Others of his kind wandered the dark and dreary streets, slipping money through letterboxes, through cracks in windows, any way they could. The stupid peacekeepers had not yet realized the district seven city hall had been compromised, as his younger of comrades slid inside unannounced and undetected, to steal enough cash to give nearly everyone in the district something. He moved, his gaze flickering upon the last house on his list- a man his father used to work with. He recalled stories of the man his father partnered with, and felt a slight pang of guilt in his chest. He had only been two when the woman he married passed away. His lanky form traveled to the door with ease, and his joints creaked as he knelt to where a letterbox should have been. Only solid oak greeted his fingertips. Quietly, he swore, and lifted his hand to gently twist the door handle. It stuck for a moment, and he twisted harder and harder until he realized there would be no entering through the front door. With the grace of a cat, he scampered around to the side of the house, his fingers searching for an opened window- though there were none. Biting his lip, he withdrew a sharp looking knife, and began to pry at the glass, making quiet clicking noises as the steel of his blade collided with the metal of the window. A slightly louder rattling echoed around him as he cursed and eventually managed to slip the window open wide enough for his body to slip inside. His fingers dragged his body through the window, his heavy boots clop-clopping upon the floor of the old house. This darkened room, graced now by the light of the moon looked like a bedroom. He moved, through the abandoned possessions, his fingers twisting the knob of the door that led deeper into the home. It twisted with ease, though it creaked open, and Henry's teeth ground loudly as the door groaned open. Fuck, if anything would wake up the occupants of the house, it would have been that. He pushed his way through the darkness, fumbling his way through the darkened halls until he came to what seemed like a kitchen. Withdrawing the paper from his pockets, he counted out enough, and left it upon the hard surface. ay something, I'm giving up on you. I'll be the one if you want me to. Anywhere, I would've followed you. Say something, I'm giving up on you. Say something...

Click. Click. Click. The sound echos about my empty head. I shift my position, my small frame bouncing haphazardly on the stiff mattress. I should have been dreaming. Whisked away in a fanciful world where everything is okay. My father's ailing health and our own poverty didn't exist. And I was happy.

But I couldn't bring myself away from this world. I can't sleep when my father lies in bead every night, his back causing him so much pain. I hear his cries, soft, in the night. He doesn't want me to hear. My brothers aren't helping much anymore. They visit once every few weeks. Bringing what little money they can. They have their own families. I couldn't ask for much more.

Worries weighed on my mind endlessly. Should I get a job? What about school? You can't drop out. One after school? That wouldn't pay nearly enough. How long has it been? I couldn't tell. The time seemed to drag on and pass quickly all at the same time.

Creak. Father. I hear him groan. Heavy footsteps pound across the wooden floor. Stomp, Stomp, Stomp. It beats unevenly as he makes his way to the closet. More groans. He's in pain. I can't help him. stomp, stomp stomp he tries to quiet his footsteps as he opens the door to my room.

I shut my eyes, pretending to have been asleep. I don't want him to know I worry. It would kill him. I try to look peaceful and happy, like I truly was in a dream world. I hear a satisfied laugh and his awkward footsteps shuffle away.
I love you papa... I'm sorry

Pat. Pat. Pat. I lift myself off the mattress, slowly stretching stiff limbs. I lock the window, the doors. I don't like being alone.

I crawl back into bed. I shut the door. Creak. It's rusty. Old. I pull the thin sheet over my body. Fwoosh. And to my surprise fall into a restless sleep.

EEERRRR I jumped forward. My heart stuttered, beating loudly and softly. BUM bum BUM bum. Someone... someone was there. I knew it. Getting to my feet, I walked as quiet as I could, my feet sticking to the hard floor.

I open the door. I'm scared. I don't know what to do. So I call out,

"Who's there?"

