District Two

As soon as the small girl received a brutal impact to her ribs, it was clear things were going to shift. The crowd hushed, not enjoying the disadvantages. How odd that only a second ago they were cheering, and the next it's an unfair fight. Still Gala was determined to have a comeback...it doesn't happen though. A few decent shots, but her ribs were greatly effecting her attacks. The crowd continues with how unfair it all is, how the youngster was hurt. Damn them, stop persuading the judges!

A boot nearly buries Gala's own tiny foot in the floor, and she could feel the cracks and unwanted movement of some bones. The new strike is as painful as the one to the ribs, though both are more burning then anything. She pushes the older career backwards, but before she has a chance to go in for another attack a judge's voice breaks through everything.

"That's it!" He announces. "Mason wins this round!" All of the pain dissipates, as all Gala could feel was her heart drop to the pit of her stomach. How could this be? Just a second ago she was kicking ass, she was winning, and now....it was over? She stares at her opponent with the most disgusted face she's ever given; eyebrows arched inward, a frown as stiff as a statue, and baby blue eyes wanting nothing more then to punch him with everything she had left. How dare you.

The nurses arrive before Gala has a chance to take off; those were the last people she wanted around her. Doctors, hospitals, anything of the sort she hated. First she looses, and now they want to patch her back up? Not happening. Even with as much pain as her foot was radiating, she wasn't allowing them to carry her out in any such way. She didn't even want a bandaid from those jerks. The first person that attempts to come near the young girl to help her gets shoved away.

"Get away from me!" Gala screams as she moves as fast as she could to the large doors she entered from. Every step brought an unbearable shock to her crushed foot, and the fast speed was making her lungs and ribs burn like they were on fire, but still she didn't stop. She didn't want help from anyone. She didn't deserve it, once again she couldn't proof herself. At least the anger was covering a nice chunk of the pain.

The lobby was surprisingly quiet as everyone in the audience stayed in their seats for the next fight. Finally, alone. For the first time she stops to lean against a wall and attempt to catch her breath. Every time air fills her lungs, stretching her ribs, a horrible shooting pain arrives. The pulse in one of her feet is just as bad, and eventually leaning on the healthy foot isn't enough. She slides down the wall to sit, extending her wounds foot. How badly she wanted to punch someone, similar to how she punched the last guy at the end of her last fight. Just a minute to rest, then she'll storm off somewhere else before anyone even realizes.

Until the last moment I'm holding my breath. Against all odds she's got a very good chance to win this.
At every blow she recieves I wince as if I was hit myself...worse actually. Everybody here can hear her ribs crack. That one must hurt horribly and instantly I'm worried she might draw back into her shell but she keeps fighting. What a girl. Maybe my hard training with her pays off now, maybe she needed all my crap. I'd like to think so.

As soon as the winner is announced I see her face drop, so does mine.

She refuses to get carried out but I know she's hurting and I'm so damn proud of her. With fast steps I make my way down to the room where I know I'll find her.
I don't bother knocking but barge right in.
"Gala! You were awesome!" I yell at her before I'm even next to her. Then I sit down next to her and put my hand on her back. "You're hurting pretty badly, I know. It was sooo close." I gently rub her back.
Whether I mean she's hurting physically or mentally remains a secret. A bit of both...
"I never thought you had this in you. You actually deserved this win. In my book you did win...over yourself!"
Wow, where did I find those encouraging words? I actually surprise myself a litte. When I hear footsteps I take my hand off her yet I offer. "Should I go get you some ice?"

