Age: 16
Gender: Female
District/Area: District 5
Appearance:
Etra Petrol isn't anything special when it comes to looks. She's pretty, but not someone you'd do a double take on. She has straight dark hair down to her shoulder blades and her hair is always a tad bit disheveled due to the fact that she does not own a mirror. Etra has a pretty pale complexion, for she works in the power plants, helping to operate the machinery to create power for the Capitol. She has small hands with long, delicate fingers that help her to write with elegant letters. Etra's face consists of high cheek bones and deep brown eyes, giving her quite a startling appearance in dim light, but in broad daylight it gives her somewhat of a royal look.Personality:
Etra's looks in no way broadcast that she has much confidence, though. She has slightly hunched shoulders, conveying that she is shielding herself from something. She is of average height, which helps her blend in and her weight is slightly lower than average. Even though her family is middle classed, that is still insufficient to provide a filling meal every night by district standards. Etra also isn't too athletic, she doesn't lots of time outside because she works long hours to provide more money to her family. She can run fast, but only for short distances and she can't lift much more than fifty pounds. Etra's walk is also something conveying her shyness. She walks with short steps that are quickly paced. her upper body stays rigid and her arms sway ever so slightly. The only thing that makes people find her pleasant is her beaming smile.
Etra has a very intricate personality. In her head there swims thousands upon thousands of ideas for stories and illustrations. She is able to express these by saving some extra pennies to buy notebooks at the district store where she fills them to the square millimeter with drawings and elegant letters. She has tens of these notebooks hidden under her mattress or under her clothes in the dresser. The reason that Etra hides these books is that she doesn't feel comfortable sharing these with anyone, not even her own family. She believes that writing and drawing is strange and odd and if anyone found out she would be picked on and bullied. Etra also enjoys just sitting and thinking about things to jot down in her hidden books. This secretive behavior comes from her tendency to be incredibly vain. She's always worrying about her social image and in order to keep it clean she resists gossip, because that never ends well for anyone. Etra is also a strong believer in treating other people how she wishes to be treated. Sadly, her secretive and vain behavior gets her some enemies.History:
Etra also is extremely family oriented and loyal. She will do anything for her family, including volunteering in their place for the Hunger Games. She does fight a lot her older sister (Talia), but hardly at all with her younger one (Sadie). This is because of Etra's maternal instincts coming from her family orientation. Sadie loves when Etra acts motherly, but Talia can't stand it. But, Etra is also a nice chunk of the problem when it comes to quarrels. Etra believes that she is right, and she will not give that up. The only way her fights end is if her opponent gives up or an elder intervenes.
This stubbornness is what fuels her determination and persistence. She is only able to maintain her focus, work past her limits, and even sometimes convince herself to steal all because she wants to give her family the best life they can have. Her loyalty is to the point of extreme, but this only exists for her mother and two sisters, for they are her only friends. The reason for that is Etra has lots of trouble trusting people because of her secretive nature, so she has no true friends.
Etra is also a very adaptable person. She has lost so many family members and gone through so many financial ups and downs that she can adapt to many things with little struggle. When her family gets to become poor, she signs up for more tessera and will even steal money from other people or merchandise from stores. When her family is doing well, she works long hours to make sure that they stay that way, putting in nearly ever single penny for the good of her sisters and mother. She also has learned to go a couple days without sufficient food and nourishment, for when you don't have money for food and forests for hunting exist no where in or around your district, you must starve.
When Etra was born, her parents staring having trouble with finance because of their two now two children. While Etra's mother, Mardy, stayed home to care for the kids, Etra's father went out working and thieving to keep the family going. When their youngest addition to the family came along, Sadie, their father began stealing even more, despite that the grandparents were helping now. One day, Etra's father did not return home after leaving for oil drilling, his job. The family waited nearly a week before they found out that a Peacekeeper had caught him stealing and when he resisted the Peacekeeper shot and killed him. The family fell into the grasp of poverty. They moved into the grandparent's house and Mardy got a job in the power plants. The Petrol's were able to keep alive until their grandparents passed away, sending them into an even worse financial situation. Luckily, the girls were able to get jobs as power plant workers as well, not to mention the large amounts of tessera they were able to get as each one became eligible. Soon, they were able to pull out and maintain a middle classed ranking in the district, but only if they worked as hard as they possibly could. When any of them got sick, one person would have to stay home to care for them and only two would be working, sending the family back into a state of poverty until the sick was back on her feet.Codeword: oDair
Etra's mother, Mardy, was a very hard working woman. The girls all seemed to have their dad's looks, so Mardy looks different. Mardy has soft features, smooth and elegant like a dove, not her daughters' fine and defined looks. Talia is the eldest daughter in the family with an age of seventeen. She likes to take control and be bossy, probably why she has so many disputes with her younger sister, Etra. Talia is also a bit of a troublemaker and gets caught stealing more than her other two sisters because she believes in going all out instead of stealth. Sadie, the youngest daughter of the three, who is now twelve. She's extremely sensitive and cries at the slightest insult.
When Etra was eleven, she bought her first notebook. She was able to save up enough to buy it and at first, it was a journal. Then she began filling the pages with drawings and gradually started writing stories. She realized that she was going to need another notebook when she reached the end of her first one halfway through a story. She keeps this book, instead of hidden somewhere in her house, in her backpack for school. When she is sad or down she will look at it and remember that she always has someone (or rather something) that will listen to her vent.
Etra did have a good friend when she was younger, but she died when Etra and her were only four years old of a disease, so Etra hardly remembers her. She does remember that her friend and her would always pretend they were exploring in each other's houses and played tag. But as each year passes without her, Etra begins to realize that a life without friends is a sad life, and that's not what Etra wants. She wants friends and even in the future, a boyfriend. She wants to reach out, but she can't, for she is too scared of what may happen to her if she does.