The heavy twill fabric of his heavy overcoat echoed loudly as he turned, his dark eyes searching through the darkness for the feminine voice. "A friend..." he said quietly, pushing the money further along the countertop. His eyes closed as he attempted to recall the female. He met her once, maybe twice. He was sure they knew each other from school at the very least. She was small- tiny, compared to him at 6'2, and he was more than confident in his own fists to keep her a safe distance away if she threatened him with a knife or heaven forbid, an axe. "Just go back to bed. I'm not here to hurt you." he insisted, backing further through the small kitchen, a hand stretched behind him to help keep his balance in case of a collision with a door or wall. He exhaled deeply as he hit a door jam, his fingers rising along the surface, until -click- a blinding light shone high above. His eyes clamped shut, face cringing in temporary blindness. One opened slowly, the male watching the girl with a bit of curiosity. Her name was right on the tip of his tongue, threatening to spill out of his mouth in mock surprise. A light dusting of winter's snow rested in his dark locks, on his shoulders, collecting in his ebony scarf. A clock read it was nearly three in the morning- too early in his opinion. He honestly had no idea what to expect from her. Would she charge? Scream for help? Draw a knife and launch it at him? He could empathize. He would feel uneasy had some random male burst into his home in the dead of night. Say something, I'm giving up on you. I'll be the one if you want me to. Anywhere, I would've followed you. Strangely though, it was not at this odd lanky boy breaking into my house. Oh no. I had another problem all together. I grabbed what he had left on the counter, shoving it back at him. "I don't need your pity."There was shame in my voice. I didn't want to be felt sorry for. Given money because of my father's health. In the end of the day, it would never be enough to let him retire. He'd work himself to the bone every day. Even with a little money in our pockets. He'd still cry softly every night, trying to keep his voice down. I took a closer look at the boy. He couldn't be that much older than me. Two, three years tops, though it was hard to tell with our drastic height differences. What was he? Rich? I've come to doubt that anyone in district seven is. How'd he even get this money. Why would he give it to me? I'll have to admit, this boy, albeit vaguely familiar, was indeed mysterious. What he had done, who he was pulled at my mind, begging to be answered. He must have been good. She had locked the doors and the windows. For fear of someone taking what little they had. Why would someone break into your house to give you something. As thoughts raced through my mind, I felt my anger diminishing. Though still furious at the boy for wounding my pride, amusement at the whole situation overcame me. "You seem to have this whole thing a little backwards."I sound bitter. I am. He breaks into my house, leaves me some money and then expects me to be grateful? To thank him on bend and knee? Sorry, but no. This whole thing was happening too fast for me to even register what was going on. I was in my pajamas for fucks sake. If this was some sort of weird robbery ploy I'd be dead within the minute. What was near me? A fork! I grabbed it, dropping the papers at his feet and facing him. "Try anything and I'll.... uh... fork you!"

"It's not about that at all. We gave everyone in the district something to help. Don't you think the Peacekeepers take too much in taxes?" he explained, hands still low in front of him, showing her he was completely unarmed. Though he was a little taken aback at the threat. "I'm absolutely terrified of your rusty fork. What, are you gonna give me tetanus?" A low laugh escaped the male. "Look, just take it alright? The least you could do is buy some painkillers for your father." The entire situation seemed like something he could take back to his family and laugh about- a sixteen year old threatening to attack him with a fork, threatening not to stab, but to fork. "Besides-" he added. "I can have you on the floor in three seconds flat." His cool voice echoed quietly around the quiet kitchen, and a smirk rested upon his lips. "I'm not accepting it back." He wondered if she were the only person in the district who refused, or if any of his family lay indisposed by the Peacekeepers. The longer he stayed, the more trouble he felt the others could get into. Say something, I'm giving up on you. I'll be the one if you want me to. Anywhere, I would've followed you. I look at the fork.Giving a small laugh."It's not that rusty. I mean. Who are you to threaten me? You're the one in my house!"I bend down, taking the money off the floor. "Thanks, I guess. And yea, the peacekeepers are bullshit."It was true. Almost everything father made, went to taxes. Did the Capitol need more money? Fuck no. Did they take more? Of course. Who else was going to pay for the fancy colors laced within their hair. The overly tight clothes and rich foods. Us. The ones starving to death and working to the bone.