I would be placed against someone whom would be known to me. Perhaps, even like, but the first match that started up wasn't mine. It happened to be Gala's of all people. He small girl, whom I had falled for both as a friend and protector. To hear her name being announced for battle was almost heartbreaking. Especially when I heard who would be her competitor. "NO!" I say outloud when the match began. My brother sat beside me. His eyes trained on the field. He didn't say anything to me the entire time the battle went on, but my cheers for Gala soon quieted when Mason's luck turned and Gala's pain became mine. I felt every hit that Mason put against her. The part where he hit her ribs, I gasped. I knew that she had already been sore there from where those guys had kicked her. If only Mason knew, he might have stayed away from that spot. It didn't help at all the next time he took a shot in the same place and as Gala's face showed the pain of the broken rib. I jumped up from my chair in the stand, attempting to want to go after her, but my brother pulled me back down to sit and watch the horror as a minute later, he buried his foot deep on top of hers. "Gala..." My voice trails off and then the judge declares Mason the winner. I've met with Mason before... and he is a tough opponent. I only hope that Gala is alright... Mason, how could you? I realize though, it's the pregames. No nice opponents here. No teddy bears and hugs in this game. It's brutal and Gala just figured that out. I leave the stands, leaving my brother to support me in the battle that I will be participating in shortly. I go as fast as I can to the under part of the arena where I see Gala furiously take off to in order to escape the personell that was suppose to take care of her injuries. Just let them help you, Gala. Then again, I doubt I'd let them help me too after taking a defeat like that. I come down the hallway fast, and stop just shy of where I suddenly hear Matthew's voice ring out to Gala. "Gala! You were awesome!" To hear Matthew's pleasing words to his trainee was nice. I'd never heard him be so enthusiastic before and the way he was talking to her, it seemed like a bad time interrupt their moment. I stay where I'm at around the corner. Listening. A smile upon my face as I heard him ask if she wanted some ice. For some reason, the way he was encouraging her and telling her how she'd already won no matter what, made me smile.

Defeat, how nasty of a word. At first signing up for the pregames was simply to proof herself, now it had more meaning. Now that it was over for the young girl. It was more revolved around discovering her strength....well proofing herself had a lot to do with it to. If only she had another minute, another attack. The large career was hurting just as much! And he was at least twice the small girl's size. It wasn't fair.

Loud noise from the crowd escapes as a door creeks open for a minute; another fight already? Before Gala even hears footsteps, let alone has a chance to get up, her trainer's voice fills the currently silence; "Gala! You were awesome!" What? Was he joking? His trainee had lost, and he actually sounds proud? Certainly this was a first to hear this almost encouraging sound from Matthew.

"You're hurting pretty badly, I know. It was sooo close." Matthew claims, and even comforts Gala with rubbing her back. The kindness was so strange, but in a way reassuring. One thing Gala knew was that Matthew wasn't going to lie to make his trainee feel better, then was evident from day one.

"I'm not." Gala declares though she could feel pain radiating from everywhere. Still pain was nothing new. The fights, Gwen's great knife throwing skills, falling from the trapeze; pain was common. "I could of taken him." And she makes the decision, she wanted to be a tough girl, just like Kyanite.

"I never thought you had this in you. You actually deserved this win. In my book you did win...over yourself!"At least Matthew sounded proud. Despite all of the pain and horrible feelings a smile attempts it's way to Gala's face. She couldn't help but feel a little better knowing she won in her trainer's eyes. The smile's interrupted with the reminder of the punch to her lip. If only she did win.

"Thanks?" Gala questions whether it was a compliment or not, after all she liked to think she knew she had that in her. That she had that in there all along. Still she giggles a little to show she takes it as a joke; only to irritate her ribs greatly. Covering the pain with anger and adrenalin was begin to fade. She grips her side as if she could keep her ribs from moving.

Footsteps distract Gala for a second, her eyes quickly darting to the direction. She was still a little paranoid from after the fight she got herself and two others into. Now was not the time, though it was probably just someone from the audience.

"Should I go get you some ice?" Matthew offers as his hand retrieves back to him. Who wants to be caught comforting the looser? Gala couldn't blame him. But no one comes around from the corner. Was it Gwen? No, she wouldn't stop. There was no one that cared to ease drop. Probably someone that forgot why they got up in the first place.

"I'm fine..." Gala attempts to convince though she was only now beginning to steady her breathing. "Thanks though." This time it's very sincere, she was very grateful her trainer came out. His words that she won in his book was more then anyone else could give.

"You should go find out who's up next..." The pain was arriving as the anger drained. "I'm going to find a first-aid kit somehow." Her voice was light as to not effect her ribs, but a lot louder then a whisper. "Then I expect to see you and Kyanite kick some ass."

The girl's upset, angry, disappointed. "I know exactly how you feel. been there." I reassure her with a smile. "And yes, you could have taken him. "
I'm pretty surprised how tough she is today. It's quite different from the day the careers ganged up on her. I guess today was a fair fight. Maybe she needed that to get her confidence back.

