The high seas of District Four are laced with far more than fish. As well as the boats that haul catch toward the district, there are other, more valuable wares aboard ships, heading from the wealthier regions of Panem to the Capitol. While the Sparrow Sisters have made use of this tempting opportunity to take what they please from the world that has given them nothing - they are not the only children who sail the seas searching for more than just buried treasure.
The orphanage that is tucked away down by the docks holds more than it's fair share of unfortunate children. They are desperate for a second chance, and one morning as they watch a group of girls steal a Peacekeepers ship and make their way across the ocean, they find it. It takes weeks of planning for the small group of orphans to work out how they are going to escape the stronghold of the Capitol without being thrown into the detention center, or worse. Finally, one morning, long before dawn, they stow away on a ship headed toward the horizon and left. Runaways, just looking for an adventure.
It was, of course, an adventure that they found as they took over the ship far away from the curious eyes of the land-dwellers. It was only then that the orphans discovered what they would have to do to survive. They didn't like it, not one bit, but they persisted, becoming, in a way the monsters that they detested. It was after months of taking only what they needed that the Finch children decided to be better. Instead of simply using the ocean, they decided to give - rid it of the danger and evil that haunted it's waves.
Of course, The Sparrow Sisters quickly became their most fearsome and wanted enemies.
CHARACTERS
Captain Jasper Finch - [eighteen] - Cass
It was his idea to run away into the unknown. For all his life Japser has longed for adventure. At first, it was one of a thousand elaborate daydreams that was never to become anything - for this is all they ever are. With encouragement from Edwin, however, Jasper found himself the fair and just leader of The Red Star. He's often doubtful, and finds it hard to make decisions concerning the others - but when he knows he is right he is not afraid to be firm. His strong moral compass makes up for his lack of technical knowledge, and he prefers to run his ship as far more of a team effort than Ophelia does. He often feels as though he's just along for the ride, but strong intuition and a kind heart lead the crew to trust him with their lives. Jasper grew up in the orphanage, never having known his parents.
Edwin Finch[/i][/color] - [seventeen] - Ele
Unlike the quiet, fair Captain, Edwin Finch is wild and rarely thinks before he acts. He's a whirlwind of parties and drinking, living in the moment and giving no thought to the future. He trusts Jasper completely, however he's often having to push the older boy out of his comfort zone in order to go anywhere. Although a little out of control, he's not selfish or unkind, rather the opposite. He's compassionate and affectionate, and the younger children idolise him as he is always able to make them laugh. He was born to two fisherman, who both went to sea and never came back a year before Edwin convinced his best friend to lead the orphans to sea. He had a baby sister, however he later learned that his parents sold her to their fellow sailors in return for a bag of gold that Edwin's parents desperately needed.
Roger Finch - [sixteen] - Chelsey
Roger is very easily scared, with a burning curiosity for everything around him. He holds no particular views when it comes to what is right and what is wrong, however he is quite content in going along with what he is told. He's an explorer, prone to wandering off in search of buried treasure. Reasonably grounded and logical, the boy is interested in the past. Formerly a Career, he hated the violence of the Games and vowed that if he was ever reaped he wouldn't hurt anybody. He's charming, although not particularly brave, and expects everyone else to understand what he is talking about - which they seldom do. Likely to disappear when there is work to be done, Roger's father ran away and his mother later committed suicide. He's not greatly effected by this, as he never had strong relationships with either his mother nor his father. He comes across a little distant at times, and struggles to form connections with people - he prefers objects and tidal charts and telescopes.
Hark Finch - [sixteen] - Nofo
Hark's imagination frequently runs wild - he's the storyteller, constantly winding tales of sailors and the ocean for his shipmates. He feels as though he relates to nobody but the fish, and spent most of his time before running away watching the ships pass. After the return of his abusive brother and former guardian to the District, Hark suffered from dissociative fugue. He's incredibly naive, with a great interest in Edwin for he leads a life bordering that of the characters in his stories. He has a quiet respect for Jasper, doing as he's told and going about his work and keeping out of the way. His stories are a form of comfort to him, and he uses them to help the others. Sees himself as a fish trying to survive on land.
Felix Finch - [fifteen] - Windy
Often said to live completely inside his own head, Felix has to be told everything directly to understand. He's the kind of boy who would walk right off the end of the dock without noticing, but every now and then he comes up with something that makes everybody suspect he is far more brilliant than he lets on. Slight obsession with monsters, deep-rooted hatred for the Capitol that stems from his rebel parents. Felix lost his younger sister in a house fire when he was thirteen, and is very caring toward both Henry and Charlie, although he understands neither. Although oblivious to most of the world around him, Felix is incredibly clever when it comes to numbers, and handles the navigation side of the runnings of the ship. Reads poetry, but refuses to write anything himself.
Henry Finch - [fifteen] - Rook
Obsessed with idea of a 'greater good' and all things valiant and brave, Henry is cheeky and fun-loving. He has little idea of boundaries and what you are supposed to say in certain moments, but he certainly means well. When he was small, his mother used to read him Robin Hood, and the idea has stuck in his mind ever since. He likes to think of the crew of The Red Star as the do-gooders of the ocean, and himself as somewhat of a hero waiting to be discovered. He's not afraid to work hard, but he knows little about the running of a ship and often lands himself in trouble, which Charlie or Jasper will end up dragging him out of. Ultimately, he means well. Henry was raised by his grandmother, who died when he was twelve.
Charlie Finch[/i][/color] - [fourteen] - Clover
Despite being the only girl aboard, Charlie refers to herself as one of the Finch Brothers. She's a free-spirited tomboy with the kind of pretentious self-importance that one does not usually find surrounding fourteen year olds. She's stubborn and positively fierce, with a secret wish to one day be captain of the ship. She hoards items from the ships that Jasper firmly declares she does not need, and has no tolerance for being told what to do. Prone to temper tantrums but with an infectious defiance about her that makes her fun to be around, Charlie enjoys dragging other people intro trouble with her. She'll go to any length to get what she wants, and nobody will stand in her way. Charlie is irrational and downright cruel at times. Despite her carelessness and lack of respect for authority, she adores Jasper, who is the closest thing to a real family she ever had. She grew up unaware that her birth parents had sold her shortly after birth on the condition that her adoptive parents never tell her the truth. After her birth parent's untimely death, the decision was made to let her know about her past. She ran away from home and refused to come back, hurt that the people she had trusted had 'bought' her and lied to her.
INFORMATION[/color][/size]
District Four. Runaways. Sparrow Sisters sub-plot. Live at sea, docking very rarely as they take what they need and nothing more to sell. They all decided to take on the name 'Finch' because it was Jasper's name. Democratic, do-gooder pirates, mang. I'm open to pretty much any changes regarding personality and such. Lots of sword-swishing and pirate feels,
