villains
That was once. Now, however, things are beginning to change as those who cared have long since stopped providing for their people. Haul after haul are dragged in across the shores of District Four, laden with wares to be sold. The temptation, combined with greedy hands and empty stomachs grows too much for some to resist. Some say that in times of great struggle, humanity reverts back to the way it acted in times of old. If the tattered books and hushed whispers can be trusted, then this is far closer to the truth than any of the Sparrow Sisters imagine. To them, it has simply become a way of life. Bearing swords and taking the ocean for what it has to offer - piracy is more than a last resort.
It was easy, really. As with all stories, everything began okay. Then the storm came and took their father with it, snatched him from the boat along with the things he scavenged from the water. So they took the boat and decided that because the sea had stolen from them, they would take freely from the sea. Their first act was simple - take the swords they needed from the training facility and learn the currents as if they depended on them.
So for countless days and endless nights they sailed, looking for victims, merciless and honest as the stories said. Brandishing all that they need, the Sparrow Sisters give and take from who they please, evading authorities and just about managing to scrape together what they need.
But everybody knows that real treasures are never buried - rather, held close to one's heart.
CHARACTERS
Captain Ophelia Sparrow - [eighteen] - South
It was her idea to take to the seas with sparkling eyes and a sword at hand. Never one to back down from a challenge of kinds, Ophelia was almost a little too pleased with the opportunity to lead her sisters in a mission that tends to stretch a little beyond their simple needs. She's the leader, without doubt, fired by a competitive streak and a fierce determination - she will do whatever it takes to get what she wants. Often alarmingly protective of her sisters, Ophelia doesn't make much of an effort to get to know people well. She's not a details person, and although harsh at times, she usually means well. As compulsive liar, she automatically reaches for a mistruth when she feels threatened in any way. Ophelia has no tolerance for weakness.
Artemis Sparrow - [seventeen] - Elegant
As long as she can remember, the water has been the floor beneath Artemis' feet. Before the infamous shipwreck and the early demise of her father, the girl was the only one of the sisters who truly had a love for sailing. Aboard a ship, everything is second nature to her, for she grew up learning eagerly everything she could from her surroundings. She controls the navigation and tracks the stars, plotting routes and clambering about the ropes in the darkness with ease. She's very quiet and thoughtful, however completely lost and endlessly clumsy when on land.
Aurora Sparrow - [sixteen] - Lalia
She's a believer in the finest sense of the word. Empathetic, compassionate and scatter-brained, Aurora spent her childhood reading fairy stories and listening intently to the lies Ophelia wove. As a rule, she believes everything to the letter - the truth is, in it's way, her own personal poison. Wide-eyed wonderment surrounds the world, and why shouldn't it when the girl is quite certain that mermaids lurk beneath the surface of the water and the dead truly do come back to haunt you. Sarcasm is more than lost on the child. Raw and completely honest herself, she follows Ophelia's lead without question. Her mind is filled with fairies and goblins, witches and magic, and when somebody says 'everything's going to be okay', she believes them.
Lilliana Sparrow - [fifteen] - Clover
Logical and determined to the point of obsession, Lilliana is the one who makes sure everything goes to plan. Where Ophelia is often brash and overlooks details, Lilliana gathers information to the smallest variables and picks up the pieces. She's dark and evasive, with an earnest tone to what she says that people cannot help but trust. Lilliana is incredibly loyal, however the motives behind the endless work she does are partly because of her compulsive personality and partly because she's so terribly afraid that what she's doing is wrong. The only one with anything of a moral compass on the situation, she figures that if she keeps on doing on it right and keeps everyone else in line, they might just get away with it.
Evelyn Sparrow - [fourteen] - Stare
For Evelyn, it wasn't so much a case of being the best - rather, being perfect. She's clever, clever enough to know that in a large family like her own you have to be more than simply 'good' to stand out. Before her father died, she dedicated her life to being the definition of flawless. A little girl with a god-complex, she's good as gold when she chooses to be, but for all the wrong reasons. Manipulating her teachers and father was reasonably easy, however these days her pretentious, better-than-you attitude doesn't get her very far. She's certainly quick-witted, but perhaps not not quick-witted enough.
Grace Sparrow - [thirteen] - Zoe
The baby of the family, Grace has always gotten away with almost anything she dare - and she dares. Spoiled rotten and devilish, she knows exactly what she is doing. Lillian is the only one who can properly see through her smiles, not that she makes much of an effort to hide her rebellious and often downright creepy ways. The girl is desperate to one-up everybody else, however deep down she's filled with a desperate yearning to fit in and be like her older sisters. She has a special admiration for Ophelia, who scarcely gives her the time of day. She's harsh and insensitive, however below the careless charade she's somewhat thoughtful, if self-centered.
INFORMATION
District Four. Mama passed away when Grace when very small. Each of them trained as Careers until their father died, with varying levels of dedication. I'm open to pretty much any changes regarding the personalities and such. Lots of sword-swishing and pirate feels,