Her "Thanks?" sounds more like a question but I smile. "Welcome."
Gala is trying her best to cover the pain up that she's feeling but the laugh makes her ribcage expand.
When she suggests that she'll find herself a first aid kitt, I shake my head.
"You know this works now...you swallow your pride and let the staff here do their job. that's what the medics are here for."
I give her a warning look not to contradict or make a face, then I get up and clap her on the shoulder.
"I'll grab someone for you."

On my way out the door I almost run into Kyanite who's standing out there waiting fro Gala.
"Hey!" I greet her a little surprised.
"Gala's inside. She might need a little support from her new friend." I suggest and offer her a smile as well. "You're fights tomorrow isn't it? I'm going to come and watch. Mine's the last one...against this girl I trained with the other day. I'm pretty sure I can take her."
I cast a glance back at the room and explain. "She needs a nurse. I'll be back soon."

This fight pit me against a tiny thirteen year old. It would of been better if I just lay down and given up, but no I didn't. I hurt that little girl today. Broken a rib maybe two, I even smashed her foot. I know what it takes to win a fight, but I'd rather not have to do something like that again. I doubt I could even if it meant death. That may not be completely true. I'd defend myself. Still, I'd rather not have to attack a little kid like that again. I limp away from the monstrosity. I don't want to be near that place any longer than I have to. I'll avoid that place. I don't care if I won or not. The pain radiating from my shin is getting worse. Others must see it as well, because I notice some healers coming toward my direction. "Get the fuck away from me. You people don't realize what I had to do just now do you? I fought and injured a little kid for Ripred's sake." The anger started to leak through my calmness. I limped away from the idiots who bothered me. Before I know, I've collapsed onto a chair. I just want this horrible day over with. When I lift my head, I notice the girl who I fought today. Well, this day can't possible get any worse. I'll be hearing a lot of flack from everyone in a matter of moments.

I walk along the dark hallways underneath the seats of the arena. Only a few rooms down here are being used to change and warm up. On the other side is where the emergency staff is situated. On my way to the nurses I stumble upon a figure who's sitting a few doors down on a chair, holding his head. He looks pretty pathetic.

At closer look I recognize the big guy that Gala has been fighting. Up close he looks even more impressive than from the audience seats. It's quite surprising that Gala did so well against him. He must have been holding back.

I stop in my tracks and give him a look. For some reason I'm mad at him. He hit my trainee so hard he most likely broke her rib. then again, I've pushed her sister in a pool, let her down and punched girls outside of the arena. This guy had to. yet I'm angry.
"You're a fucking asshole." I give him a weird smirk...as if I understand a little. "You know you might have broken her ribs." My gaze darkens because he should have apologized...not that I would. But he should.

Eventually Gala would of come across a first aid kit, though more likely then not Gwen would find her way in with one. She always fixed up her twin that was often falling out of trees. So doctors and such weren't really Gala's preference to say the least. Hearing Matthew's strict words on letting the trainer's do his job, and threatening look to not protest, was more of a defeat for the young trainee then loosing. She couldn't help but rest her head back on the wall and huff at her trainer's words.

"I'll grab someone for you." Matthew offers, though he was going to whether Gala approved or not. Protest? By the look on his face that wasn't a good idea. He's gone before she even has a chance.

Maybe Gala could ditch before they return? By the scorching pain that was probably not going to happen, or at least she wouldn't get far. Please get here Gwen. A voice breaks through the silence. "Hey!" Matthew must of run into someone, hopefully not a nurse already; and if Gala has any luck it's Gwen. "Gala's inside. She might need a little support from her new friend." Quickly she links the words together to figure out who it is, Kyanite. There goes Gala's chance of escaping.