I close my eyes for a while, emotion overwhelming me. I have to control this. I need to get hold of myself. This anger... this overwhelming rage at my own situation will only get me killed.

"But we can't do anything without being killed"I look at the crumpled bills in my hand. "Or at least... I can't."I place a hand on my hip. I'm not sure if I appreciate the boy's smug confidence, or detest it. While I'm sure I could hold my own against the boy, even with our height differences. Okay, maybe not. This boy obviously held more skills than breaking into a locked house. And supposedly used them to be some kind of... District Hero. Stealing from the capitol and helping the poor?

How could he do this alone? Why would he. This couldn't benefit him, giving away all the money he could keep for himself. Maybe that was the point. Selfless heroism. For what? There's a reason for everything. Even selflessness.

He laughed, the melodic sound echoing through the kitchen space. His stance dropped, hands falling to swing gently by his sides as he approached her, like he had so many others before.

"There is a way around it." he purred, fingers trailing along the top of the hard counter tops. "You could join my family. We stand for the betterment of all in the district. Even the Peacekeepers. They need to earn their paycheck with us around." A sly smile escaped his lips as he circled the woman, his hands lowering to her fingers, gently prying away the makeshift weapon.

She was small and short- about the size of one of his twelve-year-old comrades. She could probably sneak into important conversations and eavesdrop without a second thought- no one would even think about her presence. "You snuck up on me." His form slipped away, performing a complete circle around her, eyeing her up and down.

"Would you like to join us then? All of us?" His lips drew upwards in a wide grin, paw offered to her. "You would only have to work by night- none would know your name. Unless of course, you wish to share it with them. Are you good at delivering messages?" One moment he was breaking into her home to deposit a package, the next, here he was offering her a position in the 'Family.' Honestly, he hoped she agreed. He really needed a messenger.

I had to admit that the offer tugged at my mind. This boy was charming. Very charming. How do I know that this was a legitimate offer. I didn't think I'd done anything to impress this boy. But a family? I didn't have much of that. I loved my father, but when he was home he laid in bed in pain. I took care of him, cooked for him, I did everything. I didn't carry any spite for him, I never would. He'd taken care of me for so long, I could only offer the same care for him. It would be nice to have a family that had my back as much as I did. As impulsive as I am, my mouth acted before I even thought it over much.

"Why not?"
I put my small hand in his, looking up at him. I got a sort of thrill, at the idea of rebelling against the government.  I could get more money for my father, and for the other people I see struggling here in this poor district. Was it against the law? A better question is what isn't. Things won't change. So what do we have to do? Go around them. Much better than starting my own underground operation than join this boys? He had skill and charm, maybe I could be of some use.

He chuckled, his hand clutching gently around her paw, his grin deepening. "Great. My family- our family. We don't use our real names in case we get caught. Instead, we use old myths." He pulled her along to the wall, gently hitting the light switch to plunge them into utter darkness. Still, he could see, if only the silhouettes caused by the light emanating from the outside world.

He pulled her along through the darkened house, his spare hand reaching out for obstacles, brushing ever so carefully against wobbly wooden tables and scratchy chairs until they reached the front door that he promptly unlocked, and exited. He could see other dark forms in the distance, and allowed his gaze to wander skyward to the full moon, where the stars circled it, almost laughing at the Capitol.

Once out in the open, the male glanced over his shoulder, carefully tugging her along. "My name is Hades. I think... You seem like an Iris. She was a messenger between the great gods. Maybe you could do the same?" He led the way through the district, constantly on the lookout for the whitecoats, the peacekeepers. "She was also the Goddess of Rainbows. Do you think you could handle the responsibility of being the one others look to for comfort? It's a big job."