I can sneak out of the house no problem, but listening to things that I shouldn't be has never turned out well for me. I almost always get caught. Even, now, as I listen to Gala and Matthew, my heart goes out for her and no sooner did that occur, I hear Matthew tellin her that she needs to swallow her pride and let the staff take care of her. That she needed to let them do their job. Kyanite couldn't agree more, but it seemed as though there is something deeper than just letting them help her. Was it just her pride? Or something else? I'll grab someone for you. It didn't donn on me until the words met with me too late, that I realized I had nowhere to hide. So, the moment, I try to hide, I'm caught by the one person that has taken me for a loop. My eyes meet with him as I hear his surprised 'Hey' and then he's already offering up his trainee to me. I give him a crooked smile wondering why he was acting like that. It wasn't his norm. Then more questions arise. "Yeah." I tell him, and hold back the name of the girl that I'd seen who would be fighting me. Did he know it was going to be Kayghna? Does he know how I'm feeling about that fight already? I sigh, as he tells me what he's going to be doing and getting a nurse for the injured girl who had just lost her first battle in front of a crowd. How horrible that must feel though. To be beaten, then expected to be healed afterwards. Yeah, like that is just going to take away all the pain and suffering.. and the humiliation. Poor Gala... You're not the only one that's went through that. I look after Matthew for a few moments, watching him walk away from me to go off to find help for Gala. I want Matthew to turn around and talk to me more cause I need to tell him what is going on in my head about tomorrow's battle, but he takes off too fast. My salvation for secrets has his back turned toward me as he walks away. Further and further down the hallway and with a bite of my lips, I turn around the corner and enter the room, seeing Gala sitting on the floor, looking as about hurt as ever and not just physically injured. I see the pain in her face and I sense the anger. I can see what Mason has done is effecting her in so many ways. I offer her a sly smile. "Start off great and end with a thud. That's how my fights usually went at first, too." I tell her as I stop and lean on the half portion of wall and door. I look at her while I fold my arms up against my chest and give her a look of joy, yet disappointment. "Tisk, tisk... you started off so well... You were on top of things. Then... Mason had to get a little bit rough. Typical guy." I roll my eyes and bounce myself against the wall and walk in fully to meet with the girl who lays against the wall. "Anger doesn't suit you, sweetie. Actually, it doesn't suit anyone, especially us girls." I get up beside her, and let my legs bend as I come to sit near her, and I draw my arms around my legs to keep them together. I look over at her. "Matthew going to get you a nurse or something? Does he know how you have to be treated by them?" I ask her honestly, while nodding my head to my own statement. "You did good out there, G. Real good. You are strong and feirce. Mason knows that. Yeah.. he may have won, but did you see the reaction you got out there from the crowd? I was part of that. Wasn't fair for him to pick on a girl like that in battle, but the simple fact that you went out there is what had the audience react that way. "You have earned their respect, I'm sure. YOu got out there where the battle is outnumbered by age and training and yet you got this close," I bring my index and thumb together with just a very small crack of an opening for Gala to see and compare, "to bringing him down. He got lucky that is all." I stare at her features and then I think about her ribs that got punched twice. With a concerned voice, I lay it on her. "You know you need to get checked out, doctor or not. Though, I think they also are forced to comply, to the person in question, to the rules that they can refuse treatment, if you so wish. I don't recommend it though."

Normally, I'd be kind of mad with myself about my bodily reaction to a potential fight, but this fight I participated in was no ordinary fight. I had to hurt a little girl. Why did the matchmaker pair me up with her. What the hell? Its like, whoever did that knew I'd have trouble attacking the girl. I can't deal with the fact that the girl is in so much pain because of me. I hate myself right now. I'm a monster. That fight should never have happened. I slam my fist into a near by wall in complete anger. My knuckles crack, but I don't give a damn right now. I hear a nearby voice which interests me. "You're a fucking asshole. You know you might have broken her ribs." As if I didn't know that already. "Don't think I've dismissed that fact. I know exactly what I did to that little girl. Do you think I'm happy I won the fight huh? No, I am not. That fight wasn't fair in the slightest. I'm a fucking monster for what I did." I could no longer stay seated. My hands were trembling so bad that I repeatedly punch the wall in front of me. Blow after blow, my hands strike the wall. Blood oozes out of the cuts that appear on my hands. "Think I feel honor winning that fight huh? No I don't. I'm not at all proud for fighting back." I walk a little ways before another healer tries to approach me. I snap and before I know it, my hands launch at her jaw. "These wounds I suffered in a horrible fight. I refuse treatment."

What I find in front of me is not what I expected at all. There's a guy who is beaming with anger and resentment. Not against the girl, he just fought but against himself. The way he's glaring at me does make me take a step back, especially when I see the way he hauls off.
I'm ready for whatever he will do to me.
'Fight me instead of her, you coward' I think.
Instead he takes it out on the wall opposite of me. Strange! I don't think I've ever done that after WINNING a fight. So I give him a bewildered look and cross my arms in front of my chest while he claims to be a monster and his regrets.
I grimace at his words. "That little girl almost had you anyway." I suggest knowing all too well that it won't make him feel any better.

His knuckles are bleeding now but I'm pretty sure that Gala also inflicted some pain so when the nurse approaches this guy...Mason...I step back just to hear him refuse any treatment.
What happens next isn't predictable nor is it clever. He punches the nurse.
"Oh shit." I exclaim my eyes wide. He's a loose canon.
Instinctively I go in between them, grab Mason by his shirt and push him back against the blood sprinkled wall he'd just been punching.
"What the hell are you doing?" Before he can get another one in on me or the nurse I pin him down with my left forearm and hammer my other fist straight onto his nose.
With my firm rgip still on him I look over my shoulder and shout. "The girl needs a nurse...down the hallway. She'll be more appreciative."

The staff discuss about 'security' for a second and then leave.
My time to stare him down or strike again. I choose the former since he seems already really screwed up.


My voice is a little softer now that I understand how he feels about the whole thing.

"Start off great and end with a thud. That's how my fights usually went at first, too." Kyanite's voice fills the quiet area. Whether Gala was expecting or surprised to see the older career she was unsure of. In a way she was hoping that she'd decide to go assist Matthew, or have no desire to see Gala. But sure enough comforting words will the silence. How odd it was that some female's were naturally nurturing, while others are as hard as a rock.

"Really?" Gala questions as her blue eyes spring over to where the noise came from; exactly where Matthew left from. Of course there was no way Gala believed Kyanite was similar to her when first beginning to fight; it was probably just a way to make her feel better. And even if she predicts a lie, it still works.

The brunette travels across the room and Gala's eyes follow every step. She's disappointed in the fact that the young girl was doing so well at first, and then Mason fought a bit to rough...she even adds that it's a typical guy move. How ironic, that sounds exactly like Matthew talking about his dislike for females.

"Mason..." Gala comments, she wasn't even sure of what his name was until now. Knowing who she was fighting against was held as a surprise after discovering they didn't separate it by ages. Scaring herself before the fight wasn't going to help. "Yeah typical guy."

"Anger doesn't suit you, sweetie. Actually, it doesn't suit anyone, especially us girls." She advices, and it even brings a slight smile to the young defeated face. Of course she was angry, she was furious.

"Well good thing i'm furious." Gala comments, her voice is hushed and doesn't really match her words. "I could of taken him." She repeats, because Kyanite needed to hear that to. The tiny smile fades into a nonexistent one.

The disappointment that was radiating from Gala must be strong enough to reach Kyanite, because she takes a seat next to her. There's no more advice, or what she could of done differently, only that she impressed the crowd. The audience's reaction was hardly considered, it was all about the pain and whether she lost or won. Still the audience wasn't completely ignored. She could hear all of there cheers when Gala rammed a hard kick into Mason's shin, or the gasps from when she received one just as harsh to her ribs.

"You have earned their respect, I'm sure. YOu got out there where the battle is outnumbered by age and training and yet you got this close," Kyanite pulls two of her fingers together with only a tiny space in between, to illustrate what she was talking about... "to bringing him down. He got lucky that is all."

A smile returns to Gala's face hearing these much needed words. "He did." Gala agrees with a small giggle that only brings another shooting pain back to her ribs. "But why does the audience matter at all? That won't help if I'm ever in the games..." So the fears really come out, probably because something about Kyanite was very trusting.

"You know you need to get checked out, doctor or not. Though, I think they also are forced to comply, to the person in question, to the rules that they can refuse treatment, if you so wish. I don't recommend it though." Kyanite's voice drastically changes, though it's been sweet the entire time. Perfect Gala has a way to get out of treatment now. But there was the fact that she should follow Kyanite's advice; all in all Gala needed to get checked on eventually.

A sigh replies to Kyanite's words. What was Gala's best option? A door opens and time's up for figuring out what to do. "Why can't we go to your friend?" Gala remembers joining Kyanite to some doctor dude; he was nice enough that the youngster even trusted to get her hand checked on. Plus this would buy her more time, and away from these freaky nurses. "Please? He's a doctor, right?"

I nodd to her as I make myself known to her and wait for a few moments. I stare at her sitting on the ground and the longer I stand there, I begin to tell something from my past. My lips part and no sound comes out at first, then my voice cracks and the words come out to my newfound 'friend'. "Ends with a thud, would be right, more or less. Actually, I hit the mat a lot when I started training. Hand to hand combat.. is my worst area of fighting. You've done so much better than me." I smirk a bit, then continue. "My first real battle, I don't know if you would call it winning or not. The coaches called it in my favor because I jammed the wooden sword straight into the back of my opponent and caused him immense pain. I barely made any marks on him until the very last moment. That very last swing. I was fighing against this kid... this guy my age, when I was twelve. He was a long time old 'friend' of mine. Anyways, the battle was all in his favor. I kept landing on the mat. My head connected to the cushioned floor at least five times. Never could get my footing. Never could stay up long enough to really do anything toward him. He might have been my age, but he was built and stronger than I was at that age. I was so tiny. He even crushed my left hand in the battle with a cheap shot from the hilt of the sword. I only got one good hit against him, but a lot of good it did me. Caused me more pain to end that battle that way, but my father is the one who made me do it." I tell her a bit about my first fight and the only detail I spare her was the name of the guy I had to battle. She doesn't need to know about Jins. He's part of my dark history that only Matthew knows about and surprisingly, I've seen nothing of Jins in quite some time. It almost puts this dark, looming cloud over my head expecting him to just appear out of nowhere soon. I shake that thought away. I can't help but wonder what is going through her head. So, I go and sit by her and smile when she claims she furious. I would be too after that kind of odds against me. "I was furious about that battle, too. Hurt, too." I tell her. I pause to listen to her talk about the audience as I had commented on just moments ago. "You've seen the games, I know. The little gifts inside of the parachutes that are sent to the tributes in the games. They are sponsor gifts. You earn them because of the crowd. The audience, if you must say it that way. They support their favorite tributes. They go for the ones that makes impressions on their hearts and minds. It could mean life and death. If you do nothing but grunt and groan and scowl, they won't take interest in you. If you put up a real fight like you did with Mason, they honor that a lot more. If you show you're true worth..." I raise an eyebrow to her, "they will notice you. Win or lose, you made an impression today. That's the best thing you can do." My next manuever was to try to get Gala to see a nurse about her condition. It wasn't smart to just let her wounds get worse if she needed to seek medical care. So, when she mentioned seeing the doctor that I had went to after Matt had taken me to that one cold night. I even took her there to see him, along with myself, after the fight with Joel and the gang. "I think that might be alright, but I don't know if you're up for traveling, Gala. It's quite a ways from here. Maybe, we can catch Matthew before he grabs a nurse." I move to get up, and I reach out a hand for her to take. I'm just hoping that getting her up from that sitting position isn't going to do her more harm. "Lets go get Matthew?"

If they don't like it, well its just too damn bad. This guy has me pinned to the wall, well time to show him a piece of my mind. "Leave me alone. You hate me for fighting that girl? Well too fucking bad buddy. I wont throw a fight. If that had been the arena, do you expect me to lay down my life?"

Under my grip the guy seems to be calming down. He's stopped struggling against me and took my single punch like a man.
Since the nurses left I feel it's safe to slowly let him go.
I do understand a little how he feels. He just went up against a 14 year old, who almost showed him up if it hadn't been for him breaking her rib and who knows what else.
I don't get why he feels so much remorse. It's the game and the only reason I'm mad is because Gala is my trainee.
"Leave me alone. You hate me for fighting that girl? Well too fucking bad buddy. I wont throw a fight. If that had been the arena, do you expect me to lay down my life?" he whines
"I don't hate you. the crowd does. I just want to protect Gala. I wouldn't throw a fight either."
With that I let him go. It seems like he's actually hurting more than Gla, at least that's my first impression.

I shove him hard against the wall "Don't come near her outside the arena." and then walk towards the exit just to spot two familiar figures. Gala and Kyanite. The taller one supporting my trainee.

Instantly I block their view of Mason and ask. "What are you two doing here? I sent the nurse down the hall to find you."

Briefly I scan their faces. They are on a mission I can tell.
So I reach under Gala's other arm and tell her. "You should be laying down until a doctor checked you over. If you broke your rib badly it might pierce one of your organs."
